It has become globalized and has adapted to different environments and social contexts. Today in Beirut, Lebanon a phenomenal street art movement is infiltrating public space. This particular movement questions the common understandings that have constructed Western graffiti artists and graffiti culture for so long. A new group of street artists is working to make the art form more inclusive of Beirut’s many communities by writing messages that speak to the whole of Lebanon. They are making their work known in the presence of law enforcement, different sects, and generations. How does an art form that has long been considered as matter out of place get transformed into an empowering feature of the city? What does this say about how societies differ in defining art and deviance? And furthermore, what does this street art movement accomplish in the complicated and dynamic environment of Beirut, Lebanon? ©2014 by Jaime A. I. INTRODUCTION Most who are knowledgeable about the Middle East are familiar with the cosmopolitan port-city Beirut, Lebanon. Beirut is located within the heart of the Middle East, along the Mediterranean. The area is rich with history of empires and conquests, along with a unique blend of eastern and western influences. This is a country known for liberalism and tolerance, focused on the enjoyable and practical aspects of life. At the same time however, Lebanon is known for exemplifying political and social disorganization, a country marked by sharp sectarian discord. There is profound diversity in the capital Beirut that divides the city along religious and ethnic lines. In the north east of the city is the Armenian suburb Bourj Hammoud, while in the east are the Christian districts Gemmayze and Achrafieh. In the south is the Shi’ite area called the Dahiyeh along with the Palestinian refugee camp Shatila. There is Hamra, one of the city’s most dynamic areas, which hosts many Western chains such as Dunkin Donuts and Radio Shack. This neighborhood is particularly known for being the center of nightlife in Beirut, and also is home to the American University of Beirut. Beirut’s energy and disorganization creates an air of freedom not found in other cities; Beirut is a unique space of order and chaos. Beautiful and historical landscapes that overlook the Mediterranean such as Raouche, commonly known as the Beirut Gates, or Pigeon Rocks, exist in an environmental state of disregard. Upscale and polished architecture of the downtown Beirut Souks and Saifi gardens are adjacent to lower class shanties. From sun up until sun down the traffic is chaotic and noisy, yet the locals’ patience is astounding. The citizens share a peculiar composure that is cynical and patient

It is no wonder graffiti, with its strong social and political agendas, hit the streets, walls, pavements, overpasses and subways of the world with such passion. The city of New York in the 1970s was awash with graffiti. It seemed to cover every surface. When travelling the subway it was often impossible to see out of the carriage for the graffiti. This study portrays the Lebanese Christian national movement as a social movement with a national agenda struggling to disseminate its conception of the identity of a country within very diverse and hostile societal settings. He painted a unique cube over a 2 day period outside of the museum, where he engages with the people around him while he paints. http://www.aerosolarabic.com/portfolio/mohammed-ali-in- sweden/ Overview The following lesson is part of a Visual Arts instructional unit exploring Graffiti as a visual art form expressing contemporary ideas of Islamic culture. Historically, Illuminated manuscripts (especially Illuminated Qur’ans) were instrumental in spreading ideas of Islam. The function, form and style development of Illuminated manuscripts correlated with the need to not only record and spread the revelations bestowed upon the prophet Muhammad, but also to signify the importance and reverence of the word of Allah. Contemporary Islamic Graffiti developed in response to a need to illuminate contemporary ideas of Islam in a visual platform that is not only visually captivating, but in the public sphere. Graffiti tends to challenge perceptions and hold a visual mirror up for society to reflect upon cultural practices and structures. Contemporary Islamic Graffiti artists Muhammed Ali and eL Seed are creating a platform for spreading contemporary ideas of Islam and challenging stereotypes and perceptions of Muslims and Islam as a monolithic religion. In this unit, students will first explore the visual art form of historic Illuminated Manuscripts and engage in critical analysis of at least one historic work.

It analyses four urban areas—Berlin, Beirut, Belfast, Jerusalem—either of which has experienced or still experiences extreme divisions related to nationality, ethnicity, religion, and/or culture. Each case study is investigated in terms of planning approaches before division and after reunifi- cation (if applicable). The relation between division and planning is reciprocal: planning effects, and is effected by urban division. Therefore, it is generally assumed that traditional planning approaches are insufficient and that the recognized engagement meth- ods of planners in the planning process are ineffective to overcome the problems posed by divided cities. Theoretically, a variety of urban scholars have proposed different perspectives on this challenge. In analysing the role of planning in di- vided cities, both the role of planners, and planning interventions are evaluated within the light of related literature. The case studies indicate that even though different planning approaches have different consequences on the ground, there is a universal trend in harmony with the rest of the world in reshaping these cities.

This wall is a collaboration between two Latin American artists, Abstrk from Miami and Entes from Peru. The artists combine fictional characters with portraits of locally and nationally renown graffiti writers like Lady Pink, Reds, Verse, and the curator of the Museum of Graffiti, Mare139. The faces are so cohesive that only a trained eye can differentiate between Abstrk’s vampire style and Entes’ signature characters. Be sure to grab a pamphlet inside the Museum so you can play “What’s the difference?”. 2. Artist Ezo has been painting aerosol art since 1979. His interest in documenting the ephemeral graffiti artform led him to founding one of the first internet graffiti directories in 1997. Fast forward to 2020, Ezo still focuses on preserving graffiti history as evidenced by him painting this portrait of Phase II who is considered to be a legend in the graffiti art movement and is generally credited with originating the "bubble letter" style of aerosol writing. Phase II passed away on December 20, 2019, two weeks after the opening of the Museum of Graffiti.
