CALLING ALL YOUNG CRICKETERS IN YEARS 11 & 12 plus ALL SENIOR PLAYERS

In line with the latest social distancing guidelines, Craig Peterson is putting together a coaching package which will enable up to 6 persons at a time to be coached but before finalising this, he wishes to gauge interest.

If you ARE interested in participating, please contact Craig who will be happy to send you full details. His email address is [email protected] or contact him on his mobile number which is 07769 636667.

Our Junior Section Managers – Dave Peterson and Ivan Veall – are looking at the possibility of commencing limited junior coaching sessions and further news on this will be forthcoming at a later date.

We have received the ECB’s Return to Recreational Cricket Roadmap which makes it very clear that the chances of a normal 11-a-side game of cricket this summer are close to non-existent. This is because the current social distancing restrictions are for groups of 6 people and whilst we would all love it to get to groups of 24+ that would allow us to play the game as we all want to, this seems very unlikely. However, the chances of group size restrictions going to 12 or 16 are hopefully much better, which would allow for some ‘adapted gameplay’ whether that is 6-a-side, 8-a- side etc. This might lend itself more to junior cricket but I am sure a number of senior teams would be keen for cricket in whatever form they can. Your club is actively considering all options.

UMPIRING CHALLENGE

Working in partnership with the ECB and Bucks Association of Cricket Umpires (ACO), Bucks Cricket Board has created a challenge for clubs across which aims to engage with the network's competitive spirit! The ECB has recently released a free online version of the Stage 1 Umpiring course - which has already seen over 2000 sign ups nationally. We've set a challenge to clubs to see who can get the most members signed up through the course over the coming weeks. We will publish 'league tables' regularly across our social media channels and will award prizes for the top performing clubs!

To get involved all you need to do is:

1. Sign up for the course here 2. Ensure your club is selected when prompted in the registration page 3. Complete the course once you receive the access to the e-Learning portal (the course takes 3-4 hours to complete and can be done in bite sized chunks!) 4. Encourage your team mates and fellow club members to do the same!

If you have any specific umpiring queries please contact Yolanda at [email protected]

And so we move along to the second half of the 1930s.

1935

Ley Hill were runners-up in Division 1. Their highest team score in 1935 was 140 runs, scored against the British Legion away and lowest team score was just 39 runs at home against .

Highest individual score was by Reg Plested, who scored 52 runs in the British Legion match and best bowling figures came from – guess who – Reg Plested with 6 wickets for 11 runs against Bois at home. Reg’s 52 was the first 50 plus score since 1929 and only the fourth time a Ley Hill player had made it into the fifties.

In the home game against Holmer Green, Geoff Keen took a hat-trick, and Horace Brown scored an all-run 7, having hit the ball onto the golf course (no boundary on the road side in those days. You just kept running until the ball was thrown back and declared dead).

1936

Press coverage of the local league appeared to diminish as time went on, but the Championship match at the end of the season was between Holmer Green (winners Division 1) and (winners Division 2). Won by Holmer.

Out of the 13 matches which have been located, Ley Hill won 10 of them and one (against Bellingdon at home) was tied. Ley Hill’s highest score was 132 runs against away and their lowest was 30 runs against Temple End away. Highest individual score was F. Gomm with 56 runs against Chesham Bois away and best bowling came from Geoff Keen with 7 wickets for 7 runs, taken at Bellingdon.

1937

Division 1 champions were Holmer Green, with Ley Hill as runners-up. Thirteen games were reported in the local press, out of which Ley Hill were victors on 5 occasions.

Highest team score was 136 runs against Lye Green at home and lowest just 39 runs against . Highest individual score was 60 runs by Reg Plested scored in the Lye Green match, and best bowling figures came from – guess who – Reg Plested yet again with 6 wickets for 14 runs taken against Buckland Common when they visited Ley Hill.

1938

The end of season Championship match was between Holmer Green (winners Division 1) and & (Division 2).

Twelve match reports have been located for Ley Hill, of which they won 8. Their highest score was against Bellingdon away (143 runs) and their lowest was 43 runs which they were bowled out on twice – once by Holmer Green away and once by at home.

Highest individual score for the season came from Stan Channer, who scored 53 not out in the match against Bellingdon already mentioned, and best bowling was from Stan again, who took 8 wickets for 15 runs against away.

1939

Not once did the local press bother to publish a league table, and the only information I have managed to locate is that Holmer Green were once again champions of Division 1 for the fifth year in succession.

A record of 12 matches can be found for Ley Hill, out of which they won 6. Highest team score was 113 runs against Chartridge at home and lowest team score just 5 runs against Temple End away. Best individual batting came from W. Dwight with 16 runs against Lye Green away and best bowling from George Plested with 7 wickets for 4 runs in the Lye Green match.

Although the Chesham & District Cricket League did function in 1940, it had only 7 teams taking part (not including Ley Hill) and had shrunk to one division. The end of the 1939 season brought the curtain down on cricket on Ley Hill Common for 10 years and I have already reported on the efforts of players to renovate the pitch so that it was fit for cricket again. This recommenced in 1949.

Until next week, stay safe everyone.
