Contact: [email protected] Choutouts: Language contact and US-Latin hip hop on YouTube Matt Garley This paper presents a corpus-sociolinguistic analysis of lyrics and com- ments from videos for four US-Latinx hip hop songs on YouTube. A ‘post-varieties’ (Seargeant and Tagg 2011) analysis of the diversity and hybridity of linguistic production in the YouTube comments finds the notions of codemeshing and plurilingualism (Canagarajah 2009) useful in characterizing the language practices of the Chicanx community of the Southwestern US, while a focus on the linguistic practices of com- menters on Northeastern ‘core’ artists’ tracks validate the use of named language varieties in examining language attitudes and ideologies as they emerge in commenters’ discussions. Finally, this article advances the sociolinguistics of orthography (Sebba 2007) by examining the social meanings of a vast array of creative and novel orthographic forms, which often blur the supposed lines between language varieties. Keywords: Latinx, hip hop, orthography, codemeshing, language contact, language attitudes, language ideologies, computer-mediated discourse. Choutouts: contacto lingüístico y el hip hop latinx-estadounidense en YouTube. Este estudio presenta un análisis sociolingüístico de letras de canciones y comentarios de cuatro videos de hip hop latinx-esta- dounidenses en YouTube.

Korean American Creations and Discontents: Korean American Cultural Productions, Los Angeles, and Post-1992 A Dissertation SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA BY Michelle Chang IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Josephine Lee, Co-Advisor Elliott Powell, Co-Advisor December 2020 © Michelle Chang 2020 i Acknowledgements As I write the last section of my dissertation, I find myself at a loss for words. 55,000+ words later and my writing fails me. While the dissertation itself is an overwhelming feat, this acknowledgements section feels equally heavy. Expressing my gratitude and thanks for every person who has made this possiBle feels quite impossiBle. And as someone who once detested both school and writing, there’s a lot of people I am thankful for. It is a fact that I could not completed a PhD, let alone a dissertation, on my own. Graduate school wears you down, and especially one framed By the 2016 presidential election and 2020 uprisings, rise of white supremacy, and a gloBal pandemic, graduate school is really hard and writing is the last thing you want to do. While I’ve spent days going through mental lists of people and groups who’ve helped me, this is not a complete list and my sincere apologies to anyone I’ve forgotten. First and foremost, this dissertation would not be where it is today without the guidance and support of my advisors Jo Lee and Elliott Powell. The hours of advice and words of wisdom I received from you both not only shaped my project and affirmed its direction, but they also reminded me of the realistic expectations we should have for ourselves.

news #34 MUNGOLIAN JETSET - MUNGODELICS Hot on the heels of 2011`s "Schlungs", the Jetsetters have kept those buttons busily pushed, and are already here with their next chapter installment, featuring 8 new nuggets entitled "Mungodelics". The album is essentially a psychodramatic sequel to the highly acclaimed "We Gave It All Away, Now We Are Taking It Back" album of 2009, as it is musically a blend of originals and remakes made into originals, as well as solo performances and external collaborations from the band`s musical core members, Knut Saevik and Paul "Strangefruit" Nyhus. All in all, "Mungodelics" musically summons everything that is hazy, dazy, underearthly and crazy. This is the Mungolian Jetset taking you on a ride through the seasons, and shifts of the days and nights, from the Cantina to the Ewok forest, via ritualistic dancing at Kilmin Taboour and stellar swimming in the galactic Goa.
