HTC Engineering Center located at the University of • CO2 Enhanced Oil Recovery technical expertise Regina in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada and close proximity to the Weyburn EOR field. • Laboratories for Solvent development, material • Doosan, HTC and the UoR has a long term technology investment programme in place. Funded by the partners and Canadian Government Page 9 INTERNATIONAL TEST CENTER (ITC) AT THE UNIVERSITY OF REGINA • Started-up in 2005 • State of the art facility, specifically designed to research and develop process technology using advanced amine solvents for post- combustion carbon capture • Pilot plant sized to capture 1 TPD using NG fuel – Ability to introduce contaminants • Facilitates screening and testing of advanced solvents and process flow schemes • Heavily instrumented to provide accurate data that supports model validation • Includes equipment to study other phenomena, including: – Solvent corrosion mechanisms and material selection – Solvent degradation mechanisms – Absorption/desorption kinetics Page 10 IMPORTANCE OF MODELING TOOLS, VALIDATION SCALE-UP & PROCESS OPTIMSATION • No single, commercially available software package on its own will allow for the proper design of a post-combustion carbon capture plant • HTC utilizes no less than 3 industry-leading modeling packages, in addition to its own internal modeling program for every plant design • All modeling has been validated against actual operating data • Scale-up has been validated against actual operating data from several operations in capacities as large as 800 TPD (with +/- 3% accuracy) • Most importantly, scale-up is only achievable through a complete and thorough understanding of: – All physical and chemical properties (kinetics, diffusivity, etc.) – Operating conditions – Proper application of numeric modeling tools • Process Patents in place for high efficiency configured to advanced solvent Optimized Process Design (TKO™) • Heat Integration • Reduction in Steam Page 11 ENERGY PENALTY REDUCTION Post Combustion capture process requires considerable energy to operate and to regenerate the solvent to strip out the captured CO2. To minimise this energy penalty our process offers two key technologies: • RS2™ advanced formulated solvent – Developed to allow enhanced capture capability of the CO2 within the absorber column but also improved release levels requiring less steam. • Thermal Kinetic Optimisation (TKO™) - Improves CO2 Capture through heat recovery, thermal balancing and optimized process flow. Primary advantage of this patented system is the reduction of the power plant steam requirement. This process has shown to reduce steam consumption by up to 30% compared to some other existing commercial technologies. Page 12 SOLVENT DEGRADATION Gas treating solvents used within the post combustion process break down as a result of exposure and repeated use. Formation of degradation products will result in a loss of capacity and give rise to a number of operating problems including corrosion and foaming. To help minimise solvent degradation and to reduce its effects our process incorporates several key features: • RS2™ advanced formulated solvent – One key development of the solvent was its process stability and low degradation properties. Confirmed at a recent 1400 hour test at the University of Regina’s Boundary Dam test facility. • Reclaimer – A reclaimer is fitted which acts as a filter to remove the heat stable salts. By removing these salts several of the degradation issues are removed such as capacity limiting etc. • Solvent Regeneration – Integrated smart control system, constantly analysing the solvent and adjusting it’s make up for optimised performance. • Foaming – Incorporated is an automatic anti-foaming system. Constantly monitoring the solvent and injecting anti-foaming agents as and when required.
