The Expression of Orientations in Time and Space with Flashbacks and Flash-forwards in the Series "Lost" Promotor: Auteur: Prof. Dr. S. Slembrouck Olga Berendeeva Master in de Taal- en Letterkunde Afstudeerrichting: Master Engels Academiejaar 2008-2009 2e examenperiode For My Parents Who are so far But always so close to me Мои родителям, Которые так далеко, Но всегда рядом ii Acknowledgments First of all, I would like to thank Professor Dr. Stefaan Slembrouck for his interest in my work. I am grateful for all the encouragement, help and ideas he gave me throughout the writing. He was the one who helped me to figure out the subject of my work which I am especially thankful for as it has been such a pleasure working on it! Secondly, I want to thank my boyfriend Patrick who shared enthusiasm for my subject, inspired me, and always encouraged me to keep up even when my mood was down. Also my friend Sarah who gave me a feedback on my thesis was a very big help and I am grateful. A special thank you goes to my parents who always believed in me and supported me. Thanks to all the teachers and professors who provided me with the necessary baggage of knowledge which I will now proudly carry through life. iii Foreword In my previous research paper I wrote about film discourse, thus, this time I wanted to continue with it but have something new, some kind of challenge which would interest me. After a conversation with my thesis guide, Professor Slembrouck, we decided to stick on to film discourse but to expand it. -

2007 International CES JANUARY 8, 2007 Bob Iger, President and Chief Executive Officer, The Walt Disney Company PREPARED REMARKS ONLY. PLEASE NOTE THAT PORTIONS OF THE FOLLOWING PRESENTATION WERE EXTEMPORANEOUS AND AD LIBBED AND THOSE PORTIONS ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THE TRANSCRIPT BELOW. Bob Iger – President and Chief Executive Officer, The Walt Disney Company Good afternoon. It’s great to be here. Since the day Walt Disney started this company, Disney has had one secret to its success: bringing the timelessness of great characters and powerful storytelling to the timeliness of the cutting edge. From the multi-plane camera that reinvented animation in 1942 to the mega- gigahertz processing of computer animation of today, Disney is a company where art challenges technology and technology inspires art. Artists are constantly seeking new ways to fulfill their creative visions. Technology provides them the tools to scale new imaginative heights. Today, technology empowers the consumer more than ever before and we use it to deliver quality content in the most convenient and timely way possible, to every screen within reach and at a price that makes it a genuine value. We are witnessing an explosion of media and Disney is both reaping the benefits of that explosion and acting as a catalyst by taking a technology-friendly approach. Page 1 2007 International CES January 8, 2007 I am proud to say we were the first company to put movies and TV shows on iTunes, helping to accelerate a consumer revolution. As suppliers of some of the best-branded and highest –quality content in the world, we both create and satisfy demand. -

Abstract This thesis uses Barthes’ Mythologies as a framework to examine the ways in which the Canadian nation has been mythologized, exploring how this mythologization affects our sense of national identity. Because, as Barthes says, the ultimate goal of myth is to transform history into nature, it is necessary to delve into Canada’s past in order to understand when, why, and how it has become the nation it is today. This will involve tracing some key aspects of Canadian history, society, and pop culture from Canada’s earliest days to current times to uncover the “true origins” of the naturalized, taken-for-granted elements of our identity.
