Each session began with a keynote from author Sam Quinones and ended with a presentation by Dr. Meghan Harper on Libraries Lending Hope. A panel of local librarians discussing how the opioid crisis has impacted their library or library service and a presentation from a local Project DAWN representative rounded out the day. Nearly 400 library staff from all types of libraries participated in the event. Displays & Exhibits • WWI exhibit is on display in the Map Room at the Ohio Statehouse with posters, federal and state documents, photos, and reproductions • The WWI exhibit at State Library continues to feature: o Reports, pamphlets, handbooks, newsletters and more from the State Library’s federal and state collections o Digitized propaganda posters printed on canvas from several digital libraries collections including Ohio Memory (courtesy of Ohio History Connection) and Library of Congress o Books from the State Library collection o A digital slide show highlighting online resources, eBooks, and audiobooks [continued on next page] The vision of the State Library of Ohio is a Smarter Ohio where every Ohioan can access the necessary resources to be engaged citizens, excel at their jobs, participate in the workforce, and pursue their passions and interests. www.library.ohio.gov 274 East First Avenue · Columbus · Ohio · 43201 614-644-7061 • Centennial Exhibition of 1876 through August 30th o Displays featured items related to Ohio and the Centennial Exhibition of 1876, also known as the International Exhibition of Arts, Manufactures and Products of the Soil and Mine. It was the first official World's Fair in the United States. Held in Philadelphia from May 10 to November 10, 1876, the location also commemorated the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Government Publishing Office • Kirstin Krumsee accompanied staff from the Government Publishing Office on site visits August 20 – 24. Libraries visited included: Cleveland Public Library, Cleveland State University Law Library, Youngstown State University Library, Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, University of Mount Union Library, Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County, Kent State University – Tuscarawas Library, and Muskingum University Library. LSTA • Open grants were awarded to Louisville City Schools and Ashtabula County District Library. • Libraries may apply for an Open Grant at any time. Information on Open Grants can be found at: https://library.ohio.gov/services-for-libraries/lsta-grants/#AvailableGrants. • LSTA funds are now available to support Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) and Gatekeeper training in public libraries. Under this special grant program, public libraries may apply for up to $4,999 for a National Council of Behavioral Health Certified Instructor to provide training to staff and/or community organizations. More information and the RFP can be found at: https://library.ohio.gov/documents/mental-health-first-aid-rfp/. • In 2016, The State Library of Ohio announced the availability of LSTA funds to support Celebrating Ohio Book Awards & Authors (COBAA), in an effort to provide funds specifically for collection development purposes. The State Library is pleased to announce that this year, in its third iteration, the grant award has been increased to a maximum of $1,500 per eligible institution. COBAA grant proposals are due at 11:59 pm, October 31, 2018. • Thirteen applications for competitive grants were received at the State Library by the due date of August 31. Proposals will now be distributed to reviewers, and recommended projects will be taken to the December State Library Board meeting for approval. Proposals will now be reviewed by State Library staff and members of the Ohio Preservation Council. Funded projects will begin November 1. • Automation proposals that will allow a public library currently on a stand-alone ILS to migrate and join a consortium are still being accepted. A packet containing the RFP and a list of ILS consortia accepting new members was sent last summer to public library directors currently using a stand-alone ILS. Applications may be submitted at any time, and recommended proposals will be taken to the State Library Board for approval at the next available meeting. • Ohio’s IMLS Program Officer, Madison Bolls, visited Ohio August 27 – 31. She reviewed files at the State Library, talked with State Library staff, and visited the following libraries which have recently received LSTA funds: Ohio History Connection, Westerville Public Library, Otterbein University, Upper Arlington Public Library, Willowick Branch (Willougby-Eastlake Public Library), Ohio Library for the Blind and Physically Disabled, Heights Library, Cuyahoga Falls Public Library, Louisville Public Library Sensory Strategies Space, and Perry Cook Memorial Public Library. • Questions on the LSTA program should be addressed to Cindy Boyden, [email protected]. Ohio Digital Network [Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) Project] • After the June harvest, over 99,000 records from the Ohio Digital Network hub are now published on DPLA's website. The next harvest is scheduled for September. • Fourteen institutions from across Ohio have published records on DPLA. • With a grant from DPLA and the Knight foundation, ODN worked with a design agency to create a website and logo. The website was launched on July 30, 2018. • Penelope Shumaker spoke on the Preparing Metadata for DPLA Panel with CONTENTdm at the CONTENTdm User Group meeting on August 2, 2018. • Penelope Shumaker presented on how to use DPLA for Columbus Metropolitan Library staff on August 20, 2018. • Jen Johnson and Penelope Shumaker are available to speak to cultural heritage institutions about DPLA and ODN. Ohio Ready to Read • Registration remains open for fall Early Literacy 101 workshops. This free, content-rich, one-day workshop emphasizes hands-on activities and easy-to-implement takeaways for storytimes and patron interactions. Seats are available for these workshops: Tuesday, Sept. 11 at the Brown County Public Library; Friday, Oct. 19 at the Chillicothe-Ross County Public Library; and Thursday, Nov. 8 at the Clermont County Public Library. Any Ohio library worker may register and attend. See www.ohreadytoread.org/early-literacy-101 for more information and registration links. • Registration is also open for fall Digital Media Literacy Training workshops in Cleveland on Friday, Sept. 7 and Cincinnati on Thursday, Oct. 25. The workshop in Worthington is full. This free, one-day workshop will equip children’s services staff in public and school libraries to confidently assist parents and caregivers as they navigate the digital world. Ohio Talking Book Program • Registration is now available online for the Ohio Talking Book Program Sublending Agency Training on Wednesday, September 26, 2018 at the State Library of Ohio. Click here to register for the training. o The free training will be held from 10:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. in the Boardroom of the State Library of Ohio. Lunch will be provided, and parking is free at the State Library.
