Dear All

It is the time of the year that we reflect on past events and look forward to the future.

I want to thank everyone for your efforts throughout 2013. It has been a year of some lows but many highs and we can all feel very proud of our efforts and achievements. We all know that Darley has many moving parts that work together with the aim of providing Sheikh Mohammed enjoyment from his horses and I encourage all of you to reflect on the successes that we have enjoyed in 2013.

There were many great moments and achievements, such as: EXCEED AND EXCEL being crowned sire in and his homebred daughter Guelph victorious in four Group 1s. The feats of DAWN APPROACH, flying the flag for NEW APPROACH in carrying the colours to win the 2,000 Guineas and the St James’s Palace Stakes. The brave win of FARHH in the QIPCO for Godolphin, homebred in England and raised in Ireland. The ongoing development of our racing team in , putting us in the top five of owners and breeders there. The win of ALPHA in the Woodward Stakes at Saratoga – an American homebred by Bernardini. A Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf win for OUTSTRIP – Australian sired (Exceed And Excel), American dam (Asi Siempre), homebred in England, raised in Ireland, pretrained by our team in England and a success for Godolphin.

We have much to look forward to in 2014 – new crops of two year olds, three year olds with Classic chances, wonderful older horses, emerging and, hopefully, plenty of success that we can all share and enjoy.

We are spread far and wide and we are large in number – 1,221 of us today. To each of you, thank you so much for your efforts for Sheikh Mohammed over the last 12 months and, most importantly, I hope that you and your families enjoy a happy Christmas and a wonderful 2014.

Regards

Olly

Darley December 2013

A new face in 2014 With Peter Snowden leaving us at the end of April next year, John O’Shea has recently been appointed as Sheikh Mohammed’s trainer in Australia. John, who will join us in May 2014, grew up in a racing and farming family near Cairns in Queensland. He took out his training licence in in 1999 following years with legendary trainers Tommy Smith, and Bart Cummings. John’s first G1 winner in 2002 Shot Of Thunder and he has since had success at the highest level with horses such as six-time G1 winner Racing To Win; outstanding colts Foxwedge and Charge Forward; and multiple G1-winning Private Steer and Sea Siren. A family man, John is married to Isabelle and has four children. We look forward to welcoming him next year.

Good luck Peter Snowden has been our Head Trainer in Australia since our acquisition of the Woodlands operation in 2008. Peter recently decided to leave Darley in 2014 to set up his own training stable with his son, Paul. Peter has achieved many milestones during his time with us, including recording a clean sweep of Australia’s two-year-old G1 races in 2010/11 where Champion Sepoy won the Blue Diamond and Golden Slipper and Helmet won the Sires’ Produce and Champagne Stakes. In February this year Peter trained his 1,000th winner for Sheikh Mohammed, a number that has since climbed to 1,190 and includes 190 Stakes wins and 27 Group 1 wins. We wish Peter and the Snowden family all our very best for the future and thank him for all his hard work and dedication for the past six years.

Darley December 2013 Around the world Dubai 2020 One of the most significant events of this year was the announcement on 27th November that Dubai won the race to host the 2020 World Expo with the theme “Connecting Minds, Creating The Future”.

Winning the bid means that Dubai will become the first city in the Middle East to host the World Expo, a successor to the Great Exhibition of the 19th and early 20th centuries, which showcases the latest in architecture and technology and enables the world to come together on issues of international importance such as the global economy, sustainable development and improved quality of life for the world’s population.

The six-month event, which is held every five years and attended by millions, will give Dubai and the United Emirates invaluable global exposure.

Darley December 2013

Shiomi Farm In November 2008, we purchased a 900-acre plot of land in the north island of Japan, Hokkaido, named Shiomi Farm. 3.5km in length, Shiomi Farm stretches along the southern coast of the island and has beautiful ocean views and a temperate climate.

This purchase was an important development for us as the new farm is double the size of our existing six farms dotted across Hokkaido. Due to its size and land quality, and our subsequent ability to consolidate our stock and improve their rearing, Shiomi Farm will provide us the opportunity to consolidate our place as a leading owner/breeder in JRA racing.

While Shiomi Farm has been used for horse breeding by its previous owners, the Nishiyama family, we have invested heavily in pasture, land improvements and construction to create an efficient workplace and horse breeding facility. Completed in October this year, our phased development since 2009 now consists of a foaling unit, 10 barns, a quarantine facility, a compost facility, housing for 15 staff members and their families and a farm office for our veterinarians and maintenance teams.

We are incredibly proud of the high standard to which Shiomi has been developed and we hope to foal approximately 80% of our foaling mares in Japan at Shiomi in 2014. Shiomi is also now home to about 75% of our youngstock in Japan.

Darley Flying Start 2013 has been an important year for Darley Flying Start as it has seen the 10th Anniversary of the programme. To mark the occasion and the success of its graduates, Darley Flying Start hosted a reunion coinciding with the graduation of the 2011 – 2013 trainees at Kildangan Stud in Ireland in June.

Over 100 alumni of the programme are now working in 20 countries on five continents, creating a network of professionals that will continuously strengthen the racing and breeding industries.

Dubai International Thoroughbred Internships 2013 has seen our first group of 15 Chinese university graduates complete the Dubai International Thoroughbred Internships programme, which has been a significant accomplishment for us.

Many of you will know that the Interns aren’t necessarily horse people. Rather, they are from various professional tertiary backgrounds such as Law, Finance, Economics, Veterinary Medicine, Foreign Languages, Marketing, Genetics and English. This was our intention from the outset – to gather a young group of Chinese professionals, introduce them to the horse business around the world, help them gain a broad understanding of the global thoroughbred industry and international best practice, in addition to helping them gain an appreciation for the history, culture and future of Sheikh Mohammed’s home, the United Arab Emirates.

Due to the success of the first programme, the favourable impression the first group made on Sheikh Mohammed when they met him last December (pictured) and his enthusiasm for education generally, we increased the number of interns in our second class to 23. This group of trainees began their 10-month course in August this year and will graduate in June, 2014.

Darley December 2013

On a related note, Matt Hill, who many of you will know, has recently accepted a very special opportunity to become the Manager of The Royal Studs. Matt has been our DITI Training Manager for the last two years and has been instrumental in the success of the programme. We will miss him but wish him, and their family all the best for the future. While his are big shoes to fill, Darley Flying Start graduate of 2010 Bill Wong has kindly agreed to take on the role of temporary DITI training manager. Bill, who is based in Hong Kong, has been involved in the Dubai Internships since inception and who, as an existing part of our DITI team, will do an excellent job.

We sincerely thank all of you who have made the interns feel welcome, contributed to their learning and given up your valuable time to do so, and we want you to know that in doing so you are playing a huge part in helping us achieve one of Sheikh Mohammed’s ambitions.

Jockey Training Programme In 2013 we also held our inaugural Jockey Training Programme, another of our educational initiatives focussed on China. 12 riders from different parts of China arrived in Newmarket in late April to attend a tailor-made, 8-week thoroughbred riding development course at the British Racing School (BRS).

During the course the already competent jockeys were coached in a wide range of equine and racing skills such as stable management, simulator training, riding both at the BRS and for local trainers, race tactics, fitness training, lectures and language training enabling them to return to riding in China with increased skill and international experience.

While in Newmarket, the jockeys were also introduced to Darley and Dubai through a series of lectures given by our Interns, visited our Dalham Hall Stud and pre-training yard Hamilton Hill and attended the sales and racing.

The jockeys also graduated in China in June with the Interns.

Darley December 2013

The Kildangan Gallery In August this year, we opened The Kildangan Gallery, a new visitor centre built at our Kildangan Stud in Ireland. It showcases our history and demonstrates where and how Kildangan fits into the global Darley family.

Now home to many racing trophies won by Godolphin and horses that have been raised on our studs for over a century, the photographs and memorabilia within the Gallery allow us to look back and celebrate not only the horses, but the many people involved in our history and recognise the contributions they have made to our success.

Our new Intranet Communication and supplying you with information are important issues which have been identified by you as areas we should work on. So, as a start (along with this letter to you) we will be launching our new global Intranet on 4th February.

An Intranet is a private website that will allow us all to communicate more easily with each other. In late January, we will provide everyone around the world with their own login details to our new Intranet that you will be able to access from the office, areas at work or from home. It will be full of interesting information, which you will also be able to contribute to, and it will be a great tool to bring us all closer together. You’ll hear more about it soon.

Darley December 2013

Ten To Follow Congratulations to all our Ten To Follow finalists of 2013.

The European & Japanese competition winner was Paul Wilson (Second Person at Rutland Stud in Newmarket) who scored a total of 878 points with a stable full of stars including Tasaday, Dawn Approach, Better Lucky, Farhh, Afsare, Van Der Neer, Dance Card and Almargo.

In America, we have only very recently announced the winner of their TTF. Jim Cox (Marketing) has been neck-and-neck with Joseph Mattingly (Senior Building Maintenance, Gainsborough) for the last month or two, but his shrewd selection of Dance Card who earned Jim 45 points after her 3rd in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint in November, and a tip from UK Marketing’s (and Euro/Jpn TTF finalist!) Mark Knibbs on Anjaz, ensured his success. Well done, Jim.

Australia’s racing year runs from Aug 1-July 31 so our competition there continues. Malcolm Duce from Crown Lodge has taken a strong lead, with selections Complacent, Guelph and Long John proving to be wise choices. Best of luck to all participants in Australia as with another 7 months to go, the title could still be anyone’s.

Next year’s competitions will see some exciting changes including the amalgamation of the northern hemisphere competitions, month-end prizes for key months of the year, annual prizes for the top ten finishers per country and the ultimate prize of a week’s holiday for two to Dubai for the highest points earner in both the northern and southern hemisphere competitions.

The 2014 northern hemisphere competition will begin on Saturday 29th March ($10m Day). Keep an eye on the Intranet in early March next year for further details, lists of horses and tips from those in the know! More information on the Australian 2014/15 competition will of course follow later in the year.
