On this day in Rovers history… Kempston are quite successful on this date, recording an 11-1 victory at home against Letchworth Town in 1909 and another 11-1 win away at Godmanchester Rovers in 1926. More recently, there was a 7-0 win away at Northampton ON Chenecks in 2010. The last game played on this date was in 2012 which was a 2-1 home win over Deeping Rangers. This game represents Kempston’s only home league game of the month of October, owing much to the various cup runs that the club is enjoying. Last week’s dramatic late win at Aylesbury saw Kempston balance their league record at three wins and three defeats, Jermaine Hall will be looking to add to his hat-trick against Barton in the Trophy earlier this month against his former club. Barton, not in cup action at the weekend, hosted the only game played in our league on Saturday, going down three nil to early promotion favourites Bromsgrove. Kempston Rovers 135 years of Football History

Kempston Rovers were formed in 1884 and entered the Bedford & District League. Rover’s first league championship was won in 1908 and twelve months later Rover’s retained the title while also carrying off the Bedfordshire Senior Cup and North Beds Charity Cup. The Walnut Boys, the club’s official nickname, comes from the large walnut orchard in Kempston around the time of foundation. This identity is carried forward by one of the main supporters’ groups at the club, “The Nuts on Tour”. 1973 saw the start of a new era as Kempston relocated to a new ground further down Hillgrounds Road. A magnificent season saw the Walnut Boys storm to the Premier title losing only once in 32 games. A golden period in the club's history saw League Cup successes in 1975 and 1977; the Beds Senior Cup was again captured in 1977 while the Walnut Boys reached the last 16 of the FA Vase in 1975. In 1986, the club moved again, this time to the current ground, their third in the same road. Kempston last won the county’s highest honour, the Beds. Senior Cup, in 1992, the fourth time the trophy has come to Hillgrounds. In 2002 Kempston Rovers and Kempston Colts began an alliance to pool resources/personnel under the name AFC Kempston. The youth teams at Rovers still go by the name “Colts”, keeping the history of youth football in the town alive. The beginning of 2005 saw the start of major re-developments at Hillgrounds Road with the building of new changing facilities and the building of an artificial training pitch, which is available to book all year round for training sessions, small sided games or just a kick around with friends. The new ground facilities were completed in 2006 and along with a new stand; on-going ground improvements and the existing clubhouse refurbished and ready to hire for functions and events, Kempston now have some of the best facilities in the area for non-league football. Midway through the 2013-14 season James Stoyles and Gary Flinn took over the 1st Team managerial duties before, in 2015-16, Rovers won the United Counties Football League Premier Division, with a thrilling final win on the last day of the season, a campaign in which they only lost one league game. This resulted in promotion and saw us move into the Southern League Division One which represents the highest level we have attained within the FA pyramid system so far. Since promotion, the club has twice narrowly missed out on a place in the end of season promotion play offs. On both occasions, finishing above some of the more established sides in the division. The club currently operates one of the largest youth systems in the county, with over thirty sides at various age groups and a senior development side. There is a supporters’ club that holds various functions throughout the season to support the first team.

Barton Rovers have their home in Barton-le-Clay, a village of some 5000 people just north of Luton. Formed in 1898 the club played in inter village football for the first 50 years until 1946 when they reformed and joined the Luton & District League. Progress was such that in 1954 they were accepted into the South Midlands League. They enjoyed only limited success until 1964 when former Leicester City and Luton Town defender Barry Reed joined the club as manager. After winning promotion to the Premier Division in 1964 65 the club was never out of the top three until leaving the league in 1979, winning the title eight seasons out of nine and making a clean sweep in their final season the Premier Division title, the Senior Section Challenge Trophy, the Reserve Division title and the Reserve Section Challenge Trophy the only time this has been achieved to date. In 1976 the club entered the FA Vase for the first time and went to the quarterfinals before losing to Farnborough Town. The following year it was one step better with a Semi final appearance against Sheffield. 1978 saw the pinnacle reached with a crowd of 16,391 watching the Final at Wembley where Barton Rovers lost 1 2 to Blue Star of Newcastle. In 1979 The Rovers gained election to the then isthmian league. In their first season they finished a credible 8th. In 1980 81 this was improved to fourth and the same position was repeated in 1981 82, when the club also enjoyed another good Vase run reaching the Rainworth MW 1 2 on aggregate. At the end of the 1982 83 season Barry Reed retired having achieved the clubs highest position of 3rd. He had also fulfilled his greatest wish to see Barton Rovers play in the First Round proper of the FA Cup, which was achieved in 1980 when the Rovers lost 0 2 to Torquay United at Plainmoor. The club had to settle for mid table obscurity as three managers guided the Rovers through a transitional period in the mid 80's. In season 1990 91, Rovers qualified for the new Division Two, for Manager Mick Huckle that was his final game in charge after five years, as he retired to step up to General Manager. After an unspectacular 1991/192 season with firstly Ray Brandon and then Tony Dumigan in charge a new man was appointed in May 1992 he was Brian Williams who had been one of the most successful non league managers in the area. Unfortunately his success was limited to cup competitions with the Rovers having their best FA Vase run for seven years, eventually failing to, Wembley finalists Tiverton Town from the Great Mills Western League in The 4th Round. The semi final of the Bedfordshire Premier Cup was also reached but the most notable success came in the Isthmian Associate Members Trophy where the Rovers reached the final of an Isthmian League competition for the first time in their history. Despite a 3 1 extra time defeat against Northwood it was an achievement that lit up the reins, retaining Gordon Brown as his coach. May 1993 saw the appointment of Gordon Taylor. His first season at Sharpenhoe Road saw him guide the Rovers to 4th spot, the club's highest position since 1983, behind runaway leaders and big spenders Newbury Town, Chertsey Town and Aldershot Town. This platform was built upon in season 1994-95, and Gordon Taylor successfully steered the Rovers into Runners up position behind Champions Thame United. But to leave it there would hide the real success story of the season. It was realised at Christmas that the Clubs financial position was precarious to say the least, and drastic action was needed, initially to cut costs. With the team riding high in the table, and the very realistic chance of promotion, if not the Championship, lying ahead the decision to cut the playing budget to nil was not an easy one, but a necessary evil to ensure the Club'ssurvival. This body blow has destroyed many a club before but the loyalty shown by the manager Gordon Taylor, and the bulk of the playing squad, cannot be disputed. Their response had to be seen to be believed. Playing the best football of the season they subsequently swept to nine straight victories, eight in the league that put Barton back on top of the table, scoring 30 goals and conceding just 4. Only one victory in March allowed the chasing pack to make up ground, but a return to form in April culminated in promotion being gained in the penultimate match. BARTON ROVERS FC History Part 2 No praise can be too high for the achievement of the management and players, who after all the adversity, took Barton Rovers into the First Division of the Isthmian League for the first time ever, after 16 seasons of membership of the League. The elevation also saw the Rovers join the top 176-non league clubs in the country in the FA Trophy. With subsequent cuts being made to the clubs running costs, and increase in revenue from sponsorship, the club was once again heading in the right direction. Barton's first season in Division One was not an easy one as the club struggled on to finds it's feet in the higher division, but lessons were learnt from the early setbacks, and by December the tide was turned and the Rovers hoisted themselves clear of the danger zone. Barton also reached the finals of both county cups, where they met Bedford Town twice. Bedford took the honours in the Senior Cup, winning 1-0. Barton then won the Premier Cup 1-0 on aggregate. Tony McNally scoring the only goal 11 minutes from the end of the second leg at Sharpenhoe Road. Season 1996 97 saw Barton top the Division One table twice in September. However a run of seven matches without a win saw Manager Gordon Taylor tender his resignation in October 1996 after three and a quarter years in charge, despite the club still being in a healthy position in the top half of the table. Former Manager Mick Huckle took over the reins with former Coach Ben Harrison on a temporary basis while interviews took place. As a result of these the Club selected Gordon Brown as their new Manager. The transitional period that followed saw a run of 13 games without a win until a vital 2.1 success at fellow strugglers Canvey Island in February 1997. With the "duck “broken and a settled side now back in place, results improved and the Rovers pulled themselves away from the danger zone. On the penultimate Saturday of the season with a 3 - 1 home win over doomed Tooting & Mitcham United, and a win at Molesey on the last day to be absolutely sure. As in the previous season, Barton lifted some silverware. This time it was the in the form of the Anglia TV 5 a side Championship. Manager Gordon Brown hoped his second season would see his team improve within their new found level. This was achieved in season 1997 98 with a new record finish of 16th. The Rovers also had their best run in the FA Cup for 17 years, reaching the 3rd Qualifying Round with wins over Hassocks, Clapton and Windsor & Eton before Braintee Town ended the growing dreams of another 1st Round Proper appearance. Barton also reached the final of the Bedfordshire Senior Cup for the 11th time, and Manager Gordon Brown departed to coach in the US for a year with the cup secured thanks to a 4 0 victory over Potton United. The Club appointed Gordon's successor in April 1998, on his own recommendation, in former Arsenal and Luton Town player lan Allinson, who was manager at United Counties League club Stotfold. Another record season was recorded, with 15th a new positional high. To cap a memorable season Barton reached three cup finals. The Bedfordshire Senior Cup was retained with a 3 - 0 win over Bedford Town, in a final played at Bedford Town FC and the South Midlands Floodlight Cup was won for the first time, with a 1 - 0 win over Hemel Hempstead Town, again on the opponents ground. Barton missed out on a cup treble, losing the Hinchingbrooke Cup Final, which they had reached in their first season, by 2 - 1 to Spalding United. 1999-2000 saw an excellent start by the club with Rovers in third spot on Christmas day. However, two defeats over the festive period by local rivals Bedford Town and bottom club Chertsey Town brought Ian Allinson’s shock resignation to join Harlow Town. Ian Donnelly was promoted from assistant to take over the reins, and the club consolidated to record it’s highest ever league finish with a final place of 12th. In addition to this Barton Rovers reached the semi- final of the League Cup losing over two legs to Farnborough Town. With the club suffering a poor start to the next season Ian Donnelly was replaced by Noel Blackwell, who had been assistant Manager at Stevenage Borough. Noel was also a former Barton Player from the 1980’s but his reign was brief lasting just 17 days in September. Bartons third manager in as many months was Alan Biley, the former Everton, Derby county and Cambridge player. BARTON ROVERS FC History Part 3 Alan was appointed in October 2000 but resigned to take over Diss Town 4 months later. Dick Newman took over, steadied the ship, but had the job of rebuilding the Rovers following their relegation back to Division Two With no relegation taking place due to the forthcoming league restructuring, the club took the opportunity to bring forward some of the younger players from it’s youth academy to give them invaluable first team experience. Although the average age of the side was probably the youngest in the division, the team managed to finish in 14th place in the table. This young team also reached the final of the Bedfordshire Senior Cup and won the Hinchingbrooke Cup for the first time with a 2-0 victory over Yaxley. Immediately after this final match of the season, Dick Newman informed the club of his decision to resign to take up a post with Potton United. However this shock news was tempered by the fact that former manager, Ian Allinson, had left Harlow and agreed to return to Sharpenhoe Road for a second spell in charge, continuing the progress of the young players which had begun the previous season. Season 2002/03 saw another period of consolidation with several young players making the grade, Notably striker Drew Roberts, who coming through from the youth side set the league “alight” with some great goals before moving on to Bedford Town. Ian continued to mould a side on a tight budget with yet more youth players to come through, hopes were high for this season. In January Ian decided to try his luck elsewhere and so he left to join Boreham wood on good terms after 18 months with us in his second spell. The club moved fast in finding a replacement and by the following Saturday it had appointed former players Gordon Guile and Graham Golds from Harpenden Town as joint player/managers. The club started the new season in the Southern league following the restructure full of confidence as the rebuilding continued. Unfortunately in early October Gordon found that work commitments meant that he could no longer give his full commitment to the club as manager, and he stepped down. The club moved quickly again and moved coach and former manager Gordon Taylor up into the management “hot seat”. They also appointed long-term player and club captain Tony Mcnally as player coach, and they continued to keep the club together and moving in the right direction. After a season that saw the team consolidate it’s position in the league, and the departure of top goal scorer Paul Barnes to A.F.C. Wimbledon for a club record fee the season ended with a second Hinchingbrooke Cup win and the final retirement of stalwart Tony Mcnally. The club then regretfully accepted the resignation of manger Gordon Taylor. With a view to the future the club appointed youth team manager Kevin Thoburn as General manager and the vastly experienced Neil Rodney as coach and the job of rebuilding the team went on with the team looking very impressive in the pre-season period. The period after Kevin Thorburn’s departure has somewhat been a transition of turning old way’s into new. Manager Gary Fitzgerald took charge during the 2007/8 Season, Gary was the youngest manager to ever take charge of the Rovers team. The 2007/8 season was a season looked at many by trying to achieve stability after the previous regime. The season ended in the Rovers finishing in a comfortable position in the league, safe from any relegation battle. The following season Gary Fitzgerald was still at the helm, his passion and knowledge of the non-league game guided Barton to safety once again. For a team that has such a small population, playing football in the Southern League is somewhat of an achievement in itself, Gary Fitzgerald was building a young and vibrant squad by the end 2008/9 Season. Former Luton Town player Ross Hanley had a superb season, winning the player of the season award. Fitzgerald believed in youth and the performances by Hanley were second to none.

The 2009/10 Season witnessed Gary Fitzgerald’s third season in charge of the club. This season was to be a struggle, however there were many highlights along the way. In the league the club battled with relegation throughout the season, and had to await news on a reprieve which gladly came in the summer of 2010. BARTON ROVERS FC History Part 4 Barton Rovers played some fantastic football throughout the season and the lads battled till the end. Even in such a tough season there were some outstanding individuals, Centre-back Paul Andrews developed into a no-nonsense defender and Tommy Hull a combatitive midfielder had a fine regime. The club enjoyed a great run in The FA Trophy, beating Ryman Premier side Horsham on the way. The start of the 2010/11 season saw Barton Rovers in the Southern Football League, this time in the newly created Central Division. Gary Fitzgerald departed the club after four seasons in charge due to an unconvincing start to the season and was replaced with Dan Kennoy. Dan was recruited from neighbours Arlesey Town where he held a coaching position with their first team. At 30 years of age the former Rovers player, managed to assemble a vibrant squad that ended the season in a solid 12th position in the Southern League Central division. One of the plum results in his first season was the 2-1 away win at promoted Hitchin Town. The 2010/11 season also saw the introduction of a Reserve Team, some 15 years after Barton Rovers Reserves kicked their last ball. Darren Whiley was charged with the responsibility of filtering players through to the 1st team and competing in the Suburban Football League. A solid 13th placed finish in the first season justified the decision to reintroduce a reserve team to the senior setup. Richard Wilmot was awarded the Players Player of the Year award, Sam Spencer was awarded Player of the Year and Andre Maltay picked up the Supporters Player of the Year. The 2011/12 season saw Dan Kennoy retain a majority of the squad so the season started with an air of optimism. It's fair to say that it didn't quite go as planned. Just four points from the opening nine games and an FA Cup defeat to lowly Hatfield Town and the young manager was started to fill the pressure. Then just one defeat in the next nine league games saw the confidence rise as well as the Rovers league position. Some convincing results continued notably the 5-1 away win at Chertsey Town and a 4-0 home win against Chalfont St Peter and the play off places were starting to look achievable. The final quarter of the season unfortunately ended the same as the season started and with only 13 points from the last 30 available the season ended with a league position of 11th place which meant a top half of the table finish, something that hasn't happened since 2005. Ricky Case and Tommy Hull cleaned up with the first team awards, Ricky taking the Players Player award and Top goal scorer with 14 goals. Tommy took home the Player of the Year and Supporters Player of the Year. Niran Vaughan was awarded the Young Player of the Year trophy. Kennoy stayed on for another crack at the helm in 2012/13 guiding the side to a respectable mid table finish. Some success in both FA cup and Trophy with the season ending with silverware in the shape of the North Beds Charity Cup. Arguably Rovers under the stewardship of Kennoy had its best season for many years in 2013/14. Flirting in the play off places all season before finishing 6th with a last day of the season defeat which saw the side miss out on the play offs by just 3 points. The clubs highest league position in its history was coupled by back to back North Beds Charity Cup success. Following Dan Kennoy’s decision to stand down at the end of the season 2014/15 saw new managers at the helm in the shape of former players Richard Wilmot and Wes Byrne. The season bettered the previous with Wilmot and Byrne achieving a club best of play off finalist beaten by Bedworth Utd 2-0 but the going on to lift the Beds Senior cup with an emphatic 4-0 victory over Biggleswade Town at Kenilworth Rd. The 2015-16 season yet another a new management team of Matt Endersby and Jon Reed taking the reigns to push the small village outfit to bigger things. Sadly the season was a right off with neither manager staying to the end of the campaign but the club did manage to retain the Beds FA senior cup with a 2-1 win overs AFC Dunstable. Former player Jimmy Gray takes over in the Sharpenhoe Rd hot season for the promotion chase in 2016/17. Jimmy will be assisted by Mark Boyce whist Keith West stays on as coach. Again its as close as it can be but no cigar as Rovers lose in the play off final in an enthralling match v Farnborough. The two nil loss did not reflect the game but goals are all that matter. Barton regroup for 2017-18, Mark Boyce moved up to the hot seat for the early part of the season but after a poor run of results was replaced after 16 games by ex Dunstable Town manager and a former Barton player Tony Fontanelle. By Matthew Wilmot Dereham 1 – 3 Kemspton Rovers

Kempston arrived in for their third away game in a week across three different competitions to face a Dereham Town side that boasted Joe Gatting in their starting line-up, nephew of cricket ace Mike Gatting. The home side were nearly stumped after just thirty six seconds as the Magpies’ defence appealed for offside against Josh Crawley as the Rovers hitman bore down on goal, possibly believing himself to have been in an offside position, Crawley’s effort lacked his usual gusto and it was safely fielded by Pride in the home goal. Gatting then had a chance at the other end, put through by a long ball, his long range lobbed effort drifted wide to the boundary. Twenty minutes were on the clock when Rovers broke the deadlock. Nathan Tshikuna twisted and turned in midfield before twitching the ball through to Luke Heneghan on the edge of the area, the midfielder turned and fired a shot into the top corner of the net. Just three minutes later and Rovers were convinced they should have had a penalty, Shane Bush was pollaxed from behind in the area in an aerial dual, resulting in him needing treatment for injury as the Dereham defender came straight through the back of him. With the ball bouncing loose in the area, the referee immediately stopped play for the head injury. With the entire crowd waiting for the spot kick to be awarded, no one could quite believe that the game was re-started with a drop ball ten yards away from the penalty area. Bouyed by their lucky escape, Dereham began to threaten. Beaumont hit the post with a long range free kick ten minutes before the break before he was threaded through on goal to lift the ball calmly over the on rushing Martin Conway to equalise. Ebbage had a late chance to put the hosts ahead from a corner, but hit the ball over the bar and clean out of the ground. The second half began with Hipperson snatching at a chance at the near post for Dereham before his side hit the bar with a header from a corner. Gatting then had a glorious chance from a long ball, but Conway smothered his effort before the hour. From then on, it was one way traffic as far as creating chances was concerned, Tshikuna hit the post after a neat team build up on the edge of the Dereham box, Daniel Akubuine headed over after a late run into the box to get on the end of sub Robbie Goodman’s cross. Akubuine then had a clearer chance with fifteen minutes to play, getting a lucky break off the defender and surging into the box. Pride was out smartly to smother the danger at his feet. The home side appeared to be flagging late on in the face of the pace of Rovers attacking threat and with ten minutes left, Rovers hit the front again; substitute Benjamin Acquaye threaded a ball into the feet of Luke Heneghan and from the edge of the box, the midfielder curled a beauty into the far corner of the net for his sixth of the season. The dust had barely settled from those celebrations when Kempston made sure of the result. Nathan Tshikuna intercepted a pass and surged forward, spotting runners in space, he weighted the perfect through ball for Acquaye to meet and sweep underneath the advancing keeper. In the dying embers of the game, Tshikuna, Acquaye and Goodman all combined beautifully down the right hand side to put a cross in for Ty Deacon, the forward couldn’t make proper contact with the cross however and what could’ve been the goal of the game wasn’t to be. Kempston advance to the next round while some dissenting voices from the home contingent were asking serious questions of their management. Kempston return to league action at home on Tuesday night with a local derby against Barton Rovers, by which time Kempston will have learnt who they are to face in the next Match Report What might have been

By Matthew Wilmot Woking FC 3 – 2 Kempston Rovers Rovers arrived in Surrey on the back of their best run in the FA Cup in thirty eight years to face a Woking side, joint top of the Conference South in possibly the biggest game the club has had in it’s history. The first real chance of the game came after thirteen minutes, as a short corner from Woking was laid back to Jamar Loza, who cut back and fired at goal, only to see his effort blaze over the bar. Five minutes later, Kretzchmer slid in to get on the end of a Hodges cross, to be denied by Martin Conway. As the game approached the half hour mark, Kyal McNulty was forced into a last ditch clearance to stop a Woking forward from pulling the trigger. Alex Collard then bravely headed a corner off the line before Jake Hyde flashed a close range effort wide at the near post. Woking were well on top, but Kempston were holding firm. Ten minutes before the break, Rovers had their first chance of the half, a long free kick was pumped into the box and fell to the feet of Alex Collard. The defender couldn’t keep his effort down and flashed it over the bar from a tight angle. Conway then had to be at his best to make a smart save from Kretzchmer. However, six minutes from half time, the game changed. A cross was played in from the Woking left and appeared to be handled by Gayle in the area. Gayle went down in a heap, while Conway pounced on the loose ball. The referee’s whistle blew and he pointed back toward the middle. Initially, it was thought that a free kick had been awarded for the hand ball. There was stunned disbelief among the Rovers players when it became apparent that a goal had been given. Agonisingly for all connected with Kempston, the photographic evidence clearly showed that the ball had not crossed the line. Injustice was compounded before the break as Woking surged forward with Loza who saw his shot parried by Conway. With the ball loose in the six yard box it was a foot race between former Dundee frontman Jake Hyde and Alfie Powell. Hyde got there marginally quicker and tapped the ball in to double the lead. Powell, in his effort to stop the ball, collided with the post and was stretchered from the field with suspected ankle ligament damage and a twisted knee. A heart-breaking six minute spell was wrapped up when Hyde was unmarked from a counter attack to tap in Woking’s third goal in first half added time. Rovers emerged for the second half earlier than their hosts, with a determination in their body language. Within four minutes of the restart, sub Nathan Tshikuna had a long shot that stung the palms of Ross in the Woking goal. Luke Heneghan then found Shane Bush in the area, who attempted to muscle past his man, but Collier stood firm to block. Jake Hyde saw a snap shot fly over the bar before the hour mark as Woking looked to reassert their dominance. With eighteen minutes to go, Kempston got a moment to savour. A long ball by Daniel Akubuine found sub Josh Crawley on the corner of the penalty box. He turned inside his man and curled a beautiful effort into the far top corner to send the visiting fans wild. The goal was later described as “world class” by Woking manager Alan Dowson in his post match interview. Two minutes later, joy turned into disbelief as Crawley crossed in to Shane Bush. The forward took the ball on his chest at the edge of the area and sent a right foot volley into the top corner past a helpless Ross. Rovers had their tails up and were pressing the matter as Woking had no answer to the attacking threat. Eight minutes from time, Crawley put another dangerous ball into the box, which was half cleared to Luke Heneghan on the edge of the box, he took a touch to get away from his marker and unleashed a rocket shot that took a manful block from Cook to prevent an equaliser. As Rovers poured forward, the game became stretched and the contest opened up into a breathless end to end encounter. With just four minutes of normal time to go, a long free kick from Martin Conway found the head of Shane Bush, who forced a full stretch save from Ross. Mason Spence flashed a shot wide of goal after being put in by Heneghan, then as the game ticked into stoppage time Alex Collard saw a header go just wide. Three minutes into added time a neat move on the edge of the box saw Heneghan feed Spence again, but the midfielder was closed out by the defenders. With one last throw of the dice, Martin Conway came up for a corner. The ball was only half cleared and fell to Conway, who saw his shot fly over. The final whistle drew a standing ovation from all areas of the ground for the efforts of both sides in making a truly pulsating cup tie. The result brings to an end Rovers fairytale run in this year’s competition, leaving the supporters with memories that will last a lifetime. Woking manager Alan Dowson, in his post match interview was full of praise for the way that Rovers had conducted themselves, especially in the second half and admitted to being a little worried at the end of the game. A return to league action on Tuesday night sees Rovers travelling to Aylesbury for a quarter to eight kick off ahead of next weekend’s FA Trophy trip to Dereham Town and what could possibly be another magical cup adventure in the making.

Match Report

Arch Deacon

By Matthew Wilmot Aylesbury FC 1 – 2 Kemspton Kempston came into this fixture without having played a league game in a month after their recent cup exploits. Josh Crawley was restored to the starting line up after his amazing goal at Woking at the weekend. Rovers seemed to be suffering from a case of ‘after the lord mayors show’ in the early stages, as Bayliss got an early shot off that was saved by Martin Conway, he was denied by a block from Seb Simpson later in the half as he was played in on the counter attack. Rovers had their first chance from a well worked corner, Ben Shepherd played the ball across, where a neat backheel from Shane Bush at the near post pushed the ball across to Alex Collard. The defender saw his shot blocked on the goal line. Moments later, another counter attack saw Bayliss away again in the right hand channel, his left foot stab shot slipped under Conway and into the net to break the deadlock. With less than ten minutes to half time, Kempston should have levelled matters, as Mason Spence threaded a cross ball, which found Crawley unmarked in the area, but the forward spooned over. The match then changed completely in the space of three minutes just before the break, as after a late challenge, several players became involved in a petty scuffle in the middle of the park. Aylesbury’s Strafford was shown a straight red card for his part in the affair and took an age to leave the field, arguing as he went. He would later re-appear in the stands with some colourful language directed at Kempston officials. When the fuss had died down and the game restarted, it became apparent that Aylesbury needed to withdraw the dangerous Bayliss through injury. In the space of three minutes, the hosts had been reduced to ten men and lost their best player on the night. Rovers began the second half with a more pressing attitude. Mason Spence flicked wide from a corner less than a minute after the restart. Ben Shepherd then drew a fine save from Bennion in the Aylesbury goal with a curling effort from the edge of the box. From the resulting corner, Spence headed against the bar. The hosts were still a threat on the counter and Conway had to be alert to deny Tappin with a smart save midway though the half. Nathan Tshikuna then had three bites at the cherry, jinking in from the touchline and shooting with his left foot. The first shot was saved by the keeper and his two follow up efforts were blocked by defenders as Rovers wondered if it was to be one of those nights. With fifteen minutes to go, sub Luke Heneghan threw a cross into the box, where it was powerfully met at the far post by Shane Bush. The forward’s header had too much on it and flew past Bennion to level the scores. In to the last few moments of normal time, a Ben Shepherd cross was headed back across goal and met by the flying figure of Ty Deacon, off the bench against his former club, but the young forward couldn’t keep the ball down. In the last of the six additional minutes, for the earlier timewasting, Rovers snatched the winner. Seb Simpson put a cross into the box, which was met by a cluster of bodies at the far post. The ball ran loose in the middle of the six yard box, where Deacon was on hand, sliding in with a defender to nudge it into the net to settle the game. The win lifts Rovers up the table to twelfth, although they still have a number of games in hand on those around them thanks to the various cup runs. Next up is a weekend trip to Dereham in the FA Trophy. The coach leave the club at half past ten. Kempston Rovers 2018-19 e m a s g p
