5 ABSTRACT GOMES, Rafael Tomazoni. The samba for solo piano by Cesar Camargo Mariano. Dissertation of mater in music, University of Santa Catarina State (UDESC), Art Center (CEART), post graduate program in music (PPGMUS). Florianópolis, 2012. This dissertation deals with relations between the piano – musical instrument associated with european culture and difficul mobility – and samba – musical genre associated with low classes and a certain image of african-brazilian culture. Throughout the twentieth century, through the performance of pianeiros, the practice of the piano in samba established itself as a tradition that Cesar Camargo Mariano would to fall heir. The first two chapters stand out periods in which the piano works significantly in the history of samba: 1) from the late nineteenth century until the 1930s with musical genres that originated the samba through the pianeiros; 2) and in the 1960s, in formation of trio (bass, piano and drums), with the instrumental repertoire of bossa nova and samba-jazz. The third chapter consists of the analysis of three musical pieces recorded by Cesar Camargo Mariano in the album Solo Brasileiro (Polygram, 1994): Cristal, Samambaia and Minha Mágoa, which aims to recognize characteristic features of the tradition of pianeiros the musical text, as well as identify stylistic features of samba for solo piano by Cesar Camargo Mariano. Key-words: Piano, Samba, Cesar Camargo Mariano. 6 LISTA DE ILUSTRAÇÕES Figura 1 José Barbosa da Silva, o “Sinhô” .........................................................................18 Figura 2 • Trio Da Paz Honors Getz and Gilberto Posted 9/5/2012
Trio da Paz Honors Getz and Gilberto Posted 9/5/2012 Trio da Paz has more than enough firepower to command any stage in jazz all by itself. The Brazilian expatriate supergroup of guitarist Romero Lubambo, bassist/composer Nilson Matta and drummer Duduka Da Fonseca has been moving Brazilian jazz forward for two decades. But Trio da Paz plus vibraphonist Joe Locke, tenor saxophonist Harry Allen and vocalist Maúcha Adnet constitutes an embarrassment of riches. Trio da Paz (Photo: Frank Stewart) Their annual twoweek residency at Dizzy’s Club CocaCola at Jazz at Lincoln Center has become a popular endofsummer tradition for New Yorkers seeking cool tropical melodies as a respite from the city’s August heat. The theme of this year’s edition, seen Aug. 24, was the transcultural collaboration of Stan Getz and João Gilberto—who, together with Antônio Carlos Jobim, turned the quiet revolution of Brazilian bossa nova into a worldwide phenomenon in the early 1960s. But the Getz/Gilberto tribute was really just a starting point for the trio’s excursion into samba jazz and beyond, a bridging of North and South American jazz styles that allowed for soaring improvisation. Bossa nova and samba jazz were created in the late 1950s by Brazilian musicians who were listening to Stateside artists exploring “cool jazz,” such as Elvin Jones, Wes Montgomery, Miles Davis and John Coltrane. Bossa nova is songbased; it is, as Jobim alumnus Adnet explained, “a little guitar … love and music, quiet and sensual and cool.” Samba jazz, by contrast, is a blend of Brazilian rhythm with jazz improvisation that is more instrumental and open to extended blowing.

JAZZ EDUCATION IN ISRAEL by LEE CAPLAN A Thesis submitted to the Graduate School-Newark Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Graduate Program in Jazz History and Research written under the direction of Dr. Henry Martin and approved by ___________________________________ ___________________________________ Newark, New Jersey May,2017 ©2017 Lee Caplan ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS JAZZ EDUCATION IN ISRAEL By LEE CAPLAN Thesis Director Dr. Henry Martin Jazz Education in Israel is indebted to three key figures – Zvi Keren, Arnie Lawrence, and Mel Keller. This thesis explores how Jazz developed in Israel and the role education played. Jazz Education in Israel discusses the origin of educational programs such as the Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music (1985) and the New School Jazz Program (1986). One question that was imperative to this study was attempting to discover exactly how Jazz became a cultural import and export within Israel. Through interviews included in this thesis, this study uncovers just that. The interviews include figures such as Tal Ronen, Dr. Arnon Palty, Dr. Alona Sagee, and Keren Yair Dagan. As technology gets more advanced and the world gets smaller, Jazz finds itself playing a larger role in humanity as a whole. iii Preface The idea for this thesis came to me when I was traveling abroad during the summer of 2015. I was enjoying sightseeing throughout the streets of Ben Yehuda Jerusalem contemplating topics when all of a sudden I came across a jam session. I went over to listen to the music and was extremely surprised to find musicians from all parts of Europe coming together in a small Jazz venue in Israel playing bebop standards at break-neck speeds.

MUSICA THEORICA 201606 SCIENTIFIC ARTICLE Date of submission: 20/02/2016 Date of approval: 07/04/2016 MaPA and EdiPA: two analytical tools for text-sound-image interrelations in music videos Fausto Borém Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais [email protected] Abstract: Two consecutive analytical tools are presented here: MaPA (Map of Audiovisual Performance) and EdiPA (Audiovisual Performance Edition). I introduce these tools as a possible way of organizing and representing the content of music videos as primary sources of analysis. Both tools aim at understanding the interrelationsof the trinomial text-sound-image which is fundamental to the interaction between musical performance and its context. The construction of a MaPA begins with the selection of isolated photograms or a sequence of photograms extracted from a video with the intention to show the relationships between music and staging elements (facial expressions, larger body gestures, props, lighting, camera effects, image manipulation, filming techniques etc.). The EdiPA is built to graphically highlight fundamental sound elements which are transcribed from the video with some kind of music notation (such as the traditional score, lead sheets, graphics, spectrograms etc.) over which photograms from MaPAs are overlaid with its respective video timings (in minutes and seconds) and a succinct textual information to facilitate the comprehension of the text-sound-image trinomial. The use of both analytical tools is illustrated here with various types of MaPAs and EdiPAs samples, from simple ones to more complex ones.
