Jerusalem: City of Dreams, City of Sorrows
1 JERUSALEM: CITY OF DREAMS, CITY OF SORROWS More than ever before, urban historians tell us that global cities tend to look very much alike. For U.S. students. the“ look alike” perspective makes it more difficult to empathize with and to understand cultures and societies other than their own. The admittedly superficial similarities of global cities with U.S. ones leads to misunderstandings and confusion. The multiplicity of cybercafés, high-rise buildings, bars and discothèques, international hotels, restaurants, and boutique retailers in shopping malls and multiplex cinemas gives these global cities the appearances of familiarity. The ubiquity of schools, university campuses, signs, streetlights, and urban transportation systems can only add to an outsider’s “cultural and social blindness.” Prevailing U.S. learning goals that underscore American values of individualism, self-confidence, and material comfort are, more often than not, obstacles for any quick study or understanding of world cultures and societies by visiting U.S. student and faculty.1 Therefore, international educators need to look for and find ways in which their students are able to look beyond the veneer of the modern global city through careful program planning and learning strategies that seek to affect the students in their “reading and learning” about these fertile centers of liberal learning. As the students become acquainted with the streets, neighborhoods, and urban centers of their global city, their understanding of its ways and habits is embellished and enriched by the walls, neighborhoods, institutions, and archaeological sites that might otherwise cause them their “cultural and social blindness.” Jerusalem is more than an intriguing global historical city. -
Armenian Christians in Jerusalem: 1700 Years of Peaceful Presence*

This historical account sheds the light on the importance of Jerusa- lem for the Armenians, especially for the Armenian Church that was granted the authority to safeguard the Holy Places in the Holy Land with the Greek and Latin Churches. During the centuries, the Armenians survived all the conquests and were able to find all sorts of compromises with all the different powers that conquered Jerusalem. This study shows that the permanent presence is due to the wise religious authorities and the entire Armenian community who had no backing from super powers but they had their religious beliefs and their per- sistence in safeguarding the Holy Places of Christianity. The author takes the reader back in History by stopping at important events that shaped the history of the Armenians in the Holy Land. Key words: Jerusalem, Armenians, Crusaders, Holy Land, St James Monas- tery, Old City, Armenian Quarter. Introduction This paper comes at a time when Christians in Iraq and Egypt are being mas- sacred in their churches, Christians in Nazareth are being forbidden to decorate a Christmas tree in public space, and Christians in Lebanon are seeking to pre- serve their political rights to safeguard their presence in their Homeland. At a time, when the Palestinian Authority is alerting the International Community of the danger of the continuous and ferocious settlement construction in East Jerusalem by the State of Israel, and at a time when Christians of the East are being silent on the fate of Jerusalem by leaving it in the hands of the Palestinian and Israeli negotiators, hoping that the Unites States will be the caretaker of the Christians of Jerusalem. -

JERUSALEMJERUSALEM The issue of Jerusalem have constituted, both in the far and near past, a basic pivot in determining the future and realities of the surrounding region. The POPULATION & URBANIZATION special importance of conducting a study on the Jerusalem issue rises from the current attempts to define the future of the region in the context of the ongoing political process and the accompanying conflicts, which are in some cases bloody and in other cases peaceful. Because of the importance of Jerusalem for both the Arab Palestinian side and the Zionist Jewish side, the From 1850 - 2000 determination of the future of the region, whether in terms of war or peace, depends on the method in which the issue is dealt with. The Zionist Movement has attempted from the start of its emigration to Palestine to impose new realities in order to decide the issue of Jerusalem for its benefit. The attempts were not restricted to physical realities, but included the creation of an impression and conviction through media and lots of books and publications that worked on forging the past and present history of the city, thus concealing the reality and truth behind a curtain of false propaganda and history forging. Thus, this contribution from the Jerusalem Media and Communications Center came to highlight the events that took place during the historical epoch between 1850 and 2000. We do hope that we can succeed in raising discussion over this issue and highlight the facts and truth and encourage others inside Palestine and abroad to contribute in this discussion and enrich this attempt towards reinforcing a conviction that any solution that does not guarantee the historical, political, national and religious rights of the Arab Palestinian people in Jerusalem will never be a just, comprehensive and permanent solution. -

3 From Destruction to Preservation When Theodor Herzl, the founder of political Zionism, visited Jerusalem in 1898, he was repelled by “the musty deposits of two thousand years of inhumanity, intol- erance and foulness” in the “reeking alleys” of the Old City. He vowed that the first thing the Zionists would do when they got control of Jerusalem would be to tear most of it down, building an “airy, comfortable, properly sewered, new city around the holy places.”1 Similarly, when East Jerusalem and the Old City were captured by Israel in 1967, David Ben-Gurion (the founder of the State of Israel and the first prime minister of the country), then a member of Knesset, called for the demoli- tion of the walls of Jerusalem because they were not Jewish and thus threatened to disrupt the visual continuity of Israeli control.2 Though neither Herzl’s nor Ben Gurion’s vision or goal was realized, massive and deliberate destructions of material legacies occurred following the UN Parti- tion Plan of 1947. During the period of Jordanian rule of the Old City and East Jerusalem between 1948 and 1967, numerous synagogues and other Jewish institu- tions, particularly in the Jewish Quarter, were abandoned, neglected, or demol- ished.3 Then, in June 1967, immediately following the armistice that concluded the Arab-Israeli War, all inhabitants of the Mughrabi Quarter near the Western Wall were evacuated, and the historic district was razed to create room for a wide, open plaza that would be joined to the Jewish Quarter.4 Additional destruction occurred throughout the Jewish Quarter. -

Plans 166249 and 166256 Residential Blocks are deposited at the Regional Committee. A professional summary of the research done has been published. Scheme 11053 - The Liba (core) House is now awaiting validation. Scheme 62950 - Tifferet Israel received statutory validation. Scheme 193482 for an addition to an existing residential building has been objected by the Local Planning. Scheme 105536 for the expansion of an existing housing unit has been submitted (2014). Scheme 188995 for approving a building deviation in an existing residential unit is being discussed before deposition at the Regional Planning Committee. Scheme 201657 for the enlargement of an existing residential unit has been submitted (2014). Scheme 246777 for replacing a residential unit which has been destroyed was filed. Scheme 152215 for a new residential unit has been filed. Scheme 171645 for the addition of 200 sqm built space has been filed. Development The extensive work along Hagai (El Wad) Street is ending. In 2015, a special pilot was carried out on Via Dolorsa to achieve easier travel than on pavement. At The Christian Quarter a detailed plan has been prepared for the Muristan plaza.
