UNICEF-Liberia Ebola Viral Disease: SitRep #13 9 April 2014 Key Points The total number of suspected, probable and confirmed cases of Ebola now stands at 22, with 12- Ebola related deaths. The two additional deaths were added retroactively to the death toll and thus do not reflect overnight developments. The total number of confirmed Ebola cases stands at five. President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf attended today’s the daily meeting of the National Task Force (NTF) on Health Emergencies, where she thanked the group and reiterated her commitment to the Ebola response. Foya, Lofa County, remains the epicentre of the Ebola outbreak. However suspected, probable and confirmed Ebola cases have been reported in Lofa (7), Margibi (6), Bong (4), Nimba (3), Montserrado (1) and Grand Cape Mount (1) Counties. Together with UNMIL, UNICEF stepped up outreach efforts to schools via key government and NGO partners; finalized the MoHSW and WHO-approved Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) document for health workers; and committed to providing additional interpersonal communications support in Lofa County. So far, UNICEF has provided 7 cholera kits, 8 large tents to establish isolation units, 15,360 pieces of soap, 725 kg of chlorine, 20 spray cans, 100 basic family water kits, 4,830 boxes of disinfectant, over 9,200 buckets and 2,360 jerry cans and printed several communication materials. UNICEF’s total, estimated funding requirement for Ebola-related Health, C4D and WASH interventions remains US$ 478,036 for the next three months, and the estimated gap remains US$ 344,676. Visit by the President Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf attended today’s daily meeting of the NTF at the MoHSW, where she commended the Ministry for its response to the Ebola outbreak; thanked the NTF and all partners for their efforts to contain the virus; and assured attendees that she was committed to the MoHSW-led Ebola response. -

Ousman Kobo, Advisor Antoinette Errante Ahmad Sikianga i Copyright by Henryatta Louise Ballah 2012 ii Abstract This dissertation explores the historical causes of the Liberian civil war (1989- 2003), with a keen attention to the history of Liberian youth, since the beginning of the Republic in 1847. I carefully analyzed youth engagements in social and political change throughout the country’s history, including the ways by which the civil war impacted the youth and inspired them to create new social and economic spaces for themselves. As will be demonstrated in various chapters, despite their marginalization by the state, the youth have played a crucial role in the quest for democratization in the country, especially since the 1960s. I place my analysis of the youth in deep societal structures related to Liberia’s colonial past and neo-colonial status, as well as the impact of external factors, such as the financial and military support the regime of Samuel Doe received from the United States during the cold war and the influence of other African nations. I emphasize that the socio-economic and political policies implemented by the Americo- Liberians (freed slaves from the U.S.) who settled in the country beginning in 1822, helped lay the foundation for the civil war. -

Nimba’s Profile The Flag of Nimba County: - (Valor, Purity and Fidelity reflected in the stripes) Nimba was part of the central province of Liberia which included Bong and Lofa. It became a full-fledged county in 1964 when President William V.S. Tubman changed the provinces into counties. Nimba became one of the original nine counties of Liberia. Over the years, other sub-divisions have been added making the total of 15 counties. Nimba is located in the North-East Region of the country. The size of Nimba is 4,650 square miles. In his book, Liberia Facing Mount Nimba, Dr. Nya Kwiawon Taryor, Sr. revealed that the name of the county "Nimba", originated from "Nenbaa ton" which means slippery mountain where beautiful young girls slip and fall. Mount Nimba is the highest mountain in Liberia. Nimba is the second largest county in Liberia in terms of population. Before the civil war in 1989, there were over 313,050 people in the county according to the 1984 census. Now Nimba Population has increased to 462,026. Nimba is also one of the richest in Liberia. It has the largest deposit of high grade iron ore. Other natural resources found in Nimba are gold, diamonds, timber, etc. In the late 50's, Nimba's huge iron ore reserve was exploited by LAMCO-the Liberian-American Swedish Mining Company. A considerable portion of Liberia's Gross Domestic Product, GDP, was said to have been generated from revenues from Nimba's iron ore for several years. Where Have All the (Qualified) Teachers Gone?

Accepted 3 April, 2018 ABSTRACT This paper analyzes data collected in the 2013 Liberian Annual School Census undertaken as part of the Educational Management Information System and supplemented by information gathered from teacher education program organizers as well as from samples of graduates from preservice and inservice C- Certificate granting programs undertaken in Liberia in during 2007 to 2013. The authors report that the percentage of “qualified” primary school teachers (that is, those with at least a C-Certificate, which Liberian policy sets as the minimum qualification) expanded dramatically after the education system was decimated during the years of civil war (1989 to 2003). We also indicate that in government primary schools in 2013, the pupil-teacher ratio (24.8) and even the pupil-qualified teacher ratio (36.2) was lower – that is, better – than the policy goal of 44 pupils per teacher. However, teacher hiring and deployment decisions led to large inequalities in these input measures of educational quality. At the same time, the authors discovered that the findings from the analysis of Liberia’s 2013 EMIS data did not fully answer the question of where the (qualified) teachers are, in that we were not able to locate in the EMIS database substantial numbers of graduates of the various C-Certificate teacher education programs.
