La(ky and Bonnie Brennen For Better or For Worse: Coming Out in the Funny Pages Among the most significant occasions in the lives of gay men and lesbians is the one in which they realize that their sexual orientation situates them as "other." One aspect of this process, known as coming out, is the self-acknowledgement ofbeing gay or lesbian, while another aspect consists of revealing this identity to family members and friends. During her 1980s fieldwork with lesbians and gay men in San Francisco, anthropologist Kath Weston observed that "no other topic generated an emotional response comparable to coming out to blood (or adoptive) relatives" (1991, 43). She wrote: When discussion turned to the subject of straight family, it was not unusual for interviews to be interrupted by tears, rage, or a lengthy silence. "Are you out to your parents?" and "Are you out to your family?" were questions that almost inevitably arose in the process of getting to know another lesbian or gay person. ( 43) In Spring of 1993, such a "coming out" process was played out in North American newspapers through Canadian artist Lynn Johnston's syndicated comic strip, For Better or For Worse.

At the time, her mother, J.J., was a performance artist/taxi driver, and her father Mike Doonesbury was a chronically underemployed advertising “consultant.” In her early years, Alex was cared for by nanny Zonker Harris, with few apparent side effects. When her parents split up Alex and her father settled in Seattle, where she attended great public schools and became a seriously competent hacker before she reached puberty. She played a key role in successfully bringing the Boomer and Gen-X worlds together, represented by her father and coder extraordinaire Kim Rosenthal. Throughout the dotcom boom the three played hardball with software, searching for the Killer App. In the post-bubble world they now run myVulture.com, for whom Alex aggressively acquires the intellectual assets of failed dotcoms. In her spare time Alex maintains the phenomenally successful Alex-cam web site, and issues tickets to SUV’s for “violating the public good.” She has serious issues with her father over file-sharing, which he deplores.     Dear Reader, My first exposure to Atlanta’s literary scene began during my first year of college, with the Agnes Scott Writers’ Festival. This event quickly became something I eagerly looked forward to each year. Now, as a senior, I am excited to be involved in the planning and promotion of such an event. Each festival brings life-changing writers and books that I now cannot imagine not knowing; I have no doubt that this year’s lineup, featuring Richard Blanco, Dani Shapiro, and Charleen McClure ’10, will be no different. The Writers’ Festival, now in its 45th year, is a time where fellow lovers of literature come together to celebrate the work of both emerging and well-established writers, to gain insight and ask questions about other writers’ interests and creative processes, and to receive the push to breathe life into our own projects waiting to be acknowledged. Invented in the 1440s, Johannes Gutenberg’s printing press helped progress the spread of books and knowledge to the greater public during the European Renaissance. It for this reason that the printing press is a central theme for this year’s celebration. The writers featured in the magazine this year each function as an unique piece of type in our festival’s printing press. Whether writers of poetry, fiction, drama, or nonfiction, each has something to say, their imprint to make on the world. Read these, and after you are done, take a moment to reflect on them as a whole. What do each come together to say about the experiences, values, and concerns of 2016? I hope you will enjoy the following works and, of course, the festival events as much as we do.
