Twitter, MySpace and Facebook Demystified - by Ted Janusz Q: I hear people talking about Web sites like Twitter, MySpace and Facebook. What are they? And, even more importantly, should I be using them to promote oral implantology? First, you are not alone. A recent survey showed that 70 percent of American adults did not know enough about Twitter to even have an opinion. Tools like Twitter, Facebook and MySpace are components of something else you may have heard people talking about: Web 2.0 , a popular term for Internet applications in which the users are actively engaged in creating and distributing Web content. Web 1.0 probably consisted of the Web sites you saw back in the late 90s, which were nothing more than fancy electronic brochures. Web 1.5 would have been something like Amazon or eBay, sites on which one could buy, sell and leave reviews. What Web 3.0 will look like is anybody's guess! Let's look specifically at the three applications that you mentioned. Tweet, Tweet Twitter - "Twitter is like text messaging, only you can also do it from the Web," says Dan Tynan, the author of the Tynan on Technology blog. "Instead of sending a message to just one person, you can send it to thousands of people at once. You can choose to follow anyone's update (called "tweets") simply by clicking the Follow button on their profile, or vice-versa. The only rule is that each tweet can be no longer than 140 characters." This experiment was designed to explore how knowledge is created and represented on Wikipedia, by working to improve a single article. The overall objective of the class was to give students an understanding of how historians can create “signal” in the “noise” of the Internet and how historians create knowledge using digital media tools. Given that doing “research” online often involves selecting a resource suggested by Google (generally one within the first three to five results),1 this class had larger media literacy goals as well. The students were drawn from all areas of the university, with the only stipulation being that they had to be in their first year. The positive feedback loops inherent in the World Wide Web’s struc- ture greatly influence the way history is consumed, disseminated, and cre- ated online. Google’s algorithms will retrieve an article from Wikipedia, typically displaying it as one of the first links on the results page. Some- one somewhere will decide that the information is “wrong,” and he (it is typically a he)2 will “fix” the information, clicking on the “edit” button to make the change. -

1 Investigating the emotional appeal of fake news using artificial intelligence and human contributions Abstract Purpose: The creation and dissemination of fake news can have severe consequences for a company’s brand. Researchers, policymakers and practitioners are eagerly searching for solutions to get us out of the ‘fake news crisis’. Here, one approach is to use automated tools, such as artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms, in conjunction with human inputs to identify fake news. The study in this article demonstrates how AI and machine learning, with its ability to analyze vast amounts of unstructured data, can help us tell apart fake and real news content. Specifically, this study examines if and how the emotional appeal, i.e., sentiment valence and strength of specific emotions, in fake news content differs from that in real news content. This is important to understand, as messages with a strong emotional appeal can influence how content is consumed, processed and shared by consumers. Design/methodology/approach: The study analyzes a data set of 150 real and fake news articles using an AI application, to test for differences in the emotional appeal in the titles and the text body between fake news and real news content. Findings: The results suggest that titles are a strong differentiator on emotions between fake and real news and that fake news titles are substantially more negative than real news titles. In addition, the results reveal that the text body of fake news is substantially higher in displaying specific negative emotions, such as disgust and anger, and lower in displaying positive emotions, such as joy. -

According to data from the US Census, 81% of United States homes had a computer with internet access in 2016 and 76% of households had at least 1 one smartphone. Facebook is one of the internet’s largest services with 1.59 billion daily active 2 users and 2.41 billion monthly active users as of June 2019. Facebook’s massive user base gives it a platform to influence many parts of the world. Facebook began as a platform for connecting college students but now is a behemoth in entertainment, news, advertising, and more. Small decisions in how content is prioritized and what content is allowed to be posted have consequences across many cultures. This enormous power makes Facebook not only a social network that connects friends but a global leader that shapes the future.
