The seroepidemiological condition of malaria in three main districts of Hormozgan Province, a low transmission area in southeast of Iran, was investigated. Methods. Sera samples (803) were collected from healthy volunteers from the three main districts (Bandar Lengeh in the west, Bandar Abbas in the center, and Bandar Jask in the east) of Hormozgan Province. A questionnaire was used to record the sociodemographic features of the participants during sample collecting. An in-house ELISA test, using crude antigens obtained from cell culture of Plasmodium falciparum, was adapted and used to detect anti-malaria antibodies in the sera.

During micropaleontological investigations in 5 sampling stations around the Kish Island, 14 genera and 15 species of dead Cenozoic benthic foraminifera were determined and described. Next to these assemblages, other organisms, such as microgastropods and spines of echinids were also looked into. Email: <mrshok@hotmail.com> Abstract In this paper, the coral status of Iranian waters in the Persian Gulf are reviewed and discussed based on the obtained results and information after three years of field surveys in Nay Band Bay, Kish and Farur islands. Altogether, 27 species of corals were identified from the studied areas, belonging to 9 families and 20 genera. Faviidae with 6 genera and 8 species is the most diverse of all families. On the other hand, Poritidae with 2 genera and 4 species is the most abundant corals in all areas. In the last 10 years, Acropora has declined from being the most abundant genus in shallow waters of fringing islands, to almost absennt, due to environmental stresses and human impacts. Anacropora forbesi is reported for the first time from the area. Regarding the coral health, the live coral coverage ranges from 9 to 30%, with minimum coverage in Kish Island and maximum in Nay Band Bay. During this study, no new bleached coral was observed at the surveyed areas, though in the past few years, considerable bleaching events have occurred throughout the area.

International conservation policies and programms recognize and support indigenous and community conserved areas and encourage all states to do the same. This thesis aimed to introduce marine and coastal Indigenous and Community Conserved Areas and the related laws, regulations and development plans thoroughly in Iran. The main focus of this thesis is on traditional conservation by local communities in Qeshm Island, located in Hormozgan province in south of Iran along the Persian Gulf. Through this study, it was concluded that indigenous people and local communities have an important role in governing protected areas and it is recommended to include them in conservation programms. 3 SUPERVISORS: Dr. Anthony Charles Dr. Francois Bailet Ms. Valentina Germani 4 Acronyms CBD Convention on Biological

  • Otolith Weight and Fish Length of Sardinella Sindensis
Dehghani et al. Marine Biodiversity Records (2016) 9:44 DOI 10.1186/s41200-016-0039-0 MARINE RECORD Open Access Otolith dimensions (length, width), otolith weight and fish length of Sardinella sindensis (Day, 1878), as index for environmental studies, Persian Gulf, Iran Mohsen Dehghani1,3*, Ehsan Kamrani1, Ali Salarpouri2 and Sana Sharifian1,3 Abstract Background: Sardines are the most important commercial fishes for Iran. However, information about biology and ecology of sind sardine in Persian Gulf and Oman Sea is scarce. Methods: In this study, relationship between fish length and otolith length, -width and -weight of Sardinella sindensis from Bandar Lengeh and Qeshm Island, Persian Gulf were analyzed. In total, 128 and 120 fishes collected from Commercial catches during March 2011- February 2012 in the Bandar Lengeh and Qeshm Island respectively. Results: There were no significant differences between left and right otolith (t-test, P > 0.05) or between males and females otoliths (ANCOVA, P > 0.05). For these reasons, only right otoliths were used for next analysis and data of both sexes were pooled. Relationships between fish length and otolith length, width and weight were described by linear regression models and high correlation was shown for all relationships. The highest correlation was between fish length and otolith length (Bandar Lengeh, R2 = 0.8722; Qeshm Island, R2 = 0.8661) and relationship between fish length and otolith width showed less correlation than other relationships (Bandar Lengeh, R2 = 0.7355; Qeshm Island, R2 = 0.7275). Conclusions: The result from this study shows that fish length and otolith growth have a positive relationship, so can be a useful tool to evaluate the growth of fish and fish stocks and finally fisheries management.

Iranian J Arthropod-Borne Dis, (2007), 1(1): 21-27 H Vatandoost et al.: Ecology of Anopheles… Original Article Ecology of Anopheles dthali Patton in Bandar Abbas District, Hormozgan Province, Southern Iran *H Vatandoost, M Shahi, AA Hanafi-Bojd, MR Abai, MA Oshaghi, F Rafii Dept. of Medical Entomology and Vector Control, School of Public Health and Institute of Public Health Research, Medical Sciences/Tehran University, Iran (Received 9 Oct 2006; accepted 19 Feb 2007) ABSTRACT Ecology of Anopheles dthali was studied in Bandar Abbas County, where there is indigenous malaria. Anopheles dthali plays as a secondary malaria vector in the region. It is active throughout the year in mountainous area with two peaks of activity, whereas in coastal area it has one peak. There is no report of hibernation or aestivation for this species in the re- gion. Precipitin tests on specimens from different parts showed that 15.6-20.8% were positive for human blood. This species usually rests outdoors. It has different larval habitats. Insecticides susceptibility tests on adult females exhibited susceptibil- ity to all insecticides recommended by WHO. LT50 for the currently used insecticide, lambda-cyhalothrin, is measured less than one minute. The irritability tests to pyrethroid insecticides, showed that permethrin and lambda-cyhalothrin had more irritancy compared to deltamethrin and cyfluthrin. Larval bioassay using malathion, chlorpyrifos, temephos and fenithrothion did not show any sing of resistance to these larvicides at the diagnostic dose. It is recommended that all the decision makers should consider the results of our study for any vector control measures in the region.
