    THE EAST INDIA CLUB SOME ACCOUNT OF THOSE MEMBERS OF THE CLUB & STAFF WHO LOST THEIR LIVES IN WORLD WAR ONE 1914-1919 & WORLD WAR TWO 1939-1945 THE NAMES LISTED ON THE CLUB MEMORIALS IN THE HALL DEDICATION The independent ambition of both Chairman Iain Wolsey and member David Keating to research the members and staff honoured on the Club’s memorials has resulted in this book of Remembrance. Mr Keating’s immense capacity for the necessary research along with the Chairman’s endorsement and encouragement for the project was realised through the generosity of member Nicholas and Lynne Gould. The book was received in to the Club on the occasion of a commemorative service at St James’s Church, Piccadilly in September 2014 to mark the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War. Second World War members were researched and added in 2016 along with the appendices, which highlights some of the episodes and influences that involved our members in both conflicts. In October 2016, along with over 190 other organisations representing clubs, livery companies and the military, the club contributed a flagstone of our crest to the gardens of remembrance at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. The German forces retreated to the Spanish territory of Rio Muni and were evacuated to Spain and interned there. The allied force was commanded by Brigadier General Sir Charles Macpherson Dobell, a Canadian. Dobell was born in Quebec City, the son of an MP, and educated in Canada and England before graduating in 1890 from the Royal Military College of Canada. In the high noon of Empire, Canadian officers frequently served in British regiments and staffs; Dobell joined the Royal Welch Fusiliers. His postings reflected the military dimension of Imperial power, serving with British forces in the Boer War, in Nigeria and in the Boxer Rebellion in China. In 1913, he was promoted to Brigadier General as Inspector General of the West African Field Force. INDEX ARMENIAN GENOCIDE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE GO TO MASTER INDEX OF WARFARE 1825 Ever since the 14th Century, Turkey had been impressing the sons of Christian families into a special yeni chéri or “new army” branch of its armed forces. The size of this special religiously and ethnically segregated brigade of “janissaries” had reached 135,000, and it had become politically powerful, and it had become obnoxious to Muslims. The Sultan therefore had his faithful Muslim officers surround this Christian brigade with Muslim formations of overwhelming size, and after a brief struggle all 135,000 were slaughtered.1 1. The same sort of thing would happen at the conclusion of the Iran/Iraq war in our contemporary era. Iran had placed liberal secular young men in a special formation, and had placed this special formation in charge of a given sector of the frontier for the duration of the long war against Iraq. But at the end of the war, faced with the specter of having to reincorporate these liberal secular men into the Khomeini revolution, the religious leadership decided to trick them, disarm them, charge them with treason for not having behaved with sufficient martyr spirit (that is, basically, the treason of still being alive at the end of the war), and machine-gun them right there in the positions they had defended for nine years on the Iraqi border.
