CHRIS SALE took his third consecutive loss to the Twins, going 6.2 innings and allowing six runs (5 earned) on eight hits with one walk and 10 strikeouts…he is 1‐3 with a 6.46 ERA (23.2 IP, 17 ER) in four starts against the Twins this year…in fact, 17 of his 32 earned runs allowed this season have come to Minnesota…Sale’s consecutive innings with at least one strikeout was snapped at 38.0 innings when he failed to record a strikeout in the fourth inning, and his streak is the longest in baseball since Minnesota’s Johan Santana struck out one hitter in 39 straight innings in 2002…this was his seventh straight game with 10‐plus strikeouts, becoming the first pitcher to do so since Randy Johnson also had seven straight games of 10‐or‐more strikeouts from April 13‐May 13, 2011…he had the 26th double‐digit strikeout game of his career, extending the franchise record. ADAM LAROCHE (3‐for‐4) hit his ninth homer of the season to lead off the second inning…it was his fourth RBI in the last five game after having just two in his previous 15 games…all nine of his homers have come off right‐handers, and 202 of his 252 in his career have been against right‐ handers…LaRoche had a hit in every game of the series, including two multi‐hit games, finishing .545 (6‐for‐11) with three RBI…he had his third three‐hit game of the season, and his first with three extra‐base hits. ADAM EATON (2‐for‐4) recorded his 17th multi‐hit game of the season with a single and triple…he has a hit in 10 of his last 12 road games, batting .348 (16‐for‐46) in that stretch. TWINS NOTES: THE TWINS have won three consecutive series against the White Sox and 14 series overall on the year…Minnesota has gone 9‐4 against the Sox, including going 6‐1 at Target Field…they have outscored the Sox 78‐35 this season, 52‐17 at Target Field…the Twins finished 5‐3 on their homestand, and have now gone 25‐15 at home this season…they are 15‐9 in series finales and 6‐4 in rubber games...seven of the nine Twins starters had a hit, while eight of the nine reached base. PHIL HUGHES recorded his second straight win after tying a season‐high by going 8.0 innings and giving up one run on six hits with no walks and five strikeouts…the only run he allowed came on an Adam LaRoche home run…in fact, in between the Anthony Rizzo’s home run in the fourth inning June 19 and the LaRoche home run today he gave up in the second inning, he retired 18 straight batters, the most consecutive hitters retired by a Twin this season…Hughes, who was celebrating his 29th birthday today, has a 2.43 ERA (29.2 IP, 8 ER) with four quality starts over his last four starts…he went 8.0‐or‐more innings, giving up no more than one earned run for the eighth time in his career…Hughes has gone 8.0 innings in consecutive starts for the first time since July 1‐7, 2012 when he also went 8.0 innings in starts against the Indians and White Sox. BRIAN DOZIER (2‐for‐4) hit his 100th career double in the fourth inning…with 23 doubles through 71 games, Dozier is on pace for 52 this season; Justin Morneau’s 47 doubles in 2008 are the most any Twin has hit in a single season…he later scored his 56th run of the season that inning, which is second among all MLB players…he is on pace for 127 runs this season…Dozier and Todd Frazier are the only players in baseball this year with 20‐or‐more doubles and 50‐or‐more runs scored. TORII HUNTER (1‐for‐4) doubled home the Twins first run of the game…he has hit in 11 straight games against the White Sox, batting .333 (16‐ for‐48) against them this season…Hunter has exactly one hit in each of the last six game, marking his fourth streak of hitting in six‐plus games this year, with his season‐high coming from May 20‐June 2 when he hit in 10 straight. SHANE ROBINSON (2‐for‐3) has multiple hit games in three of his last four starts, batting .462 (6‐for‐13) in that stretch…Robinson had just one hit in his previous 20 at‐bats at Target Field…he drove in his first run at home since May 7 against Oakland, a span of 10 games. EDUARDO NUNEZ (1‐for‐4) hit a go‐ahead double in the fourth inning…Nunez has a hit in 10 of his last 12 starts, batting .326 (14‐for‐43) with eight extra‐base hits and five RBI. KURT SUZUKI (2‐for‐3) has hit safely in eight of his last nine games, batting .303 (10‐for‐33) in that span…he has an RBI in four straight games. .

Then how to explain a night such as Tuesday? It all came so easily for Ellis and his A's teammates in a 14-0 stomping of the Los Angeles Angels. The run total was a season high, as was their 15 hits. The A's swept the two-game series and moved into a first-place tie with the Texas Rangers in the American League West. It's the first time the A's have occupied first since June 3 last season, when they also were deadlocked with Texas. Leading the hit parade was Ellis, the second baseman who has shined defensively but has been the invisible man in the batter's box. Sure, he collected three hits Sunday against the Chicago White Sox, but one was a bloop job and another was an infield single. And he did bring home Monday's winning run against the Angels with a fielder's-choice grounder. But he hit the ball with authority Tuesday, finishing 3 for 4 with a season-high four RBIs. That lifted his average from .194 to .210. Ellis was happiest to deliver with runners on base. "I really pride myself on doing good in that situation, and I haven't done that this year," he said. "It's nice to get a couple hits with guys in scoring position." Ellis smoked a run-scoring double off the left-field wall in the A's three-run second.

Each state of the MDP models the pitcher’s current pitch selection in a Markovian fashion, conditional on the information immediately prior to making the current pitch. This in- cludes the count prior to the previous pitch, his ensuing pitch selec- tion, the batter’s ensuing action and the result of the pitch. The necessary Markovian probabilities can be estimated by the rel- evant observed conditional proportions in MLB pitch-by-pitch game data. These probabilities could be pitcher-specific, using only the data from one pitcher, or general, using the data from a collection of pitchers. Optimal batting strategies against these estimated conditional dis- tributions of pitch selection can be ascertained by Value Iteration. Optimal batting strategies against a pitcher-specific conditional dis- tribution can be contrasted to those calculated from the general con- ditional distributions associated with a collection of pitchers. In this manuscript, a single season of MLB data is used to cal- culate the conditional distributions to find optimal pitcher-specific and general (against a collection of pitchers) batting strategies. These strategies are subsequently evaluated by conditional distributions cal- culated from a different season for the same pitchers.

The righthander received 25 of the 26 first place votes, with the other vote going to first baseman Miguel Cabrera. Verlander led the American League with 24 wins, a 2.40 ERA and 250 strikeouts in 2011 to become just the second pitcher in franchise history to lead all three categories in a single season, joining Hal Newhouser, who accomplished the feat in 1945. He became the first American League pitcher to win the triple crown since Minnesota’s Johan Santana did so in 2006. In addition to leading the league in wins, ERA and strikeouts, Verlander also topped all league pitchers with an .828 winning percentage, 251.0 innings pitched, a .192 batting average against, 6.24 hits per nine innings and 8.39 baserunners per nine innings. Additional season superlatives included a 16-3 record following a Tigers loss. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, it marked the most wins by a pitcher following a team loss since Steve Carlton posted 19 such wins for the Philadelphia Phillies during the 1972 season. With 250 strikeouts, Verlander has now recorded 200-or-more strikeouts in three straight seasons, marking the longest streak by a Tigers pitcher since Mickey Lolich did so in six straight seasons from 1969-74.
