Nikolaj Von Wassilko. Bukovinian Statesman and Diplomat
https://doi.org/10.4316/CC.2019.01.010 POLITICS AND INTERNATIONAL STUDIES NIKOLAJ VON WASSILKO. BUKOVINIAN STATESMAN AND DIPLOMAT Oleksandr DOBRZHANSKYI Yurii Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University (Ukraine) E-mail: [email protected] Abstract: The article is dedicated to the study of the political biography of Nikolaj von Wassilko, a well-known Bukovinian leader, one of the most controversial personages among Ukrainian politicians of Austria-Hungary at the end of the 19th – the beginning of the 20th century. It is worth mentioning that many scientists from various countries wrote about N. Wassilko, but separate studies about his life and political activities have not been written yet. Author paid considerable attention to the formation of N. Wassilko's political views, the evolution of his preferences from conservative Rusynism and Moscophilia philosophy to the populistic doctrine. Since the beginning of the 20th century, N. Wassilko became almost the sole leader of Ukrainians in Bukovina. The article presents the analysis of his activities in the Austrian Parliament, the Diet of Bukovina, public organizations, and his initiatives to resolve various regional issues. His activities in the years of World War I were equally rich. In particular, the article shows his diplomatic activities as the ambassador of the ZUNR (West Ukrainian People's Republic) in Vienna, the ambassador of the UPR (Ukrainian People's Republic) in Switzerland and other countries. At the end of the research, the author points out the remarkable path of N. Wassilko in the history of the Ukrainian movement in Bukovina in the early twentieth century, as one of the central figures of the Ukrainian diplomacy during 1918-1924. -

The evergreen valleys boasted forests of beech, oak, ash, spruce, birch and fir. The area produced grain, sugar beets, cattle and sheep and the farm crops included potatoes, walnuts, chestnuts, corn, rye, oats, barley, flax, wheat, apples, pears, plums, peaches, cherries, grapes, and other berries. Lumber and wood, minerals, salt and petroleum were also products of Bucovina, the most densely settled province of Romania. In 1913 there were 200 people per square mile and 800,000 people in the whole of Bucovina. -
Speech by HIH the Prince Napoleon Governor
Speech by HIH The Prince Napoleon Governor-General, Your Imperial and Royal Highness, Your Royal Highnesses, Your Grand Ducal Highnesses, Your Serene Highnesses, Your Illustrious Highness, Your Excellencies, Your Grace, My Lords, Reverend Fathers, Ladies and Gentlemen I am truly delighted to Be here this evening in the heart of this ancient city of London. May I Begin By expressing my sincere thanks to the Lord Mayor and Court of Common Council for electing me to the freedom of this ancient city of London and to the ChamBerlain of London and his Clerk for presiding at the ceremony earlier this evening. I would also like to thank my proposer and good friend Sir Anthony Bailey and the 675th Lord Mayor of this city Sir Gavyn Arthur for proposing me for this singular honour. Thank you too for your kind words, dear Anthony, and to all those who have organised this celebration which touches me deeply. This gathering takes place at a moment of exceptional communion between our two great cities and countries much like ten years ago when London suffered the same terrorist aggressions. I was very moved when last week all British and French supporters and players at WemBley stadium, sang together the God Save the Queen and La Marseillaise. As a descendant of "Bony", "l'ennemi juré", I would like to express my deepest gratitude. I have lived for 3 years so far in London, a city I learned to love and admire, and where I learned the world and its complexities. I rememBer my first arrival By Eurostar at Waterloo station. -
Cronologia Unirii Bucovinei Cu România (II): Intervenția Românească În Bucovina Și Unirea Acesteia Cu România (8-28 Noiembrie 1918)
Cronologia unirii Bucovinei cu România (II): Intervenția românească în Bucovina și unirea acesteia cu România (8-28 noiembrie 1918) Paul BRUSANOWSKI Universitatea „Lucian Blaga” din Sibiu Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu Personal e-mail: [email protected] The Chronology of Bucovina’s Union with Romania (II): The Romanian Intervention in Bucovina and its Union with Romania (8-28 November 1918) During the dissolution of Habsburg Austria, the Ukrainians organized a National Assembly in Lviv on October 19 and declared the establishment of the Ukrainian state, stretching from the San River in the west (today, in south- eastern Poland) to the Siret River in the east (thus including the northern half of Bukovina). The Romanians in Bukovina held a Constituent Assembly on October 27 and decided the unification of the whole Bukovina with Romania. On November 1, 1918, the Ukrainians organized a coup d’état and took over Eastern Galicia, and on November 6, the city of Chernivtsi. Upon the request of the Romanian Constituent Assembly, the Romanian Royal Army entered Bukovina, and on November 12, occupied the city of Chernivtsi, from which the Ukrainian soldiers and officials had fled. The Romanian National Council, established by the Constituent Assembly, took over the power in Bukovina, issued a new constitution of the country and instituted a Romanian government in Bukovina. On November 28, the Romanian government organized a Congress of all the inhabitants of Bukovina, which proclaimed the union of the province with Romania. The German and the Polish inhabitants of the province officially attended the Congress and sanctioned the union; the Jewish community boycotted the Congress, while only 13 unofficial representatives of the Ukrainian community from several Ruthenian villages participated. -

Czernowitz: the Jerusalem of Bukovina
Abstract: Cernăuţi, known as Czernowitz in Yiddish, gathered together important personalities in order to debate on the issue of the status of Yiddish. The power and the contribution of the Jews of Bukovina to the culture and spirituality of Bukovina – beyond the economic references, such as commerce, finances and banks – were really impressive, as a proof being the personalities asserted within the Bukovina area including at the top: Paul Celan (Paul Antschel) Moses Barasch, Jacob Eisenscher, Arthur Kolnik, Slomo Lerner, Itic Manger, Eliezer Steinbarg, Moses Rosenkrantz, -
