Newsletter January 2021 2020 Colt Group Highlights King’S Legacy JAMES HARRON Newsletter January 2021 2020 Colt Group Highlights King’s Legacy King’s Legacy’s juvenile Group 1 double was the undoubted highlight for JHB on the racetrack in 2020. The son of multiple Champion sire Redoute’s Choice, from the outstanding family of Not A Single Doubt (also by Redoute’s Choice) and Snippets, took out out both the Group 1 ATC Inglis Sires’ Produce Stakes and the Group 1 ATC Champagne Stakes in April. Purchased as a yearling for $1,400,000 from Segenhoe Stud, King’s Legacy flourished late in his 2YO season to become the first ever offspring of Redoute’s Choice to win two Group 1 races as a 2YO, and in doing so marked himself down as a stallion prospect of the very highest order. This naturally did not go unnoticed by the studmasters of Australia, and his place at stud was secured by Coolmore Australia in between his two Group 1 victories. King’s Legacy is now back in work and will likely have the Group 1 Randwick Guineas as his main Autumn target. 2020 Colt Group Highlights Capitalist’s First Runners We have been eagerly awaiting the first runners for Capitalist, standing at Newgate Farm, the very first stallion produced for the JHB Colt Group, and he certainly hasn’t disappointed in getting off to a tremendous start with his progeny. He already heads the first-season sire earnings table with a sizable lead, and with four stakes horses already produced. This compares incredibly with the likes of current leading stallions I Am Invincible (3), Fastnet Rock (1) and Not a Single Doubt (5) at the same stage of their careers. Tremendous support from breeders means that Capitalist is in a great position to continue this in the coming seasons, covering in excess of 200 mares in each of his seasons at stud, such is his popularity. Having supported him heavily both in the breeding barn and the sales rings, we are very excited to have one of Capitalist’s most promising young sons running for the JHB Colt Group. Forbes (below, far side) was very impressive in the Listed Merson Cooper Stakes on debut for trainers Anthony and Sam Freedman, showing a dazzling turn of foot before just being pipped on the line. Forbes is now back in work and being aimed towards emulating his sire in winning the Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes at Rosehill in March. Leviathan (Zoustar) winning at Randwick prior to his sale to Hong Kong 2020 Colt Group Highlights Hong Kong Success Also a major part of the strategy behind our Colt Partnership is the on-sale of horses, with Hong Kong a particular focus, and it has been fantastic to watch the ongoing success of our graduates there. One of the first was Group 2 Todman Stakes winner Gunnison, who was sold to Hong Kong for $1.400,000. He has been a great servant for his new owners, returning almost HK$8,000,000 in earnings and still going strong as a 6YO. Also this year we have seen our Group 3 winner Stronger fly the flag in Hong Kong. He was sold to George Moore and has hit the ground running in Hong Kong, breaking the 1000m track record at Happy Valley in February, and recently seen contesting Hong Kong’s premier Group 1 Sprint on International day. Leviathan was also sold to Hong Kong through Tom Inglis and is another to make a very impressive start to his career. With a name change to Healthy Happy he is the winner of two of his three starts including in a Class 2 on 20th December and looks another on his way to the top level. 2020 Highlights Filly Success Our filly partnership was headlined by the three-time winning Nicconi filly Celestine (pictured above). Trained by Tony and Calvin McEvoy, Celestine quickly brought up a hat-trick of victories, including up the Flemington straight, and continued her consistency when rounding out a great first preparation with a Another fantastic result with our filly purchases on fast-closing third in the Group 3 Red Roses Stakes over the track in 2020 was the stakes victory for blue- the Flemington carnival. A filly with an outstanding blooded filly Sangria (pictured below) in the Listed physique, and improving with every start, Celestine is a Moomba Plate at Flemington in April. The daughter filly to watch in 2021. of I Am Invincible is from the outstanding family of multiple Champion sire Redoute’s Choice,. Sangria has now retired to John and Deb Camilleri’s Fairway Thoroughbreds broodmare band at Segenhoe Stud, and looks an outstanding prospect in that sphere. 2020 Highlights Pariah First Yearlings The 2021 yearling sales will also see the first horses on offer by another stallion from the JHB Colt Group, dual Group 3 winner and Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes runner-up Pariah, standing at Arrowfield Stud. During our pre-sale inspections we have seen a lot of his stock and they are very much stamped in his exceptional mould. They have great athleticism and look very much like the precocious early runners we expect to see from what is Australia’s most productive sire line. It is no surprise to note that he covered more mares this year than any other, as breeders become increasingly aware of the quality he is putting into his stock. 2020 Highlights Breeding Stock The arrival of the year’s new crop of foals from August onwards is always a very exciting time, and 2020 has been no different in that regard. For our Elite Broodmare Partnership we welcome a pair of outstanding I Am Invincible foals, a filly for our Keeneland USA purchase Celestial Insight (mare by Scat Daddy) and a colt for Suspicieuse, the dam of Group 3 Breeders’ Plate winner Dubious. 2020 colt by I Am Invincible x Suspicieuse (FR) Our Elite Broodmare Partnership was also again active in the USA market, purchasing the stakes winning Fashion Faux Pas (pictured, by Flatter) for US$310,000 in November. She has been purchased to support our exciting young stallion prospect King’s Legacy upon his retirement to Coolmore Stud. 2020 Highlights Portfolio Management A big part of our year goes into the planning of matings for our portfolio management clients. With diligent stock inspections and pedigree research undertaken, it has been very rewarding to see the fruits of this labour come together in a fantastic crop of foals born this season, with some highlights pictured here. 2020 colt by Dundeel x JHB broodmare purchase Caesar’s Princess for Fergus Doyle 2020 filly by I Am Invincible x G2 winner and 2020 colt by Deep Field x Excess Love for Rob JHB yearling purchase Satin Shoes for Belinda Love Bateman 2020 filly by I Am Invincible x JHB broodmare 2020 colt by The Autumn Sun x JHB weanling purchase Flamboyant Lass for Rob Love, David purchase Artemis Rose for Belinda Bateman Henderson and Gary Diamond Looking Forward Magic Millions 2021 Gold Coast Yearling Sale During a year like no other we have all been forced to adapt quickly to changing circumstances, and 2020 has kept us on our toes right to the very end! With the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale almost upon us, we have taken chance out of the equation and got on the road in a big way, visiting 45 NSW farms and inspecting over 700 yearlings through the past fortnight from Edinburgh Park in Taree, to Corumbene Stud in Dunedoo, Twin Hills Stud in Cootamundra and all in between, with each stop marked on the map below. Big thanks to the vendors for accommodating us, and through adapting quickly, we are now more prepared for this exciting sale than we ever have been, and are looking forward to completing our period out of greater Sydney and getting to the sales at the Gold Coast, which run from 12th January to 18th January 2021. Wishing you a safe and prosperous New Year JAMES HARRON www.jamesharronbloodstock.com [email protected].

  • History of Thoroughbred Breeding in the Upper Hunter Valley
Thoroughbred Breeding History in the Upper Hunter Valley Executive Summary The history of thoroughbred breeding in the Upper Hunter Valley dates back to the very early days of settlement with the importation of the TB Stallion ‘Crawford’ to Potter Macqueen’s Segenhoe Stud in 1826. Since then there has been an expanding continuum. In the early 21st century the valley is acknowledged as one of the premier TB breeding areas of the world comparing favourably with both Newmarket UK and Kentucky USA. There have been a number of iterations when one area of the valley or another has reigned supreme. Broadly speaking the region has been divided into at least three geographical clusters: Denman and environs including Widden, Bylong and Baerami Valleys plus Jerrys Plains, Muswellbrook and district, Scone and region with Merriwa and also latterly the Murrurundi/Timor precinct. It might be reasonable to argue that the TB enterprises were gradually squeezed northwards by the encroaching coal mining industry from earlier establishments in the lower Hunter Valley; especially around Maitland. Remarkably the ‘mud map’ of thoroughbred studs in 1900 very closely resembles that for 2016 with ownership the only issue. There is one notable exception: Widden Stud. The Hon James White was the pioneer leviathan owner-breeder in the early days of metropolitan racing in both Sydney and Melbourne. His trail blazing forays included Epsom Derby assault on the august Jockey Club establishment in England. During the latter part of the 19th century the Thompson family of the Widden & Bylong Valleys were preeminent. Brothers W & F. A. Moses sustained a brief but exceptionally productive period at ‘Arrowfield’ (now ‘Coolmore’) near Jerrys Plains early in the 20th century.

  • PACO BOY’S Availability in 2011, We Jumped at the Chance
2011 WAIKATO STUD PACO BOY HONG KONG CHAMPION SHAMROCKER ROCKIN’ THE RECORDS AMBITIOUS DRAGONPhoto courtesy of the HKJC IT IS A LONGSTANDING PHILOSOPHY AT WAIKATO STUD TO SEEK STRONG FINISHING SIRE PROSPECTS. WELCOME TO As seen with CENTAINE, O’REILLY and PINS, it is a policy that has served us extremely well, so when we learnt of the international triple G1 winner PACO BOY’s availability in 2011, we jumped at the chance. The GREEN DESERT line sire fits ideally into our selection criteria. Following on from early two-year-old success, PACO BOY achieved a remarkable three- year-old season, only ever starting in quality black-print races. His seven outings at 3 resulted in five black-type wins and culminated with G1 glory in the G1 Prix de la Foret. Renowned for his blistering turn of foot, he finished his racing career WAIKATO STUD with three international G1 wins and the distinction of 8 group level victories. Beyond his vital ability to quicken and compete at the highest level, he confirms our commitment to the future. We believe we have no future without the assurance of ownership. You, our customers, are entitled to feel confident of continuity. Continuity it would seem is something we are pretty good at. In the WS brochure a decade ago, Garry wrote: Waikato’s senior stallion Centaine has done it all, right through to passing the half century mark in stakes winners. His two-year-olds show their class from day one with maturity they carry their form through to the “highest level, and lately his broodmare daughters have been continuing the G1 tradition.
