The King of The Carry On Films!By SylviastelSid James was a comic genius and actor best known in England. This biography covers his life onscreen and off screen. He was happily married and dedicated father to his children. He also had affairs with his leading ladies like Barbara Windsor MBE. After his death, she opened up about their affair. It wasn't a well kept secret in the business. My theory about Barbara's take on the affair is that Sid was probably more of a mentor to her despite being married to Ronnie Knight.Everybody loved him and remained friends with him. He has a magnetic personality with a sense of humor and wisdom. He was busy acting to the end and died sadly onstage in his sixties. This biography pays tribute to one of the hardest working men in the British film industry. He earned recognition after his death. He should have been knighted by the Queen but low brow comedy isn't appreciated as the Shakespearean dramas or comedies. I'm sure most Brits would take Sid James any day over a stuffy Shakespearean actor any day. He was naturally funny without being cruel. He was also honest about leaving the Shakespeare and classical theatre to the so-called experts. He wanted to make a living to support his family rather than for the art form.Sid James should have been honoured before his death. He played the common everyday man who had a family. He appeared films in uncredited roles before the Carry On madness. Now Carry On is getting respect and he was the king of the series. We can debate about who was Queen. It is tie between Hattie Jacques and Joan Sims. To me, Barbara Windsor was the princess of the series.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. The life of Sid James, comedian and actorBy FromageSid James was very famous in England, appearing in many films, and particularly in the Carry on films. He was very funny and everyone always enjoyed watching him. His life story is most interesting - it is too bad that he died at too early an age. Everyone thinks they know the Sid James story - the wife-beating womaniser who seduced his 'Carry On' leading lady, Barbara Windsor, and drank himself to death after the affair ended. Sid was certainly a lover of the flesh - be it chorus girls or race horses - but the rumours that have enlivened hundreds of newspaper exposes fail to tell the whole story of this complex actor. At turns a quiet, even-tempered family man and the ultimate lad, this book reveals every facet of his character through never before published correspondence with his family, friends and agent Michael Sullivan, forgotten press interviews and exclusive tales from Sid's inner circle including Joan Sims (Carry On co-star), Sally Gleeson (Bless This House co-star), and scriptwriter Vince Powell, who crafted three sitcoms for Sid and made him the star of Thames Television. Sid James: The Authorised Biography reveals the actor's many sides: the war hero, the saviour of Diana Dors, the seducer of his agent's wife, the reluctant broadcaster, shrewd investor, and addicted gambler. Sid, who counts Jonathan Ross, Paul Merton, Ben Elton and Frank Skinner as loyal and devoted fans, is as popular today as he ever was. And this revealing biography will captivate anyone interested in learning more about this national treasure of comic acting.
