Whitelaw Senior Lecturer, School of Hospitality, Tourism and Marketing Senior Associate of the Centre for Tourism and Services Research at Victoria University, Melbourne, Australia Handbook of hospitality operations and IT Introduction As reviews of information and communications technol- ogy (ICT) research demonstrate (Frew 2000; O’Connor and Murphy 2004), this subject has been researched from a variety of perspectives. However, because the technology often tran- scends traditional ways of managing operations and organiz- ing activities, it is not easy to select specific research studies in the operations field or to categorize them. In particular, the Internet and web-based systems are enabling new busi- ness models and ways of doing things that blur the distinction between operations and marketing (as the previous chapter on electronic distribution demonstrates). Nonetheless, this chapter explores the types of technology now in use in the industry and how ICT has changed operations in particular. In doing this, three themes emerge: the first is how ICT has put more power in the hands of the guest; second, how ICT has improved the operational efficiency of service staff; and finally, how ICT has improved information flows to senior management thus providing more capacity for understanding, forecasting and strategic planning. Further, the exploration of these issues will also consider ways in which these emerging technologies can provide fresh insight into long-established service management theory. These perspectives assume that there is a current benchmark of automation – such as hotels having a computerized reserva- tion and rooms management system and bars with food and beverage management systems.

Selection of firms The population consists of the 842 American corporations that appeared at least once between 2007 and 2014 on the Forbes Global 2000 list, an annual ranking of the 2000 largest public enterprises in the world. 2. Data & Operationalization 2.1. Corporations An “AI firm” is defined as a company that primarily operates in the technology sector and, at the same time, is a big player in AI research and development. The stipulation of these two criteria is consistent with the aim of the analysis, which is to study corporations whose AI development is a core activity. For this reason, the definition excludes non-tech corporations that invest heavily in AI R&D, such as General Motors, and tech-firms that are relatively minor players in the AI domain. First, the NAICS classification system was used to determine whether a corporation is a tech firm or not. NAICS codes are constructed to denote varying levels of specificity. The two first digits designate the broadest business sector, the first three the subsector, the first four the industry group, the first five the industry. The full six-digit sequence is the national industry. Table 1 contains a list of the tech relevant NAICS codes. The NAICS codes of firms were collected from Compustat. A weak supervision approach is utilized to estimate the short-term effect on stock re- turns given press releases of different categories. By utilizing the data programming framework as implemented in the Snorkel library, approximately 24% of all press releases are categorized into a set of 10 distinct categories. Further, a collection of machine learning models for stock price prediction is developed, where simulation is conducted to determine how press releases may be used to forecast stock price movement.
