LA City Department of Recreation & Parks, Griffith Park Adult Community Center (GPACC) 3203 Riverside Drive Los Angeles, CA 90027 323-644-5579 Hours: 9:00 - 4:30, Monday - Friday Monty Sutherlin, Facility Director Griffith Park Adult Community Center & Club March, 2020 GPAC Club Web Site

Los Feliz Bridge Home Groundbreaking took place on Wednesday, February 26th. . . This unique temporary housing being built across the street on the parking lot is one of four homeless housing projects in Council District 4, making the district tied for first with the highest number of bridge home projects. It's just a portion of the more than 500 units of homeless housing either open or on the way. CD4 is partnering with community groups and leaders to fight homelessness in our city. The Bridge Housing is one of many solutions to a very complicated problem and tackling this crisis requires all of us to work together. GPACC patrons were invited to the official groundbreaking joined by Mayor Eric Garcetti and community leaders. In April, as this construction proceeds, Rachel Fox and Catherine Landers, field deputies for David Ryu will provide an update on the project and answer any questions you may have.

Anna Schinnerl achieves 90 years in March . . A celebration took place at Mimi’s to honor the 90th birthday of one of GPACC’s leaders - Anna Schinnerl. Anita, her daughter, and Marilyn Friedman who partners with her in leading the Monday Walking Group hosted a luncheon that honored a very special person. Anna, since almost the beginning of GPACC, has provided the group with a way of discovering our community. She would do the research and planned out our routes for each Monday trip, from Los Feliz, Silver Lake, Elysian Park and Hollywood. These routes sought out historic sights as well as those famous stairs. In addition, she is a mentor and avid player of the American Mah Jongg group. Participants from both groups all shared their gratitude of being a friend of Anna.

A Proposal for a Women’s Group Monthly Discussions . . . Thel Curran who attends Socrates Cafe is recommending that a similar discussion takes place monthly on a woman’s take on issues. It could be on a Wednesday at 1:30 in the Nutrition Room. Edith(Edie) Clark, also a Socrates Cafe regular, would be the moderator to facilitate the discussion. The topics can range from current events to issues facing families and aging. A sign-up sheet is in the lobby and if there is enough interest, you will be notified when the meetings will start.

Tuesday Book Club, Tuesday, March 10th, 10:00 - 11:30 am by Joneen Burrell

Our March selection is "Reading Lolita in Tehran" by Azar Nafisi. Imagine a group of women gathering in secret to read a banned book. Not only is that culturally offensive but it's an illegal act for which the women could be punished in many ways. How brave could you be if you were in their shoes? Let's celebrate our freedom to read any book we choose in our book club.

Mystery Readers Group, Tuesday, March 17th, 10:00 - 11:30 am by Joneen Burrell

We enjoyed author Frank Tallis and his Max Liebermann series so much we decided to read more of his books for March. The PBS series "Vienna Blood" is based on the Tallis stories although they do not exactly match the originals. Join us in the GPACC library as we enjoy another wide ranging discussion. Everyone is welcome!

9 Griffith Park Adult Community Center & Club March, 2020 GPAC Club Web Site Public Transportation Trip by Hattie Ramirez On February 24th, GPACC’s Travel Buddy MaeHsu Doyle and LA Metro’s Carlos Hernandez lead club members Rosa Cheng, Kathy Sullivan, Anna Maria Reyes, Gladys Zaldivar, Julie Pittet, Gail Glick, Marion Siu, and Luz Marie Hernandez on an interesting and informational training session on how to use public transportation. The training trip explored the Hollywood & Western Metro Station, Union Station, and the 7th St./Metro Center Station. Everyone learned important safety tips as a pedestrian and as a rider on the bus and subway, how to use the TAP vending machines at the Metro Rail stations, how to make transfers to the various rail and busway line, and other vital information. Everyone enjoyed a delicious lunch of home-style dishes at Suehiro Café in Little Tokyo. This is required training to go on future public transit trips. You can take one trip with GPACC’s On the Move Riders Club but after this, you need to take this training. On February 27th, a large group traveled downtown to enjoy the fabulous gourmet all-you-eat New Orleans Mardi Gras buffet, prepared by the culinary students at the LA Trade Technical College. There are no trips scheduled for March. We’d love your suggestions for trips this year. In the lobby, beneath the flyer showing a bus, you can write down your ideas for trips. Whoever recommends a trip that we go on, will get a $10 credit for their Senior TAP card. Contact Hattie Ramirez at the 323-376-5368 with any questions. Have fun and adventurous travels via public transportation! The On The More Riders Club (OTMRC) is an LA Metro-sponsored travel training program designed to share the joys of riding public transportation and to teach seniors how to travel independently & safely. Our group takes trips using buses, rail system, and trains to visit popular destinations & points of interest.
