Thesis work: Automated Optimization of Control Software in Virtual Test Cell System for Powertrain Calibration Location: Volvo Penta, Gothenburg, Sweden Background The Volvo Group is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of trucks, buses, construction equipment and marine and industrial engines under the leading brands Volvo, Renault Trucks, Mack, UD Trucks, Eicher, SDLG, Terex Trucks, Prevost, Nova Bus, UD Bus, Sunwin Bus and Volvo Penta. With Volvo Penta, a world-leading supplier of engines and complete drive systems for marine and industrial applications, you will be part of a global and diverse team of highly skilled professionals who works with passion, trust each other and embraces change to stay ahead. Scope Volvo Penta has developed a Hardware-in-loop system called Virtual Test Cell (VIRTEC) for testing and calibration of powertrain systems. The current thesis is part of Volvo Penta-Chalmers collaboration to improve this system. You can read more about the project here: https://www.vinnova.se/p/virtuell-motor-kalibrerning-vircal/. The VIRTEC system aims to reduce the testing and calibration cost by moving part of the activities from the test cells to VIRTEC, to increase the quality and to provide an opportunity to test the entire domain of powertrain operation before it is delivered to the customers. This thesis will be part of the automation phase of the project. The goal of this thesis is to evaluate the possibility of optimizing the control software in the virtual test cell. Optimizing the coupled system of powertrain (engine and aftertreatment system) and control software is time consuming and a major step in engine development. The current thesis will optimize part of the control system in the virtual test cell and compare the results with the traditional optimization in the test cells.
