Since the foundation of the uc beylik at the fourteenth century, these relations were already based on the mutual interests; however after the appearance of new actors and threats their nature changed significantly. The present study tries to understand especially the period of transformations in the relations between the Ottomans and the heterodox Kalenderî dervishes happened after the appearance of the Safavî State hence late fifteenth and early sixteenth century. It focuses on the idea that following the success of the Safavî propaganda the Ottomans needed an intermediary agent to reach out the heterodox Turcomans and they found it in the dervish tekkes. The regulations in the tekke of iii Hadji Bektash and its reflections on the other Kalenderî tekkes are therefore very important to analyze in details. These transformations will be analyzed through Abdal Musa Tekke of Elmal, Antalya. Abdal Musa appeared as a Kalenderî dervish transformed into a Bektashi sheikh and his tekke was connected directly to the central Hadji Bektash Tekke is one of the significant examples of this State policy against the Turcoman tribes and their heterodox dervishes. • The Arsenite Schism and the Babai Rebellion: Two Case Studies
THE ARSENITE SCHISM AND THE BABAI REBELLION: TWO CASE STUDIES IN CENTER-PERIPHERY RELATIONS by Hüsamettin ŞİMŞİR Submitted to the Institute of Social Sciences in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in History Sabancı University June 2018 © Hüsamettin Şimşir 2018 All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT THE ARSENITE SCHISM AND THE BABAI REBELLION: TWO CASE STUDIES IN CENTER-PERIPHERY RELATIONS Hüsamettin Şimşir M.A Thesis, June 2018 Thesis Supervisor: Dr. Fac. Member Ferenc Péter Csirkés This thesis aims to present an analysis of the interaction between Christians and Muslims in the west of Asia Minor at the end of the 13th and the beginning of the 14th centuries after two religious-social movements in the Byzantine and the Rum Seljuk Empires, the Arsenite Schism and the Babai Rebellion. After the unsuccessful rebellion of the Babais, antinomian dervishes who had migrated to the west of Asia Minor because of a heavy oppression as well as inquisition by the state and had a different religious belief apart from the mainstream religious understanding of the center initiated missionary activities in the regions along the Byzantine border. Accordingly, these dervishes had joined the military activities of the Turcoman chieftains against the Byzantines and interacted with the local Christian population and religious figures. As a result of this religious interaction, messianic and ascetic beliefs were increasingly present among the Greek-speaking population as well as spiritual leaders of western Anatolia. Since such interfaith and cross- cultural interaction had a considerable impact on the course of all these events, this thesis focuses on them to create a better understanding of the appearance of the Hesychasm in the Byzantine spiritual environment in the later period.

They have shown that humans will always be interested in dimension of faith, belief, and religion, and established that there is a crucial relationship between the holistic signification and the social institution. At the same time, they have laid out the various reasons why the religion is important for people, such as the way it enables a form of social solidarity among people to add meanings to human life and uncertainty (suffering, death, secret, and illness). For all human progress, the embodiments of religion and faith and the process of discovery are related to collective cultural structuring, social representation, and cultural function.(1) The purpose of anthropology is to investigate people, social relations, and social structure, so faith is one of the most fascinating subjects for anthropologists. Atay mentions that religious anthropology explores religiosity, religious motives and practices that have been formed to represent the way of life and culture rather than their religious contents and sacred/divine sources.(2) Therefore anthropologists have researched the dialectic relationship This is a revised edition of the paper presented as “Ocak in the Globalizing Alevism: An Anthropological Analysis on Dedelik-Seyitlik,” at the 1st International Symposium of Alevism from Past to Present, Bingöl University,Turkey, October 3-5, 2013.

  • Sufism and Tariqas Facing the State: Their Influence on Politics in the Sudan
Sufism and Tariqas Facing the State Sufism and Tariqas Facing the State: Their Influence on Politics in the Sudan Daisuke MARUYAMA* This study focuses on the political influence of Sufism and tariqas in the Sudan. Previous studies have emphasized the political influences of Sufi shaykhs and tariqas on Sudan’s history and demonstrated why and how Sufis and tariqas have exercised their political influence over time; however, the problem is that these researches are largely limited to only two particular religious orders, the Khatmµya order and the An≠±r, that have their own political parties. Therefore, this study stresses on the political importance of Sufis and tariqas without their own political parties and aims to reveal their presence in present Sudanese politics, with special references to the strategies and activities of the government and the remarks of Sufis at meetings held by several tariqas during the national election campaign in 2010. In order to reveal the influences of Sufism and tariqas without their own political parties in Sudanese politics, this study introduces four sections. The first section traces the historical transition of the political influences of Sufism and tariqa from the rudiment until the present Islamist government. The second section introduces the thoughts of Islamists toward Sufism in the Islamic Movement (al-≈araka al-Isl±mµya) such as the introduction of new terminology ahl al-dhikr (people that remember [All±h]), which accentuates the political attitude toward Sufism, and the third section deals with the policies and activities of the present government with regard to Sufism and tariqas, such as the foundation of the committee for Sufis and tariqas.

While tarîqa actually means the Spiritual Path, the progress of the mystics on the way to Unity with Allah, the same word is used to describe the organizational form, the way of companionship, of these mystics. The scholarly literature on the turuq, i.e. the Sufi orders, has frequently differentiated between the two meanings, assuming that throughout the history of Sufism the original signification and content of tarîqa has dissipated, leaving way for the turuq, as if one passed from a pure spiritual dimension to a more social reality. In opposition to this view, I would argue that the turuq institution is inseparable from the tarîqa ideal, in other words that the worldly, temporal form of Sufism is intimately linked to its esoteric, spiritual substance. Moreover, this fundamental ambiguity — which may appear as a consistent feature — proves to be a main as well as indispensable element of the Sufi orders in general.

  • Inançoğlu Murad Arslan Bey'in Sikkeleri
İNANÇOĞLU MURAD ARSLAN BEY’İN SİKKELERİ Kamil Eron1 Gültekin Teoman2 Anadolu beylikleri sikkeleri içinde en az bilgiye sahip olduğumuz, hakkında en az yazılı kaynak olan sikkelerden biri de İnanç oğulları sikkeleridir. Bu makalede sizlere Murad Arslan Bey’in 18 adet sikkesini tanıtacağız. Sikkeleri tanıtmaya geçmeden önce kısaca İnanç oğulları tarihçesinden bahsetmek istiyoruz. On üçüncü ve on dördüncü asırlarda, Lâdik’te (Denizli) hüküm süren Türk beyliklerinden birisidir. Bunun üzerine Hülâgu, Mehmed Bey'in damadı Ali'yi, beyliği vermek vaadiyle kendi tarafına çekmesini bildi. Onun ihanetiyle de Mehmed Bey mağlup edilerek yakalandı ve öldürüldü. Before long, however, he began publicly teaching a form of primarily Chishti Sufism. The next seventeen years of his life would be spent crisscrossing the Western world giving lectures to thousands of Europeans and Americans in an attempt to spread this philosophical message. This message shifted over those first seventeen years and the subsequent century from one that heavily emphasized specifically Sufi elements of teaching and philosophy to a religious message that placed heavy emphasis on the universal elements that it considered to be the core of all religions. This philosophy is most readily observable and easily understood by studying its current iteration, the Inayattiya, who developed out of a number of schisms and splits in the mid twentieth century and trace their silsila, or spiritual lineage, back to HIK by way of his siblings and cousins, to his son Pir Vilayat Inayat-Khan, and his grandson, the current head, of the Order Pir Zia Inayat-Khan.
