[22 Nov 1568 William HICKMOTE/Margarete HENELY igi] William was probably born at Horsmonden but died at Goudhurst in 1599. His last will and testament indicates he was a yeoman of Goudhurst, his wife was named Margaret [Heneley], he had at least four children at the time of his death

1 – Mary, Thomas, Richard and William – and he owned land at and . Margaret Hickemote nee Henley died and was buried at Goudhurst in 1609. Probable children, all baptized at Goudhurst: Joane (1576-6), Thomas (1577), Richard (1581-1601), Mary (1583).

23 Dec 1572 George HICMOTTE/Marie AUSTEN Goudhurst igi Records in the National Archives mention a George Hickmott of Aylsford, yeoman in 1600.

02 Oct 1598 William Henry HICKMOTE/Anne COGGER Cranbrook igi Although still to be confirmed, we now think that William may have been born at Horsmonden in around 1570, the eldest son of Thomas and Elizabeth Hickmote nee Kingswoode of that village. He died and was buried at Cranbrook in 1636. William’s last will and testament indicates that he was a butcher and owned land and properties in both the parishes of Cranbrook and Horsmonden. His properties at Cranbrook were left to his oldest son William (see his details below). Those at Horsmonden were willed to his youngest son Thomas (to be assumed once Thomas reached the age of 26).

Susan McAlpinbe tells us that Anne was baptized at Sandhurst in Kent on 18 November 1576, the daughter of Simon Cogger and Agnes Leeche. She and William lived at Cranbrook after their marriage and had nine children there: William (1600-56), Thomas (1602-3), Mary (1604-51), Anne (1606-75), Katherine (1609-75), Richard (1610), Patience (1612-13), Elizabeth (1616) and Thomas (1618-86). Anne was buried at Cranbrook on 3 November 1648).

The last will and testament of William junior indicates that his wife was Elizabeth, he had a brother Thomas, and at least six children: William, Thomas, Mary who married Edward Vincle, Judith, Jane Rappon (?) and another daughter who married Edward Glover (?).

26 Nov 1599 Wylliam HICKMOT/Margarett STEPHEN Goudhurst Tyler Wylliam was probably the son of Wylliam and Margaret Hickmote nee Heneley (who were married at Horsmonden in 1568). Known children all born at Goudhurst: William (1601-14), Marie (1603), Margaret (1606), Elizabeth (1609- 9), Thomas (1618), Elizabeth (1622-22), Richard (1623), Mary (1625-5), George (1626-6), John (1628-8)

9 May 1599 William HICKMOT Goudhurst Tyler William’s last will and testament, made out in the ‘one and fortieth year of the reign of Queen Elizabeth’ [1599], indicated that he was a yeoman of Goudhurst,

2 that his wife was named Margaret [Heneley], that he had at least four children at the time of his death – Mary, Thomas, Richard and William – and that he owned land at Lamberhurst and Brenchley.

1600s

08 Jun 1601 Thomas HICKMOTT/Margaret COMBAR Goudhurst Tyler Thomas was probably the son of William Hickmote and Margaret Heneley who were married at Horsmonden in 1598 and had a son, Thomas, baptized at Goudhurst in 1577. We think that he died at Goudhurst in 1604 (see below - the burial notice describes him as ‘Thomas of Rucke’, suggesting that he may have lived at Ruck Farm which is about a mile southwest of Horsmonden on the Lamberhurst Road). Assumed children: Margaret (1602, Horsmonden) and Elizabeth (1604, Horsmonden).

12 Jul 1636 George HICKMOT/Eliz RENNOLDES Goudhurst Tyler Born in around 1600, we think that George was the second son of John Hickmotte and Mary Stonestreate although it is possible he was the eldest son of the John Hickmott who died at Horsmonden in 1608. The marriage licences show that George was from Horsmonden and was around 36 years old, Elizabeth was from Goudhurst, the widow of Robert Reynoldes. The records of marriage held at Canterbury show that a Francis Hickmott, a mercer of , stood bond for George and Elizabeth’s marriage. Elizabeth died and was buried at Horsmonden in 1643, George sometime before that (see below). Known children: John (1637-1703, Horsmonden), Walter(1640, Horsmonden) and Elizabeth (1642, Horsmonden).

The parish registers show that an Ann Morris was baptized at Cranbrook in 1789 (parents unknown) and another in 1795 (dau of John and Mary Morris). The 1841 census shows George (50 year-old agricultural labourer) and Ann (50) living on Milkhouse Street in Cranbrook with their 13 year-old daughter Silvester. An Anna Hickmott, aged 53, was buried at Cranbrook in 1842. The 1851 census shows the widowed George (61) as a lodger at the home of Hannah Springett (a 53 year-old farmer born in Cranbrook) on Mill Lane in Cranbrook. The 1861 census has George (71 year-old widower and farmer of four acres) lodging on Road in Cranbrook with his son William and his family. We think he died at Cranbrook the same year. [24 Jun 1823 John HICKMOTT/Eliz THIRKELL Maidstone mkmi] (Wit: George and Sarah Thirkell). I am assuming this the right couple since they named one of their daughters Sarah ‘Thirkill’ (see below). Since they named their first daughter Elizabeth Burges, I am also assuming that John was born at Frittenden in 1793, the son of Stephen Hickmott and Elizabeth Burges. The LDS index shows that an Elizabeth Pennick Thirkle, the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth, was baptized at Benenden in 1799. The 1851 census shows John (56 year-old farmer of 24 acres and grocer born at Frittenden) and Elizabeth (52, Benenden) at Balcombe House in Frittenden with five children, all born at Frittenden: Elizabeth B. (26), William (19), Olive (15), Hannah (18) and Eleanor E. (11). They were still there in 1861 together with: William (29), Olive (25) and Eleanor (21). John died and was buried at Frittenden on 21 October 1861 (whereupon his son William took over the farm). The 1871 census shows the widowed Elizabeth (71, Benenden) at the home of Eleanor (31, Frittenden) and William West (32 year-old butcher born at Crodon in Surrey) at 16 North End in Croydon. Also present were William and Eleanor’s children – Eleanor (7), William (3), John (1) and Kate (1m) all of whom were born at Croydon - as well as Eleanor’s two sisters: Elizabeth B. (45) and Hannah Hickmott (33) as well as three servants. Elizabeth died at Croydon in 1878. Known children all baptized at Frittenden: Elizabeth Burges (1825), Caroline Flethcher (1826), Mary Ann (1829), William (1832), Sarah Thirkill (1833), Olive (1836), Hannah (1837), Eleanor Elliot (1840).

The 1841 census has Reuben (40 year-old farmer) and Hannah (35) living at the ‘Old Workhouse’ in Frittenden with their two sons: James (4) and Stephen (2). They were still there in 1851: Hannah (45, Smarden), Reuben (52 year-old farmer of 12 acres born at Frittenden), Stephen (12), Harriet (7), Charlotte (5) and Mary H. The 1841 census shows William (40 year-old farmer) and Lydia (35) at Eastwood in Ulcombe with their two children – William (3) and Elizabeth (1) – and two servants: Sarah and Sophia Watts. Lydia died, aged 38, in 1842 and was buried at Frittenden. The 1851 census has the widower William (52 year-old farmer of 130 acres born at Frittenden) at Lashenden Farm with his unmarried brother James (59), tow children – William (12) and Elizabeth (10) – and four servants. William (61) and James (59) and William’s two children were still there in 1861 plus two servants. William died at Frittenden in 1868. 17 Jan 1837 Thomas HICKMOTT/Elizabeth JUDGE Frittenden igi (Wit: Stephen Hickmott, Ann Munk, Ann Wise). In view of the witnesses, we think that Thomas was the son (born at Frittenden in around 1815) of Thomas and Mary Ann Hickmott nee Wraight (who were married at Frittenden in 1813). We suspect that Elizabeth died at Frittenden in 1838/9 while giving birth to the couple’s daughter Emily (who died the same day – see below). The 1841 census shows Thomas (25 year-old agricultural labourer) living with his parents and siblings at Pore Farm in Frittenden. We think that Thomas later married the widow Alice Bowles in the Cranbrook RD in 1846. He and she had a daughter, Mary Ann Hickmott, before John’s death at Frittenden in 1857.

The 1891 census shows John (69 year-old widower and farm labourer born at Frittenden) as a pauper in the Cranbrook Union Workhouse (also present was a 14 year-old Rose Hickmott who was born at Cranbrook – Rose could have been the daughter of William Thomas). The censuses show that Alice Bowles was born at Boughton Monchelsea in around 1820, probably the daughter of Mary and John Bowles, a blacksmith, of Frittenden. She had a daughter, Sabina Bowles, before her marriage and another, Mary Anne Hickmott, with Thomas at Frittenden in 1846. Thomas, then aged 32, died and was buried at Frittenden in 1847. The 1851 census shows the widowed Alice (31, B-Monchelsea) living at Back Lane Cottage in Frittenden (two doors away from a John and Elizabeth Bowles). With Alice were her two daughters – Sabina Bowles (10, B-Monchelsea) and Marian (4) – and Richard Baker (69, Frittenden), a lodger.
