October 2020 Message from the Chair Dear Colleague RTS PROGRAMME AWARDS 2021 I am delighted to be the new Chair of the RTS Programme Awards. These are one of the gold standard awards in our industry and are an important showcase of the extraordinary talent evident across all genres in British television. We have taken on board feedback from the industry following last year’s awards. Our aim, as ever, is to reflect the changing television landscape and to make sure the categories recognise the kinds of programmes and talent that make up today's schedules and the best content in Britain. Following discussions with judges and entering companies we have implemented the following changes: • Updated eligibility period: The eligibility period will now follow the calendar year. For this changeover year entries will be accepted from programmes broadcast between 1 November 2019 and 31 December 2020. Please refer to the Conditions of Entry for further details. Please be aware that in order to accommodate this change we will not be able to allow extensions to the entry deadlines. • Minimum duration: We have introduced a minimum duration of 10 minutes (with the maximum duration still 15 minutes) for all performance categories • Comedy Entertainment: We have introduced a new Comedy Entertainment category alongside the existing Entertainment category. • Allocation of entries: in the genre and writing categories we will now limit the number of entries per category by broadcaster rather than by channel. Details of the new limit can be found within the description of each category. Entries in the performance categories remain at 5 per channel. -

Taboo: Why are Real-Life British Serial Killers Rarely Represented on Film? Antony Robert Earnshaw Sheffield Hallam University MA English by Research September 2017 1 Abstract This thesis assesses changing British attitudes to the dramatisation of crimes committed by domestic serial killers and highlights the dearth of films made in this country on this subject. It discusses the notion of taboos and, using empirical and historical research, illustrates how filmmakers’ attempts to initiate productions have been vetoed by social, cultural and political sensitivities. Comparisons are drawn between the prevalence of such product in the United States and its uncommonness in Britain, emphasising the issues around the importing of similar foreign material for exhibition on British cinema screens and the importance of geographic distance to notions of appropriateness. The influence of the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) is evaluated. This includes a focus on how a central BBFC policy – the so- called 30-year rule of refusing to classify dramatisations of ‘recent’ cases of factual crime – was scrapped and replaced with a case-by-case consideration that allowed for the accommodation of a specific film championing a message of tolerance. -

Peter Moffat Writer Barrister turned writer, Peter Moffat started out writing plays – his first, ‘Fine and Private Place’ was broadcast on BBC Radio – before going on to create several television dramas, including ‘Criminal Justice, ‘Silk’ and ‘North Square,’ which he won the Broadcasting Press Guild Writer’s Award. He was awarded two BAFTAS for ‘Criminal Justice,’ which was the basis for HBO’s Emmy-winning series ‘The Night Of,’ starring Riz Ahmed. EMBARGOED UNTIL 7:01PM ET TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 24TH Channel 5, Playground And MASTERPIECE On PBS Announce Cast For All Creatures Great And Small Newcomer Nicholas Ralph to play beloved vet James Herriot opposite Samuel West, Anna Madeley, Callum Woodhouse and Rachel Shenton Channel 5, BAFTA and Golden Globe-winning production company Playground (Howards End, Wolf Hall) and MASTERPIECE on PBS today announced the casting of key roles for their upcoming adaptation of best-selling author James Herriot’s cherished collection of stories, written by Ben Vanstone (The Last Kingdom) and directed by Brian Percival (Downton Abbey). Exciting newcomer Nicholas Ralph will make his television debut as the iconic vet who became renowned for his inspiring compassion, humour and love of life. Samuel West (Mr. Selfridge, On Chesil Beach) joins as Siegfried Farnon, the wonderfully eccentric veteri- nary surgeon and proprietor of Skeldale House who reluctantly hires the recently qualified Herriot into his rural practice. Mrs Hall, the resident housekeeper and matriarch of Skeldale House will be played by Anna Madeley (The Child in Time, Patrick Melrose). Siegfried’s errant and charismatic younger brother, Tristan, will be played by Callum Woodhouse (The Durrells in Corfu). Director: Johnny Campbell, Bille Eltringham Classification: M (Mature) Duration: 516 minutes (including 8 episodes) We rate it: Five stars. Date of review: 22nd October, 2009 Several years ago, audiences in both the UK and Australia were introduced to the wondrous BBC drama Life on Mars. Taking its name from a David Bowie song, Life on Mars followed the intriguing exploits of a 2006 Manchester cop, Sam Tyler, (played by the wonderful John Simm) who was hit by a car and seemingly sent back in time to 1973. The show functioned as a compelling psychological thriller, following Tyler’s efforts to discover what had sent him back in time (was he in a coma, dying, dreaming, or in some kind of limbo-land or Purgatory?) and his attempts to escape 1973 and get back to his life in 2006. At the same time, the show was a loving and at times hilarious re-creation of the 1970s British cop-show milieu (think of The Sweeney crossed with The Professionals, but shot with today’s filmmaking technology), and it featured the wonderful Philip Glenister as the now-iconic DCI Gene Hunt, a politically- incorrect, hilariously foul-mouthed and utterly lovable character who infuriated Tyler as often as he helped him in his various quests. Life on Mars was a critical and commercial hit, and it spawned a tremendously effective second series. The characters central to Life on Mars were both sympathetic and fascinating, the writing and direction of the episodes occasionally awe-inspiring, and the mystery at the heart of the entire show was brilliantly handled to the very end. -
