WIKIPEDIA’S ECONOMIC VALUE Jonathan Band and Jonathan Gerafi policybandwidth In the copyright policy debate, proponents of strong copyright protection tend to be dismissive of the quality of freely available content. In response to counter- examples such as open access scholarly publications and advertising-supported business models (e.g., newspaper websites and the over-the-air television broadcasts viewed by 50 million Americans), the strong copyright proponents center their attack on amateur content. In this narrative, YouTube is for cat videos and Wikipedia is a wildly unreliable source of information. Recent studies, however, indicate that the volunteer-written and -edited Wikipedia is no less reliable than professionally edited encyclopedias such as the Encyclopedia Britannica.1 Moreover, Wikipedia has far broader coverage. Britannica, which discontinued its print edition in 2012 and now appears only online, contains 120,000 articles, all in English. Wikipedia, by contrast, has 4.3 million articles in English and a total of 22 million articles in 285 languages. Wikipedia attracts more than 470 million unique visitors a month who view over 19 billion pages.2 According to Alexa, it is the sixth most visited website in the world.3 Wikipedia, therefore, is a shining example of valuable content created by non- professionals. Is there a way to measure the economic value of this content? Because Wikipedia is created by volunteers, is administered by a non-profit foundation, and is distributed for free, the normal means of measuring value— such as revenue, market capitalization, and book value—do not directly apply. Nonetheless, there are a variety of methods for estimating its value in terms of its market value, its replacement cost, and the value it creates for its users. -

Goldman Sachs can't redefine the credit card, but it can go along for the ride as Apple reimagines the digital wallet. That's the consensus of five experts across the spectrum of credit cards, mobile banking, and payments interviewed by Business Insider after The Wall Street Journal reported last week that the companies would this year launch a co-branded credit card designed to sync with an iPhone app. The experts gave informed speculation and said they didn't have any inside knowledge about the product. “FAKE NEWS!”: President Trump’s Campaign Against the Media on @realdonaldtrump and Reactions To It on Twitter A PEORIA Project White Paper Michael Cornfield GWU Graduate School of Political Management [email protected] April 10, 2019 This report was made possible by a generous grant from William Madway. SUMMARY: This white paper examines President Trump’s campaign to fan distrust of the news media (Fox News excepted) through his tweeting of the phrase “Fake News (Media).” The report identifies and illustrates eight delegitimation techniques found in the twenty-five most retweeted Trump tweets containing that phrase between January 1, 2017 and August 31, 2018. The report also looks at direct responses and public reactions to those tweets, as found respectively on the comment thread at @realdonaldtrump and in random samples (N = 2500) of US computer-based tweets containing the term on the days in that time period of his most retweeted “Fake News” tweets. Along with the high percentage of retweets built into this search, the sample exhibits techniques and patterns of response which are identified and illustrated. The main findings: ● The term “fake news” emerged in public usage in October 2016 to describe hoaxes, rumors, and false alarms, primarily in connection with the Trump-Clinton presidential contest and its electoral result. ● President-elect Trump adopted the term, intensified it into “Fake News,” and directed it at “Fake News Media” starting in December 2016-January 2017. 1 ● Subsequently, the term has been used on Twitter largely in relation to Trump tweets that deploy it. In other words, “Fake News” rarely appears on Twitter referring to something other than what Trump is tweeting about. -

INTRODUCTION The question of what factors lead to economic development has been at the center of economics for over two centuries. Adam Smith, writing in 1776, at- tempted to determine the factors that led to the wealth of nations. He concluded that low taxes, peace and a fair administration of justice would lead to eco- nomic growth (1776: xliii). Despite the straightforward prescription put forth by Smith, many countries have struggled to achieve the goal of economic pros- perity. One can find many examples – Armenia, Bulgaria, Moldova, Romania and Ukraine to name a few – where policies aimed at economic development have either not been effectively implemented or have failed. If the key to eco- nomic development is as simple as the principles outlined by Smith, then why do we see many countries struggling to achieve it? The development process involves working within the given political and economic order to adopt policies that bring about economic growth. Given that political agents are critical to the process, the development of market institu- tions that facilitate economic growth is therefore a problem in ‘public choice’. There have been many explanations for the failure of certain economies to de- velop. A lack of investment in capital, foreign financial aid (Easterly 2001: 26– 45), culture (Lal 1998) and geographic location (Gallup et al. 1998) have all been postulated as potential explanations for the failure of economies to de- velop. -

Religion and Fake News: Faith-based Alternative Information Ecosystems in the U.S. and Europe Christopher Douglas | 6 January 2018 Summary he intersection of fake news and religion is marked by three asymmetries. First, fake news circulates more among Americans than Europeans. Second, fake news circulates T among conservatives more than liberals. Third, fake news for conservatives often feature religious themes. The origin of the fake news information-entertainment ecosystem lies largely in Christian fundamentalism’s cultivation of counter-expertise. The intersection of fake news and religion today is being exploited by Russia to subvert Western democracies and deepen social divisions. Western countries need to strengthen mainstream evidence-based journalism, incorporate conservative religious leaders into mainstream discussions, and detach high religiosity from fake news information ecosystems. This paper explores how Canadian digital feminist activists challenged conservative power over three federal elections with innovative creativity using critical pedagogical humour that resulted in an impromptu online social movement focused on ousting the Prime Minister. CHALLENGING AUTHORITARIAN POWER WITH A SMILE efore Trump, Canadian Conservative Party member Stephen Harper sat as Prime Minister from 2006-2015. Although Harper might appear a stark contrast to the bombastic Trump, B while in power, he enacted policies that were nothing short of a slow erosion of Canadian democracy. He ruled by stealth through a steady and consistent attack on fundamental Canadian values. Harper refused to speak to the media, enacted policies that violated and eroded women’s rights, and vowed to create a “barbaric cultural practices” (Andrew-Gee, 2015, para 1) snitch line targeting immigrants, amongst other inflammatory acts. His actions signalled a turn toward authoritarianism and a battle of competing ideologies. Parallel to Harper’s time in power, the emergence of Web 2.0 social media tools created the opportunity for all kinds of people to engage in online activism as content producers/educators. A good number of those people were women. -
