PRESS RELEASE Ref: 2016/03 SMT Group takes Moroccan Volvo CE distribution Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) has announced that it is divesting its business within Volvo Maroc SA to a longstanding distribution partner SMT Group. Subject to regulatory approval, the agreement between SMT Group and Volvo CE will come into effect in the second quarter of 2016 and cover the sale, importation and distribution of Volvo and SDLG branded construction equipment products and services in Morocco. Volvo CE business and employees will transfer to SMT, along with all warranties and service agreements, maintaining the Volvo brand’s strong customer relationships and high quality of service in Morocco. SBMH who is distributing the SDLG brand products in Morocco, will continue to act under the new direction of SMT. “Our colleagues at Volvo Maroc have built up the Volvo CE business in Morocco almost from scratch over the last 10 years and benefited from a close association with the strong Volvo Truck brand image in the country,” says Tomas Kuta, president of Volvo CE’s Europe, Middle East and Africa sales region. “We now feel that further growth would be best achieved by a strong independent dealer, one that can offer the right investments and give the opportunity to develop new business and achieve economies of scale as part of a large group in North West Africa. “With many years of experience doing business in North and West Africa, and with a clear vision for growth in the region, SMT is an ideal partner to take over and grow the Volvo CE business in Morocco,” Kuta concludes. -

THE TROJAN HORSE: IMPORTED AUTOMOBILES In the last two decades of the nineteenth century, the furor for bicycles as a personal and economical means of transport led to the invasion of the French market by English and American firms—leading to fierce commercial competition with the country’s own industries—resulting in the collapse of 1898. In the early stages of the new century the full development of the European automobile industry and in particular the French sector—with the inseparable development of the tire—produced a similar effect. However, this time it was the American market that was invaded by imported European vehicles, pre- dominantly from France. 1. Transatlantic travel on wheels Between 1890 and 1891 the first French vehicles marketed by Peugeot—one of the major bicycle manu- facturers—and Panhard et Levassor, appeared on the scene and incorporated the internal combustion engine developed by the German Gottlieb Daimler. French and German investments in technology, which would be imposed on the rest, was based on gasoline-powered engines and collided with the English and North American options, diversified between vapor, electric and gas-powered automobiles. Production data from the United States in 1899 show that there were 2,500 vehicles—about 80% of which used electric or steam engines—manufactured by around 30 companies. Between 1900 and 1901, France was by far the world’s largest automobile producer. -

AB Volvo Press release Renault Trucks Defense finalizes acquisition of French Panhard Renault Trucks Defense, which is included in the Volvo Group’s Governmental Sales business area, has finalized the acquisition of the French automotive manufacturer Panhard. The total purchase consideration is SEK 538 M. The transaction was concluded following approval from the appropriate authorities. Panhard is a private company that traces its roots to the passenger-car industry. The company specializes in the manufacture of small armored vehicles adapted for defense operations. In 2011, Panhard had sales of EUR 81 M, resulting in operating profit of EUR 9.4 M. The company has approximately 300 employees. The transaction has no significant impact on the Volvo Group’s earnings or financial position.
