SPECIAL MOMENTS... SPECIAL MEMORIES... SPECIAL MISSION!

When something “special” happens in your game and / or life journey, a “special” mem- ory is stored in your right brain. When “special” happenings occur time and time again, the brain warehouses a magnetic gallery of unique experiences. If a recurring theme or common foundation of these images is evident, a vision / goal is often established that can quickly turn into a specific and “special” mission for one’s life focus. I have enjoyed numerous special moments / memories in my personal billiard jour- ney. My initial cue sport experience occurred at the age of 10 in 1959 with my first job as a “ boy” at Elsie’s Pool Room in Minonk, IL. Then from 1967-1972 exposure to higher-level play in both pool and carom (3 cushion) took place at the college level. Special game challenges at the professional level from the early 1970’s until present day, including ESPN and WPA sanctioned events, fine-tuned a special joy I discovered both on and off the table, regardless of the final win-loss paper tallies. In 2010 I made a decision to be more open for outreach ministry as an expression of an overwhelming “theme of joy” for the game (and life) inspired by 40+ years of career centered entertainment shows using “trick shots and so much more”, plus a myriad of special teaching engagements – all with a “twist of humor”! Coupled with a solid foundational base for the game (and life) from Elsie’s and a supernatural billiard industry vision revealed to me in 1984 called the RACK Vision, a special mission for enhancing the billiard industry (and beyond) and for developing RACK Rooms worldwide evolved. Select mission stops have included: a special billiard venue station in the desert country two hours north of Cairo, Egypt; pool rooms in the jungles of Honduras; an assortment of pool room venues in Asia including a Philippines chicken coop (written about in previous articles); recreational centers / youth group fellowships and churches in the US and Canada; plus in November of 2017 – a heartfelt sharing of the “joy of billiards” in the Middle East. Following is a short story about this latter outreach: Building Bridges with Billiards in the Middle East Chaplain Steve Lillis with Gospel Ministries, Inc. and Tom “Dr. Cue” Rossman with Dr. Cue Promotions toured the Middle East for over two weeks (11/8 - 22, 2017) to help build bridges in the name of Jesus using a special “joy of the heart” message applied to the wonderful sport of billiards. Four war torn countries were visited includ- ing Lebanon, Jordan, Palestine, and Israel. A total of 13 Gospel Trick Shot shows were performed with 2 teaching clinics that included national billiards teams. Shows were done on American pool tables, English and Canadian tables, a carom table, and a Russian table. Also included in the trip was a Holy Land visit with Muslim, Jewish, and Christian tour guides. Steve and Tom were special guest performers for the Arab Championships in Beirut, Lebanon, which included national teams from 16 Arab nations. In Israel they did a live TV interview, a Gospel Trick Shot show, and a teaching clinic for members of the Israeli billiard team. They also spoke at a Messianic Christian Church and helped start two Billiard Bible study groups in two different billiard rooms which are now called RACK Rooms (Recreational Ambassadors for Christ’s Kingdom) with one in Lebanon and the other in Israel. Travel was challenging as transportation was provided by 9 private cars, 7 taxis, 4 buses, 6 planes, all of which included travel through 20 military security checkpoints. Steve and Tom are also McDermott Ambassadors and McDermott cue sticks were brought and distributed as gifts to some of their special hosts and friends. Special thanks to all of our billiard friends across the region who helped build bridges across different cultural, religious, ethnic, and national backgrounds. Billiards is alive and well in the Middle East and is a strong bond to bring people together.

Tom and Steve went as men of peace with cue sticks in hand with the message of Jesus who is the Prince of Peace! (End of story) The “special” mission of bringing a message of “joy” to the billiard industry continued on December 4, 2017 when another special moment in billiard history took place at the BCA (Billiard Con- gress of America) Hall of Fame induction ceremony in Las Vegas, NV. I was humbled and honored to be selected this year and am thankful for this “special” blessing God has given me, once again to be used for the higher mission purpose. Special thanks to everyone for his or her heartfelt support and encouragement to Marty (Ms. Cue) and me over the years! May each of you discover and / or follow a special mission in your life’s journey that brings you love, joy, hope, and peace... which I encourage you to share with others until next time (and beyond) when... 16 8-Ball News & Views Billiards With Briesath Self-Help Check-Ups That Work

By Jerry Briesath

Whether you’re a Beginner, a Novice or an Advanced Pro, it is smart to do a few self check-ups on your fundamentals once in awhile. When players go into a slump it is usually mechanics that are the prob- lem. Every player has those days where they just get a little bit lazy handling the and make a few mistakes at the table that can ruin a good league night. One of the most important self-checks is placing the cue ball on the spot and placing an object ball somewhere down the table. Now shoot the shot and freeze in that position and see if the cue stick is dead center across the spot with a follow-through of 4 to 6 inches. If the cue is not perfectly straight across that spot, don’t expect the white ball to go straight. The next thing to check for on the same shot is if the cue tip ended up level or lower than you struck the cue ball. The cue tip should never end up higher than you struck the cue ball. If it does end up higher it means you are dropping the elbow during the follow-through which is not good. Now let’s talk about shooting the cue ball off the rail. When shooting the cue ball off the rail the shaft must remain touching the rail through the follow through. If the shaft comes off the rail it means you are dropping the elbow and taking a big chance on miscuing over the top of the ball. And finally, when you are shooting the cue ball quite a bit below center for a stop or draw shot, it is important that when the shot is finished the cue tip is on the cloth. If the cue-tip is not on the cloth it means that you dropped your elbow again and probably hit the ball higher than you wanted to. Please check out my DVD at poollessons.com. It has more than 50 topics similar to above that will definitely help you with your pool game.

22 8-Ball News & Views 6 Skill Levels For A Fair Playing Surface For ALL

1) Sports Division... Established to prove our commitment in creating competition and prize money for those not able to effectively compete in the Regular Division.

2) Redemption Division... Created to fill the void where players drop off the loser’s side of the bracket after it is too late to enter the Sports Division and before they make any money in the Regular Division.

3) Regular Division... Targeted for the everyday, fun-loving league player who dreams of the opportunity to attend an International Championship to experience this pool frenzy with fellow pool players around the World and find a very fair and competitive playing surface.(Intermediate & Master players will not be allowed to participate in the Regular Division) (Exception: One (1) Intermediate FEMALE will be allowed to play on an Open Regular Team)

4) Resurrection Division... A second chance for Master & Intermediate players to take home some cash in this highly competitive division.

5) Intermediate Division... Targeted for the average to above average league player who may have some Tour- nament level experience. Players looking for an awesome week of pool camaraderie with avid players around the World and an excellent opportunity, second to none, to compete against similar talented teams in an effort to earn great prize money, titles and incredible memories. This awesome field and super payouts filled with spectacular matches right out of the gate eliminates those Regular Division early round scares and losses to less talented teams. (With only one Master player allowed on a team, all teams will be equally favored.)

6) Masters Division... Targeted at the accomplished pool players who want to test their skills against the best in the World and to gain valuable experience that is nearly impossible to obtain elsewhere.

TEAM OPENING CEREMONIES is one of the most anticipated parties of the event! On the Monday before Teams begin, the VNEA throws a party to recognize the previous weeks Singles Champions and the upcom- ing Team competition. 3,000 excited pool players rock the rear parking lot of Bally’s Hotel & Casino and celebrate and relax before another big week of play. The evening starts with our traditional PARADE OF FLAGS where each country in attendance marches to the stage for the playing of their national anthems. This is followed by the SINGLES & SCOTCH DOUBLES AWARDS PRESENTATIONS. Once all of the Charlie’s have been handed out for the evening, the annual HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES are introduced. Shortly thereafter, the evening’s entertainment kicks into gear and the ICE COLD BEER and good times be- gin! The players dance the evening away enjoying the time together with their teammates and making many new friends in the process. What a great night and wonderful tradition for the VNEA and its players! VIVA LAS VEGAS!

January • 2018 25 VNEA Professionals... Instruction, Trick Shots, Entertaining Shows

JERRY BRIESATH has long been considered the very best Billiards Instructor in the business. His decades of experience make Jerry one of the most sought after teachers in our sport today. Jerry has also recently released a “3 DVD Set” which contains 4.5 hours of priceless pool lessons which he shares with our players each and every year at the Vegas AND Junior World Pool Championships. Jerry has spent count- less hours at our events teaching our players everything from the proper stance and stroke to the “diamond system”. He loves to teach and it shows by the smiling faces that surround his table. And his “one-on-one” teaching approach has proven to be his trademark as players get that spe- cial attention and hands-on training that pool requires. Jerry has always said, “Come see me and let me help you improve your game”.

TOM “DR. CUE” ROSSMAN is a World Renown “Artistic Pool” Champion. Tom introduced “Artistic Pool” to the VNEA nearly 30 years ago and has been entertaining and challenging our players ever since. Tom is also a staple at both our Vegas and Junior Championships and brings an incredible amount of excitement and FUN to the game of pool by adding his own “comedic flair” to everything he does! Tom’s sense of humor is legendary and he includes it in whatever he does from teaching to trick shots to challenge matches. Although Tom is known for his amazing trick shot artistry and hilarious shows, he is also one of the most knowledgable instructors in the business with a pure grasp on the “diamond system” which he beautifully translates to our lucky players. You will never meet a nicer and more genuine man than Tom Rossman.

DAVE “GINGER WIZARD” PEARSON burst on to the American scene nearly 20 years when he brought his fast-paced game of “Speed Pool” to the VNEA and its players. A Master of Speed Pool, Dave holds several Guinness World Records for his rapid-paced racks! Dave played professionally in England prior to coming to the states and is truly one of the most remarkably skilled pool players in the world. He also is a huge sponsor of both our Vegas and Junior Championships and actually donates his own brand of cues (GW Cues) to both events making Dave one of the most generous professionals in our sport. When you see Dave at his booth in Las Vegas, be sure to go up and say hello. There are 3 things that you can be sure of... you will be greeted with a smile, you will learn something and you will walk away with a smile on your face!

Each year we all donate to different causes. With the support of VNEA, Simonis Cloth and Aramith Balls, I have decided to do a special event. Your donations will benefit Children’s Cancer Research, Wounded Warriors and VNEA’s own Junior Pool Program. In this economy, money can be tight, but we all find a way to help the less fortunate than we are. I am asking you to dig a little deeper and donate $20 to these (3) great Charities. Here is the link to make your donation: Paypal.Me/GWcares/20 For every donation, you will receive a special We Care Pin and your name will be automatically put in a drawing for a chance to win these great prizes... • One-Of-A-Kind Valley Home Pool Table • (5) Nights Accommodation At Bally’s • World Record Attempting Cue Stick (signed & dated) • Gift Cards For Major Retail Chains

All Donations Receive A We Care Pin!

At the 2018 VNEA World Championships in Las Vegas, I will be attempting to beat the “10 Table” World Record! I have to run 10 racks, making the 8-Ball last, in under 8 minutes, 57.1 seconds. The event will be at Bally’s and will be the “Party of all Parties!” A Huge We Care Party! Imagine what we can achieve with all of the money WE raise! WE will help children with cancer and also the heart of our nation... Wounded Warriors, who help make this great country safe. Last but not least, VNEA, who has been supporting kids for over 30 years. Too many kids just sit on the couch... let’s get them out and enjoying pool! We will put this event in the magazine every issue and ask you to share this on Facebook with your friends and families. I am very proud to do this. It makes me feel good if we can all be a part of something special. Thank You For All Your Support...
