We report nine new records of snakes from Hoa Binh Province based on a reptile collection from Thuong Tien, Hang Kia-Pa Co, Ngoc Son-Ngo Luong nature reserves, and Tan Lac District, comprising six species of Colubri- dae (Dryocalamus davisonii, Euprepiophis mandarinus, Lycodon futsingensis, L. meridionalis, Sibynophis collaris and Sinonatrix aequifasciata), one species of Pareatidae (Pareas hamptoni) and two species of Viperidae (Protobothrops mu- crosquamatus and Trimeresurus gumprechti). In addition, we provide an updated list of 43 snake species from Hoa Binh Province. The snake fauna of Hoa Binh contains some species of conservation concern with seven species listed in the Governmental Decree No. 32/2006/ND-CP (2006), nine species listed in the Vietnam Red Data Book (2007), and three species listed in the IUCN Red List (2018). Its validity is still controversial and unresolved. Based on extensive sampling in Yunnan, we conducted morphological comparison and molecular phylogenetics on the unidentified specimens of Plagiopholis from Yunnan. Based on a combination of mor- phological comparison and molecular phylogeny, the newly collected specimens could be identified as P. blakewayi. While some specimens exhibit one or more diagnostics of P. unipostocularis, and some characteristics are intermediate between that of Plagiopholis unipostocularis and P. blakewayi. Thus morphological continuities between two species un- covered P. unipostocularis is a synonymy of P. blakewayi, and the diagnostics of this species was revised accordingly. When properly prepared and identified, a shed snake skin can be used as an important voucher; the morphological descriptions of the shed skins may be critical for taxonomic research, as well as studies of snake ecology and conservation. However, few convenient/ expeditious methods or techniques to identify shed snake skins in specific areas have been developed. In this study, we collected and examined a total of 1,260 shed skin samples - including 322 samples from neonates/ juveniles and 938 from subadults/adults - from 53 snake species in Taiwan and adjacent islands, and developed the first guide to identify them. To the naked eye or from scanned images, the sheds of almost all species could be identified if most of the shed was collected. The key features that aided in identification included the patterns on the sheds and scale morphology. -

As you view the photos within, keep in mind that there are albino (no melanin) and melanistic (abundance of melanin) snakes that will not exhibit the same colors as most snakes of the species. Albino snakes can be pure white, or mostly white with a different colored pattern. Melanistic snakes are very dark, even solid black. So, you might see a white snake with a yellow pattern that looks exactly like the deadly Russell’s viper (Daboia russellii siamensis) - but the color is way off because it’s albino. E-mail:[email protected] Abstract Islands are viewed as natural evolutionary laboratories for terrestrial organisms because they have boundaries that limit dispersal and often reveal evolutionary patterns and mechanisms. One such pattern is that the smallest and largest species of different types of tetrapod animals are frequently found on islands. Here I describe two new diminutive species of snakes of the genus Leptotyphlops from the Lesser Antilles: one from Saint Lucia and the other from Barbados. The one from Barbados is the smallest species of snake and has a total adult length of approximately 100 mm. Limited evidence indicates a clutch size of one and a greatly elongated egg shape (length /width). Comparison of egg shapes in snakes indi- cates that the shape is a packaging phenomenon, related primarily to the shape of the available body cavity and clutch size. For a clutch size of one, expected egg shape is eight whereas expected egg shape drops to two at a clutch size of ten. The body shape of snakes, defined as snout-to-vent length divided by width, also varies and influences the shape of snake eggs. The smallest snakes are typically stout-bodied with shapes of 30–35 whereas the longest snakes usually are more elongate, with shapes of 45–50. -

Addition of Liopeltis Stoliczkae (Sclater, 1891) (Squamata: Colubridae) to the Herpetofauna of Thailand, with Notes on Its Distribution and Natural History

SIAM SOC. 63(2): 127–140, 2019 ADDITION OF LIOPELTIS STOLICZKAE (SCLATER, 1891) (SQUAMATA: COLUBRIDAE) TO THE HERPETOFAUNA OF THAILAND, WITH NOTES ON ITS DISTRIBUTION AND NATURAL HISTORY Sjon Hauser1 ABSTRACT The colubrid snake Liopeltis stoliczkae (Sclater, 1891) is reported for the first time from Thailand. Over the years 2004 –2018 more than twenty road-killed and four living specimens of L. stoliczkae were spotted at a dozen of localities in six different provinces of northern Thailand. They were photographed, and relatively intact road-killed specimens were collected and preserved as vouchers. The present and past records of L. stoliczkae in northeastern India, Myanmar and Indochina are discussed for the long absence of records of the species in northern Thailand in spite of an apparently higher abundance there than in other parts of its range. Keywords: Colubridae, Liopeltis stoliczkae, Liopeltis tricolor, northern Thailand, biogeography INTRODUCTION The colubrid snake genus Liopeltis Fitzinger, 1843 is currently believed to consist of six valid species distributed in South Asia, southern China, and mainland and insular Southeast Asia as far eastwards as the Philippine Archipelago (WALLACH ET AL., 2014). These species have heads that are moderately distinct from the necks, and small cylindrical, slender and elongate bodies and tails, and their total body length rarely exceeds 70 cm. The dorsal scales are smooth and in 15 rows at midbody (BOULENGER, 1894; LEVITON, 1964). Due to their small size, brown color and their secretive habits, little is known about these snakes. Two species of the genus are known to occur in Thailand, Liopeltis tricolor (Schlegel, 1837) and L.
