LESSON: Drill Press Intro LESSON: Drill Press Intro Rationale Big Ideas Curricular Objectives 0 MR. BUCHANAN Introduce the drill press and its -Complex tasks require different -Identify the main parts of the drill press 0 TOC: component parts, demonstrate its technologies and tools at different -Installing a drill bit DATE: Nov 15, 2018 safe use stages -Understand the relationship between drill bit COURSE: Physics/engineering 11 -Complex tasks require the size and drill press speed BLOCK: sequencing of skills -Demonstrate safe use of the drill press with a ROOM #: jig and 2 clamps TIME: CLASS LENGTH: 80 minutes Resources Adaptations/IEPs 0 Laptop at Steve’s station; Wifi connected, powerpoint ready Unit: Woodworking 0 Prep drill press station; make it clean 0 Transition/Intro to 0 Have drill bits and clamps nearby woodworking 0 Have scrap piece ready with crosshairs and circles drawn 0 Drill Press Safety 0 Have green drill press max depth set to barely touch the spoil 0 Etc. board 0 Print Drill Press Safety Quiz (25) Glossary Communication Objectives Skills Objectives -Chuck: Jacobs chuck -Drill Press Safety Quiz -Changing drill bits -Chuck Key -Students demonstrate clamping and drilling -Safe jig and clamping techniques -Jaws under supervision before being given open -Theory behind changing drill press speeds (only -Pulleys and Belts tool use teacher actually changes pulleys) -Pecking -Try to get everyone on a machine today but that some -Vertical Stop will need to wait for other work days -Drill bit sizes -Drill bits: twist bit, brad point, spade bit, Forstner bit Intro 0 Attendance and class announcements 5-10 mins 0 Whatever else Steve has planned Body DEMO o Ask who’s used a drill press before? How long ago? 40 mins o I know you guys love doing safety tests and demos; lets make a deal, keep the phones away and pay attention and it will go faster ▪ I have to make sure you’re paying attention so you can use it safely, you don’t put others at risk and so you don’t damage the tool ➢ Open powerpoint o Ask the class why we don’t just use handheld drills for everything ▪ Using bigger bits – Has anyone ever had a power drill bind and torque on them? ▪ Drilling more precise holes at perfect right angles – Handheld drills wobble, drill press has a perpendicular table ▪ Drilling multiple holes at the same depth – better with depth stop o (next slide) Here’s what makes the machine go ▪ Motor turns a pulley, pulley turns the spindle. Different belt configurations = different speeds. ▪ Sounds like you’re all good at math and engineering and gears – see if they can figure out if the drill is set to high or low speed ➢ It’s set to low speed. The teacher sets this; don’t change it ▪ Explain why speeds matter – larger diameter bit = slower speed o (next slide) Here’s some bits you’ll find near the drill press – briefly explain each bit o (next slide) Here’s how the bits get held in the machine – this is a closeup of a Jacobs chuck ▪ Explain how the Jacobs chuck holds the bit with 3 jaws that move simultaneously ▪ ➢ Gather everyone around drill press o Open up the top; here’s the behind the scenes view. That’s probably the last you’ll see it, they’re always set low Commented [RB1]: Student asked if it was safe to run o Grab chuck key with the top off – maybe don’t do this next time ▪ They’re usually attached to the machine; wrong key can mangle gears and not tighten well ▪ Don’t leave the key in the chuck o Demonstrate changing drill bits ▪ Explain how much shank to put in chuck ▪ We want to maximize surface area of teeth touching bit shank o Next thing to look out for is how deep are we drilling ▪ Spoil boards are replaceable, metal bed not so much ▪ Show the depth stop on tall drill press ▪ Show the table adjustment lever on the green drill press o Show prepared scrap piece with crosshairs – ask which is easier to line up, the crosshairs or circle Commented [RB2]: Some confusion about this. Next time o Demonstrate lining up the centre point and crosshairs specifify the crosshairs and circle are ideal, crosshairs alone ▪ When lined up, lock the spindle works fine, circle alone doesn’t work o Clamp with one clamp (unlock spindle stop) ▪ Explain how it’s often safer to use 2 clamps – pivot the piece -> clamp with second Commented [RB3]: Some students starting to get restless ▪ Always put longer pieces on your left side by this point. The laugh about whacking someone else on o – Total demo time ~ 15mins the machine to the left was making light of what should be a serious situation ➢ Drill Press Safety Quiz ~ 15 mins ➢ Closure 0 Teacher demonstrates drill bit changes, crosshairs layout and how to line up on centre point, clamping, and drilling with even pressure and 10 mins periodic sawdust clearings 0 Get each student to demonstrate clamping and drilling a scrap piece if it’s their first time on the machine (not necessarily today) Assessment 0 Drill press safety quiz – perfect score; or write down the wrong answers on the back and why the right answer is right 10 mins 0 Safe clamping and drilling technique (on scrap piece, under teacher supervision) Extra Stuff Plan B https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uC7CQE3amR0 – Drilling Slow Motion No plan B this time its do or die https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=36AD6yuPH0c https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LeBFcCTXZkA – Forstner Bits https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BHCp6mMML4s – Funny Angry Drill Fail Compilation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yPRFW2MHigE – Drill Press Fail – PSA to be Safe .
