The volume traces his literary trajectory, and the ways in which he has reinvented himself as a writer. The Post-Boom in Spanish American Fiction Abstract The article discusses the dating of the beginning of the Post-Boom, the factors involved in discussing it, and lists possible representative writers belonging to it. The views of Skármeta, Allende and others are reported and a list of possible Post-Boom characteristics is suggested. It is argued that there are difficulties in the ywa of relating the Post-Boom easily to Postmodernism, but that the notion of Post- colonialism may prove helpful in future criticism. Tricontinental Modernities: Vargas Llosa's Late Turn against Imperialism in El sueño del celta __________________________________ NICHOLAS BIRNS EUGENE LANG COLLEGE, THE NEW SCHOOL 1. Revising the Celtic In its mixture of the personal and the political, its concentration on an individual making difficult moral choices, and its wide historical lens, Mario Vargas Llosa's El sueño del celta (2010), published only weeks after he garnered that year’s Nobel Prize for Literature, is reminiscent of many of his earlier novels. I wish to contend that, even more, it is an effective sequel to his 1981 novel La guerra del fin del mundo, not only treating many of the same themes but also providing a contrast between Vargas Llosa in the wake of his disillusionment with left-wing radicalism and the Peruvian writer after more or less thirty years being on the center-right. Whereas the Brazil-set novel seemed aimed at the errors of leftist utopianism, the more recent work indicts imperialism in Africa, Latin America, and Europe. This essay will show how this “tricontinental” agenda is complemented by a “modernity” that, for Vargas Llosa, is both ideological and stylistic. The Celt of El sueño del celta is Roger Casement, the British government official, imperial muckraker, and, ultimately, committed Irish nationalist revolutionary. But Casement is not the first Celt (a category that includes, among others, both the Scots and the Irish) in Vargas Llosa’s oeuvre. Galileo Gall, the chronologically inclined anarchist in La guerra del fin del mundo was a Scotsman as well. Furthermore, Gall was originally intended to be, like Casement, an Irishman, only, as Efraín Kristal points out, becoming a Scotsman in the “final version” (125). -

NARRATOLOGY, RHETORIC, AND TRANSITIONAL JUSTICE: THE FUNCTION OF NARRATIVE IN REDRESSING THE LEGACY OF MASS ATROCITIES. STEVEN RITA-PROCTER A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN ENGLISH LITERATURE YORK UNIVERSITY, TORONTO, ONTARIO OCTOBER 2018 © STEVEN RITA-PROCTER, 2018 Abstract This doctoral dissertation, Narratology, Rhetoric, and Transitional Justice: the Function of Narrative in Redressing the Legacy of Mass Atrocities, examines the extent to which the success and feasibility of human rights tribunals and truth commissions are dependent upon the ways in which the past is “narrativized”1 in State-sponsored legal reports and subsequently promulgated through the stories we tell. Juxtaposing three historical cases that have constituted transitional justice according to divergent ideological paths, Narratology, Rhetoric, and Transitional Justice compares and cross-references the final reports on three high-profile transitional justice cases: the Nuremberg tribunals (1945-49), the Argentine “Trial of the Juntas” (1985), and the Canadian Truth and Reconciliation Commission (2008-15), to study the ways in which these reports have shaped the collective or national memories of various historical traumas. The dissertation examines how the final reports on truth commissions and war crimes tribunals deploy a highly sophisticated set of rhetorical and narratological techniques in order to fix a single, specific version of historical events in the cultural memories with disparate aims in bringing together a fractured nation. By highlighting the significant degree of artistry that go into preparing these reports, it examines how and why transitional governments are often motivated to frame historical violence in order to elicit collective feelings of outrage, shame, guilt, or forgiveness. -

Vargas Llosa came to prominence in the 1960s as a talented short-story writer and a masterful practitioner of the novel. His early novels were considered innovative from a technical standpoint, and politically engaged. He was concerned with the theme of corruption and its effects on individuals and communities, and he found a literary means to express it: the crossing of spatial and temporal planes. In the 1970s he reconsidered his admiration for the Cuban Revolution and other leftist causes, and reoriented both his literary and his cultural concerns in line with anti- authoritarian democratic free market liberalism. In his novels of the period he adds humour, irony and a new kind of literary complexity to his repertoire and becomes interested in the theme of fanaticism, and his new literary technique involves alternating between a realistic register and one that is clearly imaginary, based on dreams and fantasies. After his unsuccessful bid to become president of Peru in 1990, Vargas Llosa returned to literature with a more circumspect view of 1 political action. With TheFeastoftheGoat(2000), he finds a synthesis between the theme of corruption and the theme of fanaticism, and begins to develop a new literary procedure, which informs The Way to Paradise (2003), The Bad Girl (2006)andTheDreamoftheCelt(2010): the creation of a literary register that can be read simultaneously in a realistic register or as a fantasy. -

Introduction: Two Novels “Un acontecimiento capital de la historia de las naciones occidentales es el descubrimiento del Oriente. Sería más exacto hablar de una con- ciencia del Oriente”, writes Jorge Luis Borges in the opening para- graph of “Las mil y una noches”, his essay on the Arabian Nights (Borges 1980: 57).1 While Sheherazade, whenever she appears in Borges’ tales, reminds the reader of the mythic qualities of the Arabic fairy-tales and their charming gesture, Borges as the author of the essay delivers more theoretical observations on the relation between Orient and Occident. More than 50 years after its publication, the es- say accrues a twofold, highly suggestive and topical meaning for con- temporary readers. From a ‘political’ perspective, Borges anticipates Edward Said’s notion of the Orient as an occidental construction of “otherness” (Said 1978), which simultaneously excludes all hege- monic thought, as it reveals itself, for example, in Samuel Hunting- ton’s The Clash of Civilizations (Huntington 1996). Borges stresses the fact that the relation of Orient and Occident is undoubtedly one of the most established and at the same time proble- matic, if not even tragic (Borges 1980: 59) figures of thought in cul- tural history. Also, as he points out, the idea of the Orient is associated with Islam.
