DOMAINE DUJAC Clos Saint Denis 1970 - 2004 by Neal Martin March 2020 By Neal Martin | March 31, 2020 Walking back from a dinner last year, a friend asked if I was aware of the current market price for mature bottles of Domaine Dujac. “No,” I replied. All I knew was that they are beyond my budget. He whipped out his smartphone and dug up the price for a 1990 Clos de la Roche. I was gobsmacked – it was a cool £5,000 per bottle. Of course I am inured to the escalation in Burgundy prices in recent years, but even so, I found it staggering how much 750ml of Pinot Noir could cost. Then I remembered a bacchanal in Paris the previous January with a gaggle of high-rolling, wine-loving friends vowing serious damage to Tour d’Argent’s astonishing wine list. Jeremy Seysses joined us for a dinner that ranks among the greatest in my life, one where my already lofty estimation of Dujac went up a few notches. It was not Clos de la Roche that blew my mind but mature vintages of Clos Saint-Denis. I confess to an ardent passion for this vineyard, one shared by a number of winemakers, though it seems to lie unfairly in the shadow of Clos de la Roche within the context of Morey-Saint-Denis. So, when I was invited to a vertical of Dujac’s Clos Saint-Denis in London last April, there was no way I was going to miss it. This vertical tasting was organized by collector Jordi Orriols-Gil and took place at Hide restaurant in central London, with around fifteen Burgundy lovers in attendance.

  • Georges Lignier
Georges Lignier Having been known as the U.S. importer for Hubert Lignier for over 30 years, in 2014 we expanded our connection to the Lignier name through another branch of the family. Georges Lignier is a cousin of Hubert, and while the two estates are clearly separate op- erations, they do share some of the greatest vineyards in and around Morey-Saint-Denis. The domaine is led by Benoit Stehly, nephew of Georges Lignier, who worked at the domaine for a decade alongside his uncle, before assuming control of the work in both the vineyard and the cellar in 2008. When it comes to the vineyard holdings, the depth of appellations in both the Premier and Grand Crus is astounding. Overall, the domaine counts sixteen hectares encompassing 50 parcels, across 17 appellations in both white and red. Moreover, these are generally not single rows of rare plots, but substantial parcels within some of the greatest sites in the Cote d’Or. For example, the estate is the largest proprietor of the Grand Cru Clos Saint-Denis, at 1.49 hectares, and controls over a hectare of the Clos de la Roche Grand Cru. Viticulture: • Farming: Lutte Raisonnée • Treatments: No herbicide; chemical treatments when needed • Ploughing: Occasional ploughing by lightweight tractor, but only when necessary. Instead, Benoît allows grass to grow between the rows, which naturally pushes the vine’s root system deeper into the bedrock. His is the only domaine in Morey that allows grass to grow freely in the vineyard. • Soils: Limestone-clay • Vines: Average 50 years old, young vines average 15 years old, all trained in Guyot.

  • Toppan Printing's NFC Tags for Authentication Chosen by High-End Burgundy Wine Producer
November 16, 2018 Toppan Printing Co., Ltd. Toppan Printing’s NFC Tags for Authentication Chosen by High-end Burgundy Wine Producer Preventing fraudulent distribution and counterfeiting of high-end wines with Cachet-Tag—an NFC tag processed to ensure that the antenna circuit breaks to prevent reading when the label is removed Toppan Printing Co., Ltd.’s (hereafter Toppan Printing; head office: Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo; President & Representative Director: Shingo Kaneko) Cachet-Tag™—an NFC1 tag designed to ensure that removal breaks the antenna circuit and makes reading impossible— has been selected for use on all Grand Cru wines produced by Domaine Ponsot, a high-end wine producer based in Burgundy, France. Shipments of products using Cachet-Tag commenced in October 2018. If the Cachet-Tag is removed from the wine bottle, the NFC tag breaks and the data on it can no longer be read. This can prevent relabeling and other types of fraud and is an effective measure against counterfeit and imitation products. When scanned with an NFC-enabled smartphone, the data stored on the IC chip can be read by a dedicated app provided by Selinko SA (head office: Belgium; CEO:Patrick Eischen), a company expert in authentication, gray market detection, and marketing services for connected objects. The result of authentication is then displayed on the smartphone screen to enable easy verification. The technology can also be used as a tool to provide consumers with product-related and other information. Domaine Ponsot is a Burgundy-based producer of high-end wines. Due to the rarity and excellent reputation of its wines, Domaine Ponsot has led the high-end wine market in introducing advanced counterfeit prevention technologies in response to damage to its brand caused by counterfeit products for more than 20 years.

  • The Climats of Burgundy Official Candidate for France for World Heritage List Inscription
The Climats of Burgundy Official Candidate for France for World Heritage List inscription Terroirs steeped in history, devoted to excellence Treasures for humanity THE CLIMATS in a few words In Burgundy, when we speak of a Climat, we do not look up to the sky, we keep our eyes to the ground." Bernard Pivot, writer, Membre de l’Institut, President of the Support Committee What exactly is a "Climat" in Burgundy? In Burgundy, the word "Climat" refers to a named, specific vineyard site, a parcel or plot of land whose limits have been determined over several centuries. More than 1,247 Climats spread over the region from Dijon to the south of Beaune, shaping the landscape like a mosaic. Each of them has its own history, produces wines with a distinct character and taste and keeps its own place in the hierarchy of the Burgundy crus; some have illustrious names like Chambertin, Romanée-Conti, Clos de Vougeot, Montrachet, Corton, Musigny... Why are the Climats unique? Nowhere else in the world has man shown such determination to so precisely link a wine production to its place of origin. The result is an extremely fragmented vineyard system, supported by a solid winemaking expertise that is committed to excellence. Its remarkable landscapes include towns with an exceptional architectural heritage like Dijon and Beaune, all of which combine to form a very special type of economy and culture. What exactly do we hope to have inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List? The listing application is not limited to the vineyards themselves. Our objective is to obtain official recognition of the history and culture of an emblematic territory.

  • Burgundy: a Journey of Discovery Introduction
Extended Report Q1 2021 Burgundy: A journey of discovery Introduction Burgundy En Primeur marks the start to an exciting new year in wine, especially for the UK trade, the biggest buyer of Burgundy wines. January is dedicated to elaborate tastings of the new vintage and meetings with the growers from the famed region. This year, the 2019 En Primeur campaign took place virtually, and while this posed challenges, it has not failed to excite. With its inherent complexity and scarcity, Burgundy proved it still possesses the other worldliness that a locked-down planet would seem to crave. The newly released (and critically acclaimed) vintage saw a return to tight allocations after a ‘plentiful’ 2018 campaign. Record prices for barrels of the new vintage at the Hospices de Beaune auction were already smashed in 2019. Despite some elevated prices, merchants are now reporting strong demand as the release hits full flow. Rarity has long been the main driver behind Burgundy’s market evolution, attracting growing attention from collectors (and investors) from across the globe – particularly over the past decade. Since 2010 we have seen Burgundy’s market share by value rise from 1% to a record 20% in 2019, albeit finishing 2020 at 18%. Prices raced higher, with the Burgundy 150 index reaching a record high in 2018. The index rose 140% between December 2010 and December 2020, versus 40% for the Liv-ex 1000, and 20% for the Bordeaux 500 index. Just last month, Domaine Leroy Musigny Grand Cru 1999 (£24,380 per 1x75) became the most expensive bottle of wine to trade in the 20-year history of Liv-ex.
