The 6th International

Conference and Exhibition April 28-29-30,1986, of the - Avignon, AVIGNON' 86

Following the success of the sth International Workshop on Expert Systems and their Applications at the prestigious 14th century fortress Palace of the Popes in Avignon (France), the Agence de l'lnformatique has scheduled the 6th Workshop for April 28-30, 1986. More than 700 industrial R&D specialists, engineers, scientists, manufacturing and business executives from 30 countries attended Avignon' Bs and over 100 products were presented in 50 exhibit booths. With over one thousand participants and one hundred exhibitors expected, the sixth Workshop is among the largest international events entirely dedicated to expert systems technology. The purpose of Avignon'B6 is to provide a forum for presentation of new implementations of expert systems and basic tools & techniquesfor building expert systems. Aimed at developers and users of expert systems, the conference & exhibition will offer an assessment of available tools and techniques ; will provide practical guidelines for making decisions concerning the application of expert system technology; and will help define, clarify, and make sense of the claims, promises, and realities of practical expert system applications. The 1986 International Workshop will consist of three concurrent events : a conference dedicated both to basic tools & " techniques for building expert systems and to expert systems implementations concerning practical applications ; theoretical issues underlying knowledge engineering will also be explored ; an exhibition, in which operational or experimental " tools and applications will be demonstrated ; one-day introductory tutorials on tools and " techniques for building expert systems.

At press time, over 100 commercial organizations, industry-based users, and research organizations have confirmed their intention to participate. Most of the lea- ding international suppliers of computer equipment spe- cialized to artificial intelligence applications and a score of international expert systems houses will exhibit. Exhibited products and demonstrations will be described in a booklet to be distributed to the participants. Participants who attend all technical sessions will still have plenty of time to visit the exhibits during the pauses, after the sessions, or during the long lunch period. 18 11l INTRODUCTORY TUTORIALS TO- TOOLS AND TECHNIQUES FOR BUILDING EXPERT SYSTEMS

Two one-day introductory tutorials will be provided in parallel with the technical sessions. Organized by AFCET and given by leading specialists, these tutorials are aimed at participants seekingto have an initiation to tools and techniques for building expert systems ; the lectures will be supplemented by various demonstrations presented in the concurrent exhibition. Registration for the tutorials is not included in the conference fee ; to register use the attached form provided by AFCET. Objectives: Thepurpose ofthesesix-hour tutorials is exposing the basics of expert system technology, the main mechanisms and techniquescurrently used, andthe difficulties for their imple- mentation. At the endofthesetutorials, participantsshould have acquired the essential concepts necessary for distinguishing among the various approaches, assessing commercial products, and decidingon a line of action.

AVIGNON, SPOUSES PROGRAM Located in the sunny heart of between what was once the and the Roman Empire, Avignon belonged at one time to the 's states, which offered her protection from the wars of the Middle Ages. Since the Middle Ages, Avignon has always been a greatcultural and commercial crossroads, and a leadingart center as well. We have thepleasureto offer those people accompanying the registrants a program for visitingAvignon and its surroundings.
