  • The Rosh Chodesh Planner Was Designed to Serve As a Resource for Shluchos When Planning Women's Programs. Many Years Ago, When
בס"ד PREFACE The Rosh Chodesh Planner was designed to serve as a resource for shluchos when planning women’s programs. Many years ago, when one of the first shluchim arrived in Pittsburgh, PA, prepared to combat the assimilation of America through hafotzas hamayonos, one of the directives of the Rebbe to the shlucha was that it did not suffice for her to only become involved in her husband’s endeavors, but that she should become involved in her own areas of activities as well. Throughout the years of his nesiyus, the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Nesi Dorenu, appreciated and valued the influential role the woman plays as the akeres habayis. This is evident in the many sichos which the Rebbe dedicated specifically to Jewish women and girls worldwide. Involved women are catalysts for involved families and involved communities. Shluchos, therefore, have always dedicated themselves towards reaching a broad spectrum of Jewish women from many affiliations, professions and interests. Programs become educational vehicles, provide networking and outreach opportunities for the participants, and draw them closer in their unified quest for a better and more meaningful tomorrow. Many shluchos have incorporated a schedule of gathering on a monthly basis. Brochures are mailed out at the onset of the year containing the year’s schedule at a glance. Any major event(s) are incorporated as well. This system offers the community an organized and well-planned view of the year’s events. It lets them know what to expect and gives them the ability to plan ahead. In the z’chus of all the positive accomplishments that have been and are continuously generated from women’s programs, may we be worthy of the immediate and complete Geulah.

The people in the town of Chelm were not known to be the smartest, so this man felt he needed to make sure that he would remember who he was after he went for his dunk and was not dressed. So he came up with the brilliant idea of tying a red ribbon around his hand. Upon coming up out of the mikveh he looked down, and to his shock and horror, he didn't see his red ribbon. Looking up, he saw a man who had a red ribbon tied around his big toe. So he rushed up to him and said, "I know who you are, but can you tell me who I am!" The world has been bathed in an eerie silence which descended upon us between the holidays of Purim and Passover. When we all said, "Mah Nishtana Halila Hazeh," "How is this night different from all other nights?" the answer was so obvious that the question sounded rhetorical. Indeed, it is not only the experience of the ceremonies of the Chag that make them exciting. Rather, when we analyze, consider and discuss why we do what we do when we do it, we become more aware of the purposes of the Mitzvos and the holiday and become closer to Hashem in the process. In the days of old, the public shiurim of Yom Tov were a major part of the celebration. The give and take the part of the day for Hashem, it set a tone – חצי לה' enhanced not only the part of the day identified as the half of the day set aside for celebration in eating and enjoyment of a חצי לכם for the other half, the different nature. Meals could be enjoyed where conversation would surround “what the Rabbi spoke about” and expansion on those ideas would be shared and discussed with everyone present, each at his or her own level. Unfortunately, with the difficulties presented by the current COVID-19 pandemic, many might not be able to make it to Shul, many Rabbis might not be able to present the same Derashos and Shiurim to all the different minyanim under their auspices.

Smith Perhaps THE greatest benefit of choosing as a young adult to become more traditional is that with some age and experience comes a more mature awareness of, and appreciation of, the power of choice. I was raised in a home profoundly committed to Jewish activism, Jewish communal service and the idea of tikkun olam — repairing the world. I sincerely felt overwhelming pride in my Judaism. The State of Israel was revered. Fighting injustice was a core value. Giving tzedakah (charity) and acting like a mensch were so much more important than getting top grades and being the big man on campus. Halacha, Jewish law, was deemed to be quite charming and certainly worthy of our respect, but otherwise antiquated and, therefore, not all that relevant. Children learn early on that choices matter. This usually starts with parents and siblings who encourage us when we’re being adorable and redirect us when we’re making bad, especially unsafe or dangerous choices. Sheldon, R. 2019. On Learning from the Margins: Jewish Nonreligious Grammars within a Secular-Protestant Landscape. Secularism and Nonreligion, 8: 8, pp. 1–6. DOI: https://doi.org/10.5334/snr.107 RESEARCH ARTICLE On Learning from the Margins: Jewish Nonreligious Grammars within a Secular-Protestant Landscape Ruth Sheldon This contribution to the special issue draws on ethnographic fieldwork exploring pluralities of Jewish life across adjacent urban neighbourhoods in London in order to engage with the conceptual questions and empirical omissions that are currently of concern to scholars of nonreligion. Learning from some illustra- tive moments in my fieldwork in which articulations of non-belief in God serendipitously arose, I first consider how marginal Jewish perspectives trouble the conceptual framing of ‘religion/nonreligion’ within (post)Protestant cultures. I then show how an ethnographic approach focused on the specific contexts in which piety or belief in God is othered can deepen understanding of the heterogeneous formations of ‘nonreligion’, even within relatively well-researched settings such as contemporary London.
