Giambattista Canano and His Myology
Looking Back Giambattista Canano and his myology Štrkalj G Faculty of Science, ABSTRACT Macquarie University, Giambattista Canano was a sixteenth century Italian anatomist and physician. He was educated at the University Sydney, New South Wales, Australia of Ferrara where, upon graduation, he was appointed professor of anatomy. While at the university, Canano carried out a pioneering study of skeletal muscles. This study was to be published in a multi-volumed book Address for correspondence: entitled Musculorum Humani Corporis Picturata Dissectio. However, only the section on the muscles of the Prof. Goran Štrkalj, upper limb was published, as Canano stopped the printing of his book. It is hypothesized that he met Vesalius E-mail: goran.strkalj@ at the time and saw the proofs of his Fabrica which he assessed as far superior and, consequently, decided to mq.edu.au abort his project. The preserved copies of the Dissectio, however, show that the standards of Canano’s work surpassed most of the anatomical studies published up to that time. Canano subsequently left the academic position and made a notable career as a physician. His appointments included prestigious positions of physician to the Pope and protomedicus of the House of Este in Ferrara. Received : 07-04-2014 Review completed : 08-04-2014 Accepted : 28-04-2014 KEY WORDS: Giambattista Canano, history of anatomy, myology Introduction which included university professors and court physicians. The physician and astronomer Abu al-Fazl Hubaysh was given the title “al-Mutabbib” (the doctor) for the numerous medical texts he composed, including the present volume as well as the “Kafiyat al-Tibb” (Encyclopedia of Medicine). Though little is known about al-Tiflisi’s working life, he is thought to have lived around 600 H (1203 CE). – The colophon is signed by Ismail bin Abd’ulhaq al-Hamsa Damashqi al-Mutabbib, whose title most probably records the use of the volume by an early medical practitioner. -

Physical agents The aim of the study is to evaluate the hygiene rules that were effective in preventing the spread of the plague in Ferrara in 1630, by examining historical documents and reports. According to these documents, a kind of empirical “integrated disease management” was carried out, using remedies including compounds with bac- tericidal, anti-parasite and repellent activity, and by technical strategies including avoidance of possible plague carriers. The anti-plague remedies and technical strategies used in ancient Ferrara are critically analysed using a multidisciplinary approach (pharmaceutic, medical, epidemiologic and entomological) and compared to current prevention protocols. -
Fil. Clás. Estud. A Non-Classical Plant: The Aubergine in the Medieval and Early Modern Pharmacology ABSTRACT Aubergine (Solanum melongena L.) is a plant from the Solanaceae family with multiple varieties, whose wild ancestors come from Indochina and East Africa. -
