Transmedia Storytelling Strategy How and why producers use transmedia storytelling for competitive advantage. Cameron Cliff Bachelor of Film and Screen Media, Bachelor of Creative Industries (Honours) Principal Supervisor: Dr Jon Silver Associate Supervisor: Distinguished Professor Stuart Cunningham Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of a Doctor of Philosophy School of Media, Entertainment and Creative Arts Faculty of Creative Industries Queensland University of Technology 2017 1 Keywords Transmedia, storytelling, strategy, competitive advantage, multiplatform, Hollywood, Lizzie Bennet Diaries, Pride and Prejudice, Sofia’s Diary, Doctor Who, BBC ii Abstract Storytelling in contemporary media production exists in a landscape of rapid and continuous change. Practitioners and scholars alike have been exploring different methods for success within this landscape, fixating on multiplatform strategies that blend together novel and traditional methods of telling their stories. As a result, transmedia storytelling, the strategy of creating an immersive world through the coordination of multiple, unique narratives, has enjoyed a place of prominence within media production research for the better part of the last decade. However, the concept of transmedia storytelling has become clouded by ‘semantic chaos’ (Scolari 2009). Investigations from different disciplines and industries have formed separate silos of research that have divided transmedia and left professionals questioning the relevance of transmedia storytelling to their practice. Using strategic management theory to coordinate research from across different disciplinary silos (media and cultural studies, marketing and advertising), this thesis conducts an original, interdisciplinary study of transmedia storytelling. It develops an audience engagement framework specific to transmedia projects and a lens for assessing the competitive advantage of different transmedia strategies.

As such, fans are often presented as a unified, communal group interacting within the context of fan communities that are considered alternative social communities with ‘no established hierarchy’ (Bacon-Smith, 1992, p. 41). However, Milly Williamson argued that fans do not all operate from a position of cultural marginality. Frank Collins explains why he thinks the time is ripe for analysis of the revival of Doctor Who and how his new book The Pandorica Opens goes about examining Matt Smith’s first series… Doctor Who What are your credentials? I suppose you could describe me as a life-long fan of the series. It was certainly a programme right at the heart of my own childhood and amazingly it does seem to have entranced several new generations since the revival in 2005. I was absolutely potty about the series, collected all the Target novelisations, jigsaws, comics... the lot. The series seems to have this very powerful way of inspiring its fans to be creative and you only have to look at the people who make the series now to see how far that passion can take you. However, I didn't really step into fandom proper - and by that I mean actually wanting to write about the series and actively responding to other fan discussions - until the first series of the Russell T. Davies era had been shown. I had certainly “I was absolutely potty about the had a go at getting fanzines off the series, collected all the Target novel- ground in the past and was a regular isations, jigsaws, comics… the lot” convention goer (I still bear the scars of Longleat 1983) but, when the new series started, fandom also meant access to online communities and I grabbed the chance to talk and write about the series to a captive audience. From there I did regular reviews of both the original series and new episodes on Outpost Gallifrey and then Gallifrey Base.

  • The Web of Fear
THE WEB OF FEAR Doctor Who fandom online: one man’s experience Dale Smith To the best of my knowledge, as I sit here and write this in March 2009, I am celebrating my first decade of internet use. Some time in 1999 – and Google cannot help me here – I joined the group alt.drwho.creative. From there, I graduated to rec.arts.drwho, and spent an inordinate amount of time arguing the merits of various BBC Books featuring The Doctor. I know that this makes me a dinosaur. I still own underwear that’s been around longer than I’ve been online, but in internet terms I’m a Cro-Magnon wondering where all the mammoths went. There will be people reading this who’ve never had to use a dial-up account to try to convince someone on the other side of the world that they’re wrong about canon. People who find the whole idea of newsgroups as quaint and olde worlde as I find the idea of using the phone book as anything other than a doorstop. To try and give those people an idea of what it was like back then, I’ve drunk a bottle of wine and am going to type until I fall asleep. With CAPS LOCK on RANDOM and teh spell-CHECK disabeld. But what’s important to remember is that I’m not the start of it: even before I got involved, there was an online Doctor Who fandom – right from the internet’s earliest days, even. There is a prehistory to fandom that predates my arrival in it, my birth even – which is a common element that unites the majority of fans today: no matter how long you’ve been a fan, there’s stuff that went on before, a time when they did things differently.
