28 Tohari's Women the Depiction of Banyumas
Proceedings TOHARI'S WOMEN THE DEPICTION OF BANYUMAS WOMEN IN AHMAD TOHARI'S LITERARY WORKS Dhenok Praptiningrum Institut Teknologi Telkom Purwokerto, Purwokerto [email protected] Abstract: As part of Javanese culture, Banyumas actually has its particular Javanese social and cultural characteristics. The social structure and culture, especially related to the position and the definition of women, are reflected in Ahmad Tohari's literary works. In some of his literary works such as Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk (The Dancer) and Bekisar Merah (The Red Bekisar) Tohari even portraits Banyumas women as the main characters of the novel. Both in Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk and Bekisar Merah, the women characthers depicted in figure of strong and powerful women. Meanwhile, Lingkar Tanah Air and Kubah portrait women characters almost in the opposite figure of piety and submissive women. Thus, this paper would analyze the depiction of Banyumas women in Tohari's four novels to provide specific descriptions of Banyumas women archetype from the perspectives of religious life, the role in a family, and the role as a woman in a society. Keywords: Banyumas women, Ahmad Tohari, women depiction, women archetype, Indonesian literature INTRODUCTION There have been various kind of studies about Javanese culture and Indonesian literary works. However, the studies mainly focus on the idea of Javanese in general that build the idea of Javanese culture, especially women archetype, as particular one kind of Javanese idea. As part of Javanese culture, Banyumas is geographically located in Central Java, in fact has its own specific Javanese culture, value, even accents. Thus, this study focuses on the idea of Banyumas culture reflected in three novels written by Ahmad Tohari, Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk – The Dancer (1982), Bekisar Merah – The Red Bekisar (1993), and Kubah – The Dome (1980). -

McGinn Since 1998, Ayu Utami has become prominent as one of the female authors who have successfully voiced their perspectives on social issues that were once considered taboo. Her three novels, Saman, Larung, and Bilangan Fu, Utami’s have praised both nationally and internationally. As a writer and social critic, she particularly focuses on three Indonesian social cancers, those related to power, sexuality, and religion. Utami’s characters personify the tragic flaw of modern people who are trapped between the need to struggle for their own personal beliefs and the different pressures placed on them by the nation, traditional concepts and modernism, patriarchal society and women’s desires for greater freedom. Through her male characters (namely Saman, Larung, Yuda, and Parang Jati), Utami portrays how modern men face the clash between their beliefs about religion and the government. -

The Reformasi of Ayu Utami
PB Wacana Vol. 15 No. 2 (2014) KarelWacana Steenbrink Vol. 15, TheNo. “reformasi“2 (2014): 351–366 of Ayu Utami 351 The reformasi of Ayu Utami Attacking the monopoly of the great religions Karel Steenbrink Abstract In eight novels, Ayu Utami has presented critical attacks on doctrines and practices of the major religions in Indonesia. The two books, that describe the spiritual struggle of the Catholic priest Saman (1998–2002), call for a religion that is more active in the political arena, but leaves sexual rules to the individual people. The novel Bilangan Fu (2008) condemns the monopoly of the great religions in favour of local and individual spirituality. This is developed in a series of novels of which two more have already appeared. A third cycle of three more or less autobiographic novels (2003–2013) sketch her personal quest from atheism towards a critical but positive spirituality condemning a clerical and monopolist trend in Catholicism. Utami’s criticism of the great religions is external (more players in the field should be recognized) and internal (religious leaders should have more modest claims towards their faithful and leave more space for personal choice). Keywords Ayu Utami, modern Indonesian literature, feminism, religious pluralism, Javanese traditions, Catholicism. In the description of Javanese culture by the author of the Negarakertagama (ca 1365) a plurality of religious traditions is presented. Various different and sometimes competing variants of Buddhism and Hinduism lived side by side. Lay people, including the ruler, were the “clients” of the specialists, pandita and bikkhu. The population could seek their fortune and approach their favourites at a large number of shrines, and Javanese authors could easily mix Hindu and Buddhist ideas in one writing, even mix it with local Javanese lore. -

Not unnoticed has been their common use of sex and sexuality as a prominent component of their writings. Many of the authors have been labelled with the term sastrawangi1; a friendly but patronizing and slightly derogatory label. The following critique illuminates the more important but previously un-investigated facets of literature from this generation of authors and brings to light the works of some authors that, due to the authors‟ avoidance of sex and sexuality, have been overlooked as subjects of criticism. -

As with many post-colonial countries, Indonesia has suffered from a long conflict between the military forces and civil society since its independence in 1945. This struggle is reflected in a novel entitled The Dancer written by Ahmad Tohari during the Suharto era and its film adaptation with the same title by Ifa Isfansyah in the post-Suharto era. Using the political theory of depoliticisa- tion, I argue that the adaptation represents the spirit of repoliticisation of the early post-Soeharto Indonesia while concurrently offering a distinctive type of depoliticisation typical of the current era. Not only does the study try to shift attention from Anglo-American and Commonwealth film adap- tations, but it also offers an alternative to the homogenising discourse of the Centre (the West) and Periphery (the East) and its derivative post-colonial adaptation theories. -
