El nuevo nombre refleja el estre- cho vínculo de la Orquesta con su sede: con más de cien conciertos cada temporada, la Orquesta deja su propia marca en la programación de la Konzerthaus. En tándem con su nuevo Director Titular, Lothar Zagrosek, la Konzerthausorchester Berlin continúa enriqueciendo la vida musical de la capital alemana con cautivadores programas y nuevos formatos de concierto. Fundada en 1952, la Konzerthausorchester Berlin (KOB) destacó signifi- cativamente bajo la dirección de su Director Titular Kurt Sanderling (entre 1960 y 1977), ganando un gran reconocimiento internacional. Numerosas estrellas de la escena musical como David Oistrach y Emil Giles han actuado regularmente con la Orquesta, pasado por diferentes ubicaciones. No obstante, el maestro Sanderling consiguió crear un fuer- te grupo de seguidores para sus conciertos de abono. En 1977, Günter Herbig fue nombrado Director Titular, seguido por Claus Peter Flor, que asumió este cargo en 1984. En este mismo año se reabrió el famoso Schauspielhaus de Karl Friedrich Schinkel, como sala de conciertos. La KOB tuvo así su primera sede permanente en la plaza más bonita de la ciudad, la Gendarmenmarkt. Flor llevó a la Orquesta a numerosas giras por todo el mundo. En 1988 realizaron una gira por el Reino Unido, EE. UU. y Japón durante siete semanas, y consolidó así la ya excelente reputación de la Orquesta también internacionalmente. Durante el período de Michael Schönwandt (1992/1998), la Orquesta se unió oficialmente a la Konzerthaus, convirtiéndola así en su sede. Des- de 2001, año del 50º aniversario de la Orquesta, Eliahu Inbal dirigió la KOB en su nueva etapa. En 2001 tuvo un gran éxito en su gira por Japón, tocando 15 conciertos en 13 ciudades. En 2004, Inbal y la Orquesta realizaron una gira de dos semanas en España, en 2005 en Chi- na, Japón y Corea del Sur y en 2006 la Orquesta volvió con Inbal a España. Con casi 16.000 suscriptores, la Konzerthausorchester Berlin está entre las orquestas con mayor número de abonados regulares de Alemania. En agosto de 2006, un nuevo nombre empezó a escribir otro capítulo en la historia de la Orquesta: Lothar Zagrosek, quien se ha propuesto ampliar de forma continuada el repertorio y el nivel estilístico de la Konzer- thausorchester con el fin de interpretar música desde Monteverdi hasta Lachenmann. LOTHAR ZAGROSEK DIRECTOR Empezó su carrera musical como miembro del Coro de la Catedral de Regensburg. De 1962 a 1967 estudió con Hans Swarovsky, Istvàn Ker- tész, Bruno Maderna y Herbert von Karajan. En 1982 fue nombrado Director Titular de la Orquesta Sinfónica de la Radio Austríaca de Viena, a continuación estuvo tres años de Director Musical de la Ópera de París (1986/1989), en cuyo período también fue Director Invitado de la Orquesta Sinfónica de la BBC. Entre 1990 y 1992, Lothar Zagrosek fue Director Musical General de la Ópera de Leipzig. Des- de 1995 estuvo vinculado a la Joven Deutsche Philharmonie como Primer Director Invitado y Asesor Artístico, y desde 1997 fue Director Musical de la Ópera de Stuttgart. Desde la pasada temporada es el nuevo Director Titular de la Orquesta Sinfónica de Berlín. Además de su labor como director de ópera, lo que le ha llevado a diri- gir, entre otras, las Óperas de Viena y Hamburgo, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Théâtre de la Monnaie de Bruselas, London Royal Opera House Covent Garden y en el Festival de Glyndebourne, Lothar Zagrosek ha colabora- do con muchas de las más importantes orquestas internacionales, como la Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig, la Orquesta Filarmónica de Berlín, Filarmónica de Múnich, las más importantes orquestas de radio alema- nas, Sinfónica de Viena, Filarmónica de Londres, Orquesta dell’Accade- mia di Santa Cecilia, Orquesta Nacional de Francia, Sinfónica de Mon- treal y la Orquesta Sinfónica NHK de Tokio. Asimismo, ha actuado en prestigiosos festivales como el Wiener Festwochen, Berliner Festwo- chen, Proms de Londres y el Festival de Ópera de Múnich. También es invitado habitual de los Festivales de Música Contemporánea de Donaueschingen, Berlín, Bruselas y París, y ha sido invitado repetida- mente al Festival de Salzburgo, por última vez en agosto de 2005. Como Director Musical de la Ópera de Stuttgart obtuvo cuatro veces el galardón de «Compañía de Ópera del Año», y él mismo fue nombrado en dos ocasiones «Director del Año». En 2005, la producción de Busoni «Doctor Fausto», dirigida por él, fue galardonada con el premio «Produc- ción del Año». Entre los numerosos CDs de Lothar Zagrosek hay que destacar como los más importantes «La Muerte de Dantons» de Gottfried von Einem, «San Francisco de Asís» de Olivier Messiaen (con Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau) y la grabación de la obra completa para coro y orquesta de Hindemith. Realizó una serie de grabaciones para la colección «Entartete Musik» con Decca, entre ellas «Jonny spielt auf» de Ernst Krenek, «El Emperador de Atlantis» de Victor Ullmann, la «Sinfonía alemana» de Hanns Eislers (todas ellas con la Gewandhausorchester de Leipzig), «Der Gewaltige Hahnrei» de Berthold Goldschmidt, «Die Vögel» de Walter Braunfels, así como el último lanzamiento, «Verlobung im Traume» de Hans Krasa. Durante sus años escola- res continuó sus estudios de Piano en Hannover y Salzburgo con Karl-Heinz Kammerling. Después de su graduación en la Escuela Supe- rior asistió a la Universidad de las Artes de Berlín con el profesor Klaus Hellwig, y tras obtener su diploma continuó sus estudios en la Acade- mia Internacional de Piano Lago Como (Italia). Von Eckardstein ha ganado numerosos concursos, tanto nacionales como internacionales. Entre ellos destacan el Concurso Steinway en Hamburgo (Primer Premio en 1990), el Encuentro Internacional de Jóve- nes Pianistas en Italia (Primer Premio en 1991), el Concurso Arthur Schnabel en Berlín (Primer Premio en 1998), Concurso Feruccio-Busoni en Bozen (1998) y el Concurso ARD de Múnich (Segundo Premio en 1998). En el año 2000 recibió el Tercer Premio y el Premio Especial a la «Mejor Interpretación de Música Contemporánea» en el Concurso Inter- nacional de Piano de Leeds, en el que tuvo el privilegio y la oportuni- dad de tocar con la Orquesta Sinfónica de la Ciudad de Birmingham, dirigida por Sir Simon Rattle. La mayoría de críticos musicales que estu- vieron presentes escogieron unánimemente a Severin von Eckardstein como su ganador. En junio de 2003 ganó el Primer Premio en el prestigioso Concurso Internacional Reina Elisabeth de Bruselas, ya que en la última ronda del Concurso realizó una actuación extraordinaria con obras de Beethoven y Prokofiev. Esta combinación muestra ciertamente la asombrosa versa- tilidad de este joven gran pianista. Entretanto, ha tocado en muchos de los grandes escenarios del mundo. Ha ofrecido conciertos junto a famosas orquestas como la Sinfónica de Berlín, English Chamber, BBC Philharmonic o la Academia de St. Mar- tins in the Fields.     Marco Polo – The Label of Discovery Doubt was expressed by his contemporaries as to the truth of Marco Polo’s account of his years at the court of the Mongol Emperor of China. For some he was known as a man of a million lies, and one recent scholar has plausibly suggested that the account of his travels was a fiction inspired by a family dispute. There is, though, no doubt about the musical treasures daily uncovered by the Marco Polo record label. To paraphrase Marco Polo himself: All people who wish to know the varied music of men and the peculiarities of the various regions of the world, buy these recordings and listen with open ears. The original concept of the Marco Polo label was to bring to listeners unknown compositions by well-known composers. There was, at the same time, an ambition to bring the East to the West. Since then there have been many changes in public taste and in the availability of recorded music. Composers once little known are now easily available in recordings. Marco Polo, in consequence, has set out on further adventures of discovery and exploration. One early field of exploration lay in the work of later Romantic composers, whose turn has now come again. In addition to pioneering recordings of the operas of Franz Schreker, Der ferne Klang (The Distant Sound), Die Gezeichneten (The Marked Ones) and Die Flammen (The Flames), were three operas by Wagner’s son, Siegfried.     DECCA DISCOGRAPHY >>V VIENNA, Austria, Germany, Hungary, etc. The Vienna Philharmonic was the jewel in Decca’s crown, particularly from 1956 when the engineers adopted the Sofiensaal as their favoured studio. The contract with the orchestra was secured partly by cultivating various chamber ensembles drawn from its membership. Vienna was favoured for symphonic cycles, particularly in the mid-1960s, and for German opera and operetta, including Strausses of all varieties and Solti’s “Ring” (1958-65), as well as Mackerras’s Janá ček (1976-82). Karajan recorded intermittently for Decca with the VPO from 1959-78. But apart from the New Year concerts, resumed in 2008, recording with the VPO ceased in 1998. Outside the capital there were various sessions in Salzburg from 1984-99. Germany was largely left to Decca’s partner Telefunken, though it was so overshadowed by Deutsche Grammophon and EMI Electrola that few of its products were marketed in the UK, with even those soon relegated to a cheap label. It later signed Harnoncourt and eventually became part of the competition, joining Warner Classics in 1990. Decca did venture to Bayreuth in 1951, ’53 and ’55 but wrecking tactics by Walter Legge blocked the release of several recordings for half a century. The Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra’s sessions moved from Geneva to its home town in 1963 and continued there until 1985. The exiled Philharmonia Hungarica recorded in West Germany from 1969-75.     Performance The Stuttgart Ring on DVD: A Review Portfolio Everyday Totalitarianism: Reflections on the Stuttgart Ring Downloaded from By the standards of contemporary German opera, the recent Stuttgart production of Richard Wagner’s Ring des Nibelungen has generated a great deal of hype. Critics hail it as an epochal “milestone in the history of Wagner production, akin to the Patrice Che´reau Bayreuth centenary Ring of 1976,” and praise it for single- handedly disproving “widespread claims that opera is dead.”1 The most com- http://oq.oxfordjournals.org monly cited virtue of the production is its use of a different director for each opera. Klaus Zehelein, Intendant of the Stuttgart Staatsoper from 1991 to 2006, a dramaturge by profession and the man who organized this Ring, offers unabashed self-praise: “Only because we arranged for a different team to direct each piece of the Ring will its moments of exposition finally realize those sublime theatrical forms that Wagner offers us.”2 The result is now available on DVD. at Princeton University on June 17, 2010 *** Why four directors and not one? Zehelein’s most straightforward justification, the one that dominates press releases from Stuttgart and reviews in the German press, is that stage directors must be liberated. Any effort to impose a unified concept or meaning on the Ring cycle (Totalita¨tsanspruch), Zehelein argues, restricts the director’s creative freedom and is thus “totalitarian.”3 Holistic con- cepts encumber directors by constraining them to adopt interpretations of the Ring consistent with the overarching ideas, symbols, and musical leitmotifs in Wagner’s text and music.4 By treating the Ring instead as a series of disconnected episodes, directors are free to respond to each dramatic moment without “prior assumptions” or “obligations.”5 A modern audience should similarly perceive the Ring as a series of disconnected theatrical moments or “theatrical piecework.”6 Having no big message to transmit and no one in charge enhances artistic freedom and releases creative energy.
