Although gaining increasing academic attention, the supply-side perspective of dark tourism is poorly understood with scarce empirical evidence relating to management operations and practices. This may be due to management operations and practices that are perceived to conflict with the sensitive themes of visitor sites associated with dark tourism. Particular consideration is given to the management concept of innovation identified as a significant gap for scholarly exploration. Qualitative semi-structured interviews were carried out with senior management at 23 sites and attractions across the United Kingdom associated with dark tourism. The findings reveal that, contrary to suggestions that dark tourism sites may be restrictive in management practices, a wide array of innovative activities and marketing practices are widely conducted and innovation was viewed as a stimuli for repeat visitation. Furthermore, management operations are viewed as facilitating important stories of trauma for present and future generations. Omission of these stories would belittle the tragic circumstances in which people associated with the sites had died or suffered. Moreover, managers at dark tourism sites acknowledged the ethical and moral tensions surrounding management practices at dark tourism sites. Indeed, the majority of managers adopted both highly ethical processes resulting in ethical innovations and complex consultation processes in order to mitigate any potential concerns from stakeholders. The ethical stance underpinning operations positions the phenomenon of dark tourism as a subset within the tourism sector, distinct from its counterparts.     DOSSIER The concentration camp as a site of ‘dark tourism’ SARAH HODGKINSON University of Leicester, England n the years following the end of World War II there was already some demand among the survivors, the relatives of victims, and the interested public to visit the sites of the atrocities committed in concentration, forced labour and extermination camps1. Some of these camps were made open to the public just a few years after their liberation. Auschwitz was opened as a site of remembrance I as early as 1947, although this raised considerable controversy with calls to destroy the site completely being made in 19482. Other sites only became publically accessible decades later as they were put to other uses. For example Dachau was used to imprison members of the SS leading up to the Dachau trials and then became a ‘displaced persons’ camp run by the Bavarian government until it was opened as a memorial site in 1965. Sachenhausen was used as a ‘NKVD special camp’ by the Soviet Union until 1950. From 1961 they opened a small portion of the site as a memorial, focusing on ‘resistance to Fascism’ until the end of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) in 1990. It opened again to the public in its present form in 1993. Other camps were completely destroyed by the Nazis, and the site later marked with a simple memorial (e.g. Treblinka). But for those camps that remained, there has always been an element of curiosity and tourism with reports from as early as the 1950s noting those who come to take photographs of the chimneys at Auschwitz, for example3.

A STUDY OF PRECARIOUS EMPATHY AND PERFORMANCE AT #AUSCHWITZ Tess Scholfield-Peters | University of Technology Sydney ABSTRACT This article explores the notion of empathy through the contemporary lens of social media performativity relating to ‘dark tourism’. Examining Auschwitz as a case study, the article explores the post-Holocaust idea that often this empathy is precarious and accompanied by performed authenticity. Through analysis, this article focuses on concepts of ‘dark tourism’, vicarious victimhood, conspicuous compassion, and self- representation, all portrayed through Instagram. It argues that ‘pilgrimages’ to dark sites of trauma act not only as memorialisation but as spaces of self-validation and representation. In the contemporary Western world, the distinction between ‘authentic’ empathy and conspicuous, socially informed performance is blurred as a result of digitisation and increased pressure on the individual to form empathic connections and then post about it online. Stone SUMMARY Deaths, disasters and atrocities in touristic form are becoming an increasingly pervasive feature within the contemporary tourism landscape, and as such, are ever more providing potential spiritual journeys for the tourist who wishes to gaze upon real and recreated death. As a result, the rather emotive label of 'dark tourism' has entered academic discourse and media parlance, and consequently has generated a significant amount of research interest. However, despite this increasing attention the dark tourism literature remains both eclectic and theoretically fragile. That is, a number of fundamental issues remain, not least whether it is actually possible or justifiable to collectively categorise a diverse range of sites, attractions and exhibitions that are associated with death and the macabre as 'dark tourism', or whether identifiable degrees or 'shades' of darkness can be attributed to a particular type of dark tourism supplier. This paper argues that certain suppliers may indeed, conceptually at least, share particular product features, perceptions and characteristics, which can then be loosely translated into various 'shades of darkness'. As a result, dark tourism products may lie along a rather 'fluid and dynamic spectrum of intensity', whereby particular sites may be conceivably 'darker' than others, dependant upon various defining characteristics, perceptions and product traits. It is proposed that construction of a firm and comprehensive typological foundation will lead not only to a better understanding of dark tourism supply, but also, and perhaps more importantly, lead to a better understanding of where to locate and explore consumer demand, motivations and experiences.

Following contextual explorations of the role of two of the most dominant symbols to have emerged within the field of Holocaust education since the establishment of the National Curriculum, the Holocaust survivor and Auschwitz-Birkenau, this study closely analyses the way in which each of these Holocaust icons has been represented and utilised within educational programmes promoted by the Holocaust Educational Trust. It is shown that the educational representations of these symbols contribute to the domestication of Holocaust consciousness within a British narrative, reinforcing positive interpretations of British national identity and the benefits of liberal democracy whilst, simultaneously, distancing the crimes committed during the Holocaust from the British public through representing these acts as the very antithesis of what is deemed to be British. Through such analysis it is demonstrated that Holocaust education, as it exists in Britain today, reflects the British context in which it has evolved whilst illustrating how it has also fundamentally been shaped by this same context.

Some of these camps were made open to the public just a few years after their liberation. Auschwitz was opened as a site of remembrance I as early as 1947, although this raised considerable controversy with calls to destroy the site completely being made in 19482. Other sites only became publically accessible decades later as they were put to other uses.
