He takes a little off to get ahead of Huff, but Huff sends it into orbit for a grand slam! Lincecum whiffs Walker and Wright, but the damage is done; the Taxmen have score 5 runs on 1 hit. The Dogfish respond with an Iannetta triple and an Andrus squeeze. TX leads 5-2. Hughes comes in to get out of a 1st & 3rd jam in the 3rd inning. But wait...Lincecum (1WL) then hits for Manny and doubles, tiring Saito! Justin Upton hits for Ianetta, but Saito remains in the game tired. Upton finds the weak spot (literally), and the Dogfish now have a 5-run lead! The Chiefs get a 1-out double in the 7th, but Hellickson comes on to retire Wright and Cabrera. Boesch leads off the 8th with a triple, but Putz strikes out the side. On to the 9th, MD up 8-3.....after getting Izturis to pop to short, Putz leaves in favor of Gallardo. Single, double, walk. Casper "The Friendly Freak" Wells [35-41-66(8)] steps to the plate. He hits one to CF but McCutchen tracks it down for a Sac fly. Up steps Barajas, the Chiefs' last hope, the pitch.....a harmless comebacker, and the Dogfish hang on for the 8-7 win and even the series! W - Sabathia (1-0). L - Carpenter (1-1). HR - C.Santana (1), Wright (1), Morse (1). Game 5 - Buchholz vs. Dickey The Chiefs score 2 in the 2nd on a Cabrera walk, a Thome double, a Burrell single and a GIDP. Lefty Doug Slaten comes on to get ph-er Upton to fly out and whiffs Braun. Hanrahan gets the final out by striking out Sean Rodriguez, who had come in for the injured Youkalis. Bottomw of the 5th, a Youk RBI single gives MD a 3-2 lead and chases Cahill. Johan Santana comes in and induces Carlos Santana to hit into an inning-ending DP. Top of the 6th, the Chiefs load the bases with no outs. Granderson ties the game with a Sac Fly, but Verlander gets a GIDP from Barajas to avoid further damage. Top of the 7th, the Chiefs load the bases again with 2 outs, with Thome facing Putz. Andrus makes a nice play to end the threat. After 7, the score is tied 3-3. Now the funs starts...If you have a heart condition, please do not read... Top of the 8th, Burrell leads off with a walk. Dyson pinch-runs and steals second. Granderson singles him home, tiring Putz. Hughes trots in from the pen. Carpenter hits for Barajas and lays down a sac bunt. Izturis singles home Granderson on a play at the plate. Hughes gets Huff and Walker to avoid further damage. TX leads 5-3. Bottom of the 8th...Mgr. Joe Carter then decides to bring in Benoit to get the last six outs and bring the Championship to Taxachusetts. Youkalis - single. Santana - single. Manny - single. Benoit is tired and has not retired a batter! Fuentes comes on to face Vizquel, who must bat, as Thole hit for Andrus earlier in the game. The Chiefs have the corners in. Vizquel smacks one to third (3B-X 3e21), and David Wright starts a 5-2-3 doubleplay! But the Dogfish still have men on 2nd & 3rd with Sean Rodriguez, who must bat, at the plate. Saito comes on and strikes him out to get out of the bases loaded, nobody outs mess created by Benoit. Wright leads off the top of the 9th with a solo HR. Wells doubles with 2-outs and moves to 3rd on a WP. Hughes issues an IBB to Granderson, and Hellickson comes on to get Molina to end the inning. The Chiefs lead 6-3 and need only 3 outs to take the series. To this point in the game, the Taxmen have used the following pitchers: Cahill, J.Santana, Hanrahan, Slaten, Benoit, Fuentes & Saito. Brandon Lyon sits alone in the Chief pen. Saito stays in to face the top of the Milford lineup. McCutchen hits one to CF, but Granderson makes the catch. Heyward flies to left. The Chiefs are one out away. But Braun doubles. Ike Davis walks. Youkalis steps to the plate as the tying run (but he is also minus-eleven in the clutch). Youk triples! Youk! Youk! Youk! Saito is tired, and the tying run is on 3rd. Up to the plate steps Carlos Santana who has already hit a 3-run HR off Saito's card to win game 4. Mgr. Carter brings in his last available pitcher, Brandon Lyon. Carlos rolls a 3-2 on his card, a single! But wait, what's that omega sign? It's a choke out, and the Chiefs hang on to win the 2011 World Series! TX 110-001-021/ 6-12-1 MD 100-110-002/ 5-10-0 W - Slaten (1-0). L - Putz (0-1). HR - Wright (2). MVP honors go to Aubrey Huff, who hit the big grand slam in game 2, had a pair of HRs in the pivotal game 5, and went 2-3 with two walks in game 6. Congratulations to Glen on a great season! What a team, with Jay Bruce and Justin Upton on the bench, and a rotation of Verlander, Sabathia, Buchholz, Lincecum and Gallardo. Needless to say, the World Series will continue to be a familiar event for Dogfish fans. But for now, pass me the goggles, the Chiefs are Champs! Can you believe it? .

A’s News Clips, Wednesday, May 18, 2011 Oakland A's pound Los Angeles Angels 14-0 By Joe Stiglich, Oakland Tribune Mark Ellis has endured a season-long struggle with the bat. Then how to explain a night such as Tuesday? It all came so easily for Ellis and his A's teammates in a 14-0 stomping of the Los Angeles Angels. The run total was a season high, as was their 15 hits. The A's swept the two-game series and moved into a first-place tie with the Texas Rangers in the American League West. It's the first time the A's have occupied first since June 3 last season, when they also were deadlocked with Texas. Leading the hit parade was Ellis, the second baseman who has shined defensively but has been the invisible man in the batter's box. Sure, he collected three hits Sunday against the Chicago White Sox, but one was a bloop job and another was an infield single. And he did bring home Monday's winning run against the Angels with a fielder's-choice grounder. But he hit the ball with authority Tuesday, finishing 3 for 4 with a season-high four RBIs. That lifted his average from .194 to .210. Ellis was happiest to deliver with runners on base. "I really pride myself on doing good in that situation, and I haven't done that this year," he said. "It's nice to get a couple hits with guys in scoring position." Ellis smoked a run-scoring double off the left-field wall in the A's three-run second.

  • Exploiting Pitcher Decision-Making Using Reinforcement Learning” (DOI: 10.1214/13-AOAS712SUPP; .Pdf)
The Annals of Applied Statistics 2014, Vol. 8, No. 2, 926–955 DOI: 10.1214/13-AOAS712 c Institute of Mathematical Statistics, 2014 MONEYBaRL: EXPLOITING PITCHER DECISION-MAKING USING REINFORCEMENT LEARNING By Gagan Sidhu∗,† and Brian Caffo‡ General Analytics∗1, University of Alberta† and Johns Hopkins University‡ This manuscript uses machine learning techniques to exploit base- ball pitchers’ decision making, so-called “Baseball IQ,” by modeling the at-bat information, pitch selection and counts, as a Markov De- cision Process (MDP). Each state of the MDP models the pitcher’s current pitch selection in a Markovian fashion, conditional on the information immediately prior to making the current pitch. This in- cludes the count prior to the previous pitch, his ensuing pitch selec- tion, the batter’s ensuing action and the result of the pitch. The necessary Markovian probabilities can be estimated by the rel- evant observed conditional proportions in MLB pitch-by-pitch game data. These probabilities could be pitcher-specific, using only the data from one pitcher, or general, using the data from a collection of pitchers. Optimal batting strategies against these estimated conditional dis- tributions of pitch selection can be ascertained by Value Iteration. Optimal batting strategies against a pitcher-specific conditional dis- tribution can be contrasted to those calculated from the general con- ditional distributions associated with a collection of pitchers. In this manuscript, a single season of MLB data is used to cal- culate the conditional distributions to find optimal pitcher-specific and general (against a collection of pitchers) batting strategies. These strategies are subsequently evaluated by conditional distributions cal- culated from a different season for the same pitchers.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: MEDIA RELATIONS THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 2011 313-471-2000 / tigers.com @Official_Tigers / @TigresdeDetroit facebook.com/tigers JUSTIN VERLANDER NAMED TIGER OF THE YEAR BY THE DETROIT CHAPTER OF THE BASEBALL WRITERS ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA DETROIT – Justin Verlander has been selected as the Tiger of the Year for 2011 in voting by the Detroit Chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America. The righthander received 25 of the 26 first place votes, with the other vote going to first baseman Miguel Cabrera. Verlander led the American League with 24 wins, a 2.40 ERA and 250 strikeouts in 2011 to become just the second pitcher in franchise history to lead all three categories in a single season, joining Hal Newhouser, who accomplished the feat in 1945. He became the first American League pitcher to win the triple crown since Minnesota’s Johan Santana did so in 2006. In addition to leading the league in wins, ERA and strikeouts, Verlander also topped all league pitchers with an .828 winning percentage, 251.0 innings pitched, a .192 batting average against, 6.24 hits per nine innings and 8.39 baserunners per nine innings. Additional season superlatives included a 16-3 record following a Tigers loss. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, it marked the most wins by a pitcher following a team loss since Steve Carlton posted 19 such wins for the Philadelphia Phillies during the 1972 season. With 250 strikeouts, Verlander has now recorded 200-or-more strikeouts in three straight seasons, marking the longest streak by a Tigers pitcher since Mickey Lolich did so in six straight seasons from 1969-74.

Moreover, this impact extends beyond the limited context of sport since, in addition to the obvious economic benefits for many families, it enhances the image of the Spanish-speaking community in the United States. At the level of language, contact allows English to influence Spanish, especially in the area of vocabulary, which Spanish assimilates and adapts according to its own peculiar structures. Baseball, which was invented in the United States during the first half of the nineteenth century, was introduced into Spanish America about thirty or forty years later.
