Principal's Weekly Update 05/17/2021 Oviedo High School Principal’s Weekly Update May 17, 2021 Good morning, I’d like to congratulate the Class of 2021and can’t wait to celebrate them on Wednesday! This will be the last principal’s weekly update until July. If you need me over the summer, my email is [email protected]. I will be on campus most of the summer if you need to speak to me or meet with me. There is only one message I’d like to say to everyone – Although a challenging year, I’d rather spend it here at Oviedo High School with my friends, students, colleagues, and community than anywhere else in the world. Go Lions! In order to pick up graduation tickets all senior accounts must be clear. This includes student debt, textbooks returned, and borrowed laptops returned. Thank you for helping us. Congratulations to four of our student-athletes that were recognized as Seminole County Athlete of the Year in their sports! Congratulations to Coach Darty for being named the Seminole County Athletic Director of the Year! Kaylin Herbet, Girls Swimming & Diving Kyleigh Thelen, Girls Soccer Cole Gehring, Boys Lacrosse Chloe Pinkston, Girls Scholar Athlete Jen Darty, Athletic Director of the Year Our eSports OHS team has won states and now moves on to compete at the national level! The #1 state team in Florida is called the OHS Rocket League team. Congratulations to the Rocket League team consisting of the following students: • Mathew Knight • John Barbery • Alexander Lee Have a laptop to return? Laptop Return Station – Media Center during the 3 half days (May 24th, 25th and 26th) Laptop Drive-Thru – May 27th and May 28th 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 pm. Questions or concerns? Contact [email protected] Rising Juniors and Rising Seniors – Parking passes cannot be purchased next year until all debt is paid on textbooks, laptops, etc. Return all your items this year. We have our last code red drill for the year on May 20th during 5th period at approximately 9:55 a.m. The drill will last for approximately 10 minutes as the administrative team works closely with the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office to ensure that the drill goes well. It is important to note that while the drill is conducted the campus and students are safe. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding as we continue to do all that we can to make our campus as safe as possible. All SCPS high schools, including OHS, will not be allowing backpacks on our campuses the last 3 days of school (early release days). Tentatively, we will be returning to a 7-period day with 2 lunches next school year. The district reopening committee will finalize this in June. Congratulations to our Teacher of the Week Congratulations to our Teacher of the Week, Ms. Finnegan! Thank you for all your hard work on the Garden Party and everything you do for the students! Congratulations to our Students of the Week Congratulations to Spencer Mallott. Spencer is a Connect student who shows amazing participation in class, asks great questions and takes on leadership roles when in breakout groups. His enthusiasm for Biology and the way that he handles learning as a Connect student is commendable! Ms. Alfert is very proud of Spencer! Ms. Darling would like to recognize Melanie Guevara Flores as Student of the Week. She came to Oviedo from Colombia a few weeks ago speaking very little English. Despite the language barrier, Melanie is an exemplary student. She works so hard and completes all of her work. She is so sweet, and it is a joy and inspiration to have her in class! Congratulations Melanie! Dr. Daniel would like to recognize Alina Kazarian. Alina started a nationwide program called Math 4 Meals. Alina exchanges the time she tutors students in math for monetary or food donations. One hundred percent of those donations are given to a food bank local to where the student lives. Alina is currently tutoring students in Florida, Maryland, and Colorado. Alina recently wrote a check to the OHS food bank. Congratulations Alina for all you do for everyone! Athletics Update from Athletic Director Jen Darty We need more members for the athletic booster board. Please email Jon Thorton if you are interested. [email protected] Eleanor Duffy was selected as one of only 20 Junior and Seniors from 7 states that will represent the Southeast Region on the United States Water Polo Olympic Development Program. Eleanor will participate in the Regional Championships on May 28-31 in San Antonio, Texas. Congratulations Eleanor! Varsity Softball fell 4-0 to Lake Brantley to conclude their season. Now that all sports seasons have concluded, our coaches and student-athletes have had a tremendous amount of success this school year. The spring sports continued to add to our success & produced an individual state championship in Track & Field along with two district championships in Boys & Girls Water Polo and a conference championship in Boys Lacrosse. In the spring, we produced 21 First Team All-Conference Selections, 25 Second Team Selections, and a Coach of the Year honor – congratulations to Nate Kellis (Boys Lacrosse)! We also held over a cumulative 3.5 unweighted team GPA in Girls Lacrosse, Softball, Boys Tennis, Girls Tennis, Girls Track & Field, and Girls Water Polo. Across the school year, we have celebrated two state championship teams, one relay team state champion, an individual state champion, a state runner-up team, one region champion, six district champions, and seven conference champions along with 68 All- Conference First Team Selections, 59 Second Team Selections and 7 Coach of the Year Awards. We held on to the Seminole Athletic Conference All-Sports Trophy for the third year in a row, by a narrow half-point margin of victory. We finished 12th in the FHSAA State Academic Team Standings for overall team GPA. We had four student-athletes get recognized as the Seminole County Athlete of the Year, and two Florida Dairy Farmer Coach of the Year selections. We also had 39 senior student-athletes sign to play sports at the next level. Below is a breakdown of how each team finished in the FHSAA State Series Competition and in the Seminole Athletic Conference for Spring Sports. Oviedo High School Principal’s Weekly Update December 7, 2020 Currently the administration and guidance are working on the second semester master schedule. We do have 10 teachers returning to OHS from teaching SCPS students in Seminole County Virtual School. Seminole Connect will continue through second semester. Please realize that we will try our best to maintain your student’s schedule and teachers, however with the addition of 10 teachers and our goal to reduce class size, there will be changes. Thank you for understanding and working with us. At this time, please refrain from emailing the counselors unless it is immediately important as they are busy working on schedules. Our goal is to have a smooth transition in January for your student. We have an Angel Tree at OHS for our homeless students. They have asked for gift cards to Wal-Mart, Target, Publix, Ulta, and fast-food restaurants. If you are able, we’d appreciate any donations. The amount does not matter as these students appreciate any assistance. Roz Baird in the front office is collecting the gift cards this week if you are able to help. We will make sure the students receive them prior to the holiday break. Thank you! OHS is in the process of renovating portions of building 4. The district is adding an access door to the athletic training room and a door to separate the football area from the PE area. This renovation will be done by January and should not impact any classes or students.

For safety reasons, PLEASE call OHS at 407-320-4050 and make an appointment before arriving on campus unannounced. Oviedo High School Principal’s Weekly Update October 12, 2020 QUARTER #2 STARTS TODAY! A Message from Dr. Daniel - It is hard to believe that quarter one is now over, and we are moving into quarter two. Our teachers have done a phenomenal job teaching both face-to-face and Seminole Connect. As we begin quarter two, I just want to remind everyone that it is even more important for students to wear masks and socially distance especially in closed areas such as classrooms. We did have students return to campus face-to-face which increased classroom attendance. We will remain on three lunches and block schedule. Since the beginning of school, we have had two positive cases and the cases and quarantines are community acquired. This is true for OHS and for most of SCPS meaning we are working diligently to keep our campuses safe for our students and employees. I also would sincerely like to thank our families during athletic events. Thank you for socially distancing and wearing masks. This has allowed us to continue to play sports and give our students that experience. I attended several senior nights last week, and I really enjoyed celebrating our Class of 2021. Although a different kind of year, we have adjusted. The pictures were amazing and the celebrations special with cupcakes, balloons, signs, and reflections of the last four years as a Lion. I appreciate the parents that support our programs and thank you for always remembering how to celebrate our students.

We have made it through the majority of the school year despite the challenges we have faced during the pandemic. Also note that parent/teacher conferences are still being administered through WebEx for the remainder of the year. Our main school number is 407-320-4050.
