Webmaster– Doug Heady [email protected] July is here, and the AuSable River Canoe Marathon is fast approaching. Spike’s Challenge is the final test before the biggest race weekend in Michigan. Nothing matches the exhilaration of standing on the starting line in front of a crowd of 10,000 spectators the last Saturday in July, or the sense of accomplishment upon crossing the finish line on Sunday. After the AuSable, our season continues– after a quick segway to the USCA Nationals in Dubuque, IA. The Nationals is a great way to get the whole family involved in canoe racing, with events for kids, men, and women– all different lengths, crafts, and abilities welcome. Dubuque is also on the Mississippi River and a foodie destinationwith a vibrant downtown– something worth checking out. The end of August is marked by the last race on the AuSable for 2017, the Mio “First Dam” Canoe Race. Mio is the women’s feature event this year, with separate women’s purses for C-1 & C-2, and a special raffle of Susan William’s Activewear! Youth, Mentor and Old Timers races round out a fun weekend. Don’t forget– the C1 prize raffle– each race entered gives you another chance to win! This year the MCRA is promoting youth in the sport, with a series of junior and mentor races, plus a 19 & under bonus in the C-1 races. Not to leave the seasoned paddlers out, we are continuing to promote an age group bonus in races with more than 4 C-1 paddlers over 70. See you on the water! —Rebecca Davis
