Oviedo High School Principal's Weekly Update April 5, 2021 Oviedo High School Principal’s Weekly Update April 5, 2021 Congratulations to the JV Winterguard for placing 4th at the Daytona Beach Ocean Center for FFCC State! Congratulations to the Oviedo Varsity Winterguard for placing 3rd at FFCC State! Great job and season to both teams! The Snapshot Survey is now open for parents to fill out and give feedback to OHS. Results from this survey will help us to improve our school and will be used to create a more transparent school report card called the Snapshot Report. The Snapshot Report features a snapshot of parent and student perceptions as well as other critical data points. Parents, please assist us by participating in this very short survey that will allow you to provide input in your own words about Oviedo High School. The survey will ask how likely you are to recommend our school to others and will provide an opportunity for you to tell us about your experience. Please click on the link to access the survey. 2020-2021 Parent Snapshot Link All responses are collected anonymously and no personally identifiable information will be included as a part of the survey. The survey will be open through April 25th. Summer School this year will be face to face at OHS. The summer school principal is Assistant Principal, Nancy Diaz. Ms. Diaz has been communicating via School Messenger. If you have questions, please email her at [email protected]. Any person interested in serving on next year’s School Advisory Council (SAC) should email Dr. Jason McDonald at [email protected] no later than April 16, for inclusion on the ballot. The SAC meets in the evening on the 4th Monday of the Month 8-9 times per year. OHS Athletic Boosters has board member openings for next year. If you are interested in serving, please email [email protected] The Little Lions Preschool is now registering children who will be ages 3-4 for the 2021-2022 school year. This program is operated by the Early Childhood Education program at Oviedo High School where the high school students plan and implement lessons in a working preschool. If you have a preschooler or know someone that would be interested, please contact Brittany Rogers at 407-320-4189 or [email protected] for more information and to schedule a tour. Operating hours will be Monday - Thursday 8:15-11:45 and the tuition will be $100 per month mid-October through early May. There is a $25 nonrefundable registration fee. Please note that the program fills quickly, and it is on a first come first serve basis. Ms. Davis has done an excellent job with her students on Achieve and Reading Plus. She also tutors at Boys Town and in our PRIDE program. We are proud of you! Congratulations to our Students of the Week Ms. Savage nominated Ayden Cobb for student of the week. She says, “Ayden is crazy smart, but what is so remarkable is that he is also incredibly humble. And I have never had a student who is so supportive and helpful of his peers than Ayden. Ayden is a natural teacher and is incredibly patient when helping those around him. He is literally my volunteer teaching assistant and the students in his class are lucky to have him there, as am I. He is the best academic team player I have had in all my years of teaching.” Congratulations Ayden! Ms. Krupica nominated the following students who earned their MTA (Microsoft Technology Associate) certifications: Randal Davis – Java Programming Bryn O’Donnell – Java Programming Caleb Bondar – HTML and CSS Phoebe Knudsen – HTML and CSS Benjamin Ross – HTML and CSS Athletics Update from Athletic Director Jen Darty JV softball beat Lake Brantley 15-7 in 4 innings. The team was led by Ava Gelm with a Grand Slam. Varsity fell 10-0. Boys Weightlifting competed in the SAC Championships. The team finished 7th overall. Nick Williams finished 5th in his weight class and Garrison Sonner 6th. Congratulations to Dominic Charcap who was SAC Champion in the unlimited weight class. Senior Attackman Kevin Croteau led in scoring, tallying three goals, including the game winner. Senior Midfielder Cole Gehring had one goal and the game winning assist. Senior Goalie Cody Uttich had an incredible 13 saves including 3 in overtime. The lions remain undefeated 7-0. Boys Varsity Volleyball lost 21-25, 15-25, 24-26 to Lake Mary last night. JV also fell in straight sets. Girls Lacrosse fell to Hagerty at both levels last night. Varsity lost 12-1 – junior Riley Finnegan had 10 saves in goal & sophomore Avery Anderson won 10 of 14 draw controls. JV lost 12-2 – freshmen Maddie Love scored two goals. JV Baseball won 7-6 over Lyman. Varsity Softball won 4-3 over Windermere in 10 innings. Boys Varsity Volleyball fell in five sets to Lake Howell, 25-18, 20-25, 25-21, 21-25, 11-15. JV fell in two sets. Water Polo won in the District Semifinals on both sides over Timber Creek last night. Girls won 14-8 & Boys won 19-7. Varsity Baseball won 13-4 over Lake Mary last night. TJ Wayne pitched four innings and go the win & Diego Diaz pitched three. The team had strong play by Isaiah Barkett, Kade Faircloth, Eric Day, Daniel Baez, Gian Flores, Michael DiLella, Eli Fleming, and Hudson Cullen. JV fell 9-5 to Lake Mary. Boys Varsity Lacrosse won 17-0 over Apopka. Softball won on both levels last night with JV beating Windermere 16-6 and Varsity defeating Heritage 17-1. Girls JV Lacrosse beat Lake Howell 8-0 on Wednesday night. Freshmen Annabelle Godwin and Gianna Fernandez both had two goals. Freshmen Maddy Love won 6 of 8 draw controls and gathered 8 ground balls. Boys Weightlifting competed in the District Meet and came away at 5th place. Dominic Charcap finished 1st as the Individual District Champion in his weight class, Aiden McNamara was 6th in his weight class and Bryce Lesser was 5th in his weight class.

Oviedo High School Principal’s Weekly Update January 25, 2021 PSAT/NMSQT for 9th, 10th, and 11th graders – Tuesday, January 26, 2021 On Tuesday, January 26th Oviedo High School will be administering the PSAT/NMSQT to all Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors enrolled at OHS. This includes any students currently under SCVS, Seminole Connect, or hybrid schedules. Seniors will be completing their required 5 hour Mental Health education courses at home this day through Nearpod and will receive an e-mail to their School accounts with login information. Students in grades 9 through 11 will participate in the PSAT for the entirety of the school day. Students, please remember to bring fresh number 2 pencils with good erasers, a snack, and a calculator for the PSAT. All students must provide their own calculator - both scientific and graphing calculators are permissible. If students haven’t earned their math assessment graduation requirement, they need to earn a 430 or higher on the math section of the PSAT. These students received an email notifying them of this opportunity. Earning a 430 or higher will help them be one step closer to graduation. Students will not be able to access their cellular or smart devices until after testing concludes, even during breaks. Students will be dismissed for their 30 minute lunch after the conclusion of testing. For standard time students the test will begin at 7:20 and conclude at 11:20. After lunch students will return to their testing room for study hall.

We do have 10 teachers returning to OHS from teaching SCPS students in Seminole County Virtual School. Seminole Connect will continue through second semester. Please realize that we will try our best to maintain your student’s schedule and teachers, however with the addition of 10 teachers and our goal to reduce class size, there will be changes. Thank you for understanding and working with us. At this time, please refrain from emailing the counselors unless it is immediately important as they are busy working on schedules. Our goal is to have a smooth transition in January for your student. We have an Angel Tree at OHS for our homeless students. They have asked for gift cards to Wal-Mart, Target, Publix, Ulta, and fast-food restaurants. If you are able, we’d appreciate any donations. The amount does not matter as these students appreciate any assistance. Roz Baird in the front office is collecting the gift cards this week if you are able to help. We will make sure the students receive them prior to the holiday break. Thank you! OHS is in the process of renovating portions of building 4. The district is adding an access door to the athletic training room and a door to separate the football area from the PE area. This renovation will be done by January and should not impact any classes or students.

Oviedo High School Principal’s Weekly Update November 30, 2020 Welcome back to OHS! I hope you had a fabulous Thanksgiving! We have 2 ½ weeks before exams and the end to the first semester. Half days begin December 16th through the 18th. If you have any outstanding assignments or tests, please submit those within the next two weeks. Currently the administration and guidance are working on the second semester master schedule. We do have 9 teachers returning to OHS from teaching SCPS students in Seminole County Virtual School. Thank you for understanding and working with us. On Black Friday, OHS Football played LMHS in the regional semi-final play-offs. Although OHS did not advance to the next bracket, I’d like to take this time to congratulate the team, coaches, and parents. It has been a challenging season navigating COVID and playing football. We made it through the entire season able to compete. I will miss our seniors and appreciate the time and determination they have given to OHS. I’d also like to personally thank Coach Tackett for coming to OHS to make a difference with our players. He is a positive influence, and I appreciate having him on the sidelines every Friday night.

    Oviedo High School Principal’s Weekly Update May 17, 2021 Good morning, I’d like to congratulate the Class of 2021and can’t wait to celebrate them on Wednesday! This will be the last principal’s weekly update until July. If you need me over the summer, my email is [email protected]. I will be on campus most of the summer if you need to speak to me or meet with me. There is only one message I’d like to say to everyone – Although a challenging year, I’d rather spend it here at Oviedo High School with my friends, students, colleagues, and community than anywhere else in the world. Go Lions! In order to pick up graduation tickets all senior accounts must be clear. This includes student debt, textbooks returned, and borrowed laptops returned. Thank you for helping us. Oviedo High School Principal’s Weekly Update October 12, 2020 QUARTER #2 STARTS TODAY! A Message from Dr. Daniel - It is hard to believe that quarter one is now over, and we are moving into quarter two. Our teachers have done a phenomenal job teaching both face-to-face and Seminole Connect. As we begin quarter two, I just want to remind everyone that it is even more important for students to wear masks and socially distance especially in closed areas such as classrooms. We did have students return to campus face-to-face which increased classroom attendance. We will remain on three lunches and block schedule. Since the beginning of school, we have had two positive cases and the cases and quarantines are community acquired. This is true for OHS and for most of SCPS meaning we are working diligently to keep our campuses safe for our students and employees. I also would sincerely like to thank our families during athletic events. Thank you for socially distancing and wearing masks. This has allowed us to continue to play sports and give our students that experience. I attended several senior nights last week, and I really enjoyed celebrating our Class of 2021. Although a different kind of year, we have adjusted. The pictures were amazing and the celebrations special with cupcakes, balloons, signs, and reflections of the last four years as a Lion. I appreciate the parents that support our programs and thank you for always remembering how to celebrate our students.

    Oviedo High School Principal’s Weekly Update March 22, 2021 Welcome back to the last quarter of the 2020-2021 school year! I hope you had a restful and fun spring break. We have made it through the majority of the school year despite the challenges we have faced during the pandemic. For the remainder of the year, we will be working on testing, graduation/senior activities, and next year’s schedule. Also, if you need anything from OHS, it would be better and more efficient for you to call first and/or make an appointment. With prior notice, we can gather what you need for you prior to your arrival decreasing your wait time. Also note that parent/teacher conferences are still being administered through WebEx for the remainder of the year. Our main school number is 407-320-4050. Ishika Nag represented SCPS at the Orlando Science Center's Lockheed Martin Science Challenge. At the LMSC, 1st place winners in physical science categories from eight local Regional Science Fairs face off against each other in a warm-up for the State Science and Engineering Fair later this month. This year, Ishika Nag was awarded 1st Place in Environmental Engineering! Congratulations to Ishika! We are incredibly proud of the great science research work she has done this year and her skill in showcasing those efforts to the greater community! MPA looked a little different this year. Although OHS did not participate in virtual MPA this year, we hired 3 FBA judges to come out and judge the Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble.
