FX: NEW ANGLE, LONG SHOT, the WALKWAY curves round, Narrator & Time Lords now following the curve, heading towards TWO HUGE, CARVED DOORS, already open. A Black Void beyond. Tale CUT TO: 4 INT. BLACK VOID 4 FX: OTHER SIDE OF THE HUGE DOORS, NARRATOR & 2 TIME LORDS striding through. The Time Lords stay by the doors, on guard; lose them, and the doors, as the Narrator walks on. FX: WIDE SHOT of the Black Void - like Superman's Krypton, the courtroom/Phantom Zone scenes - deep black, starkly lit from above. Centre of the Void: a long table, with 5 TIME LORDS in robes Writer's(no collars) seated. -

It is both loved and resented, sometimes simultaneously. High Renaissance style defined a norm for centuries afterwards, sometimes deemed Classical, sometimes termed more generically Old Master art. When the Modernists swept aside tradition and tried to start again from scratch, the Renaissance art enshrined in palatial museums soon began to seem rather dusty by comparison with newer and sleeker models. In an age of photog- raphy, repeated reproduction made it all too familiar. Additionally, the gross simplification of its theoretical aims to mimesis, or the imitation of nature, made it sound obsolete. So if the art of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries wasn’t ignored by twentieth-century sophisticates, it was parodied – except in the hands of art historians, whose discipline was burgeoning during the middle years of the century, and in the hands of collectors who could still buy important Renaissance paintings. This adventure is not flawless but provides Doctor Who and the Sea-Devils entertainment and iconic scenes throughout. All episodes of this adventure are terrific fun, exciting, interesting, well written and acted with only very minor faults. The interest and quality levels never drop below 9. Pertwee himself is in majestic form demonstrating brilliant humour, dynamic action, warmth and intelligence. There is a tremendously fun sword fight between him and The Doctor as well as all the wonderful verbal jousting. -

Sociopathetic abscess or yawning chasm? The absent postcolonial transition in Doctor Who Lindy A Orthia The Australian National University, Canberra, Australia Abstract This paper explores discourses of colonialism, cosmopolitanism and postcolonialism in the long-running television series, Doctor Who. Doctor Who has frequently explored past colonial scenarios and has depicted cosmopolitan futures as multiracial and queer- positive, constructing a teleological model of human history. Yet postcolonial transition stages between the overthrow of colonialism and the instatement of cosmopolitan polities have received little attention within the program. This apparent ‘yawning chasm’ — this inability to acknowledge the material realities of an inequitable postcolonial world shaped by exploitative trade practices, diasporic trauma and racist discrimination — is whitewashed by the representation of past, present and future humanity as unchangingly diverse; literally fixed in happy demographic variety. Harmonious cosmopolitanism is thus presented as a non-negotiable fact of human inevitability, casting instances of racist oppression as unnatural blips. Under this construction, the postcolonial transition needs no explication, because to throw off colonialism’s chains is merely to revert to a more natural state of humanness, that is, cosmopolitanism. Only a few Doctor Who stories break with this model to deal with the ‘sociopathetic abscess’ that is real life postcolonial modernity. Is China Colonizing North Korea? Unraveling Geopolitical Economy in the Production of Territory Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Seung-Ook Lee, M.A. Department of Geography The Ohio State University 2013 Dissertation Committee: Joel Wainwright, Advisor Mathew Coleman Bruce Cumings Ed Malecki Becky Mansfield Copyright by Seung-Ook Lee 2013 Abstract This dissertation examines the complex articulations between geopolitical and geoeconomic imperatives across national borders in the production of state territory. More specifically, it investigates the development of territorial linkages between North Korea and northeast China, scrutinizing the political-economic conditions that underlie these bilateral relations. My central thesis is that the recent changes in political-economic relations between these two countries have resulted not from a unilateral economic movement on the part of China – a ‘colonization’ – but instead through the mutual articulation of two processes: on one hand, North Korea’s deployment of territorial strategies to leverage its regional capacities and, on the other, China’s geo-economic approach to enhancing security in the border region. I contend that the discourse of China’s colonization of North Korea that has been constructed and disseminated by South Koreans reveals that both liberals and conservatives in South Korea desire North Korea as a sort of colony, albeit in different forms. This argument unfolds in three parts. First, in Chapter 2, I begin with a theoretical elaboration of geopolitical economy in the production of territory. Here I examine two different dialectical interactions which are deeply entangled with the production of state territory—the dialectics between geopolitical and geoeconomic logics of power and between territorial practices and representations of territory.
