Report Code: 001_GBP_IIT_GEN_DAT_01_Ver 1_Dec 2010 River Ganga at a Glance: Identification of Issues and Priority Actions for Restoration Report Code: 001_GBP_IIT_GEN_DAT_01_Ver 1_Dec 2010 Preface In exercise of the powers conferred by sub‐sections (1) and (3) of Section 3 of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 (29 of 1986), the Central Government has constituted National Ganga River Basin Authority (NGRBA) as a planning, financing, monitoring and coordinating authority for strengthening the collective efforts of the Central and State Government for effective abatement of pollution and conservation of the river Ganga. One of the important functions of the NGRBA is to prepare and implement a Ganga River Basin: Environment Management Plan (GRB EMP). A Consortium of 7 Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) has been given the responsibility of preparing Ganga River Basin: Environment Management Plan (GRB EMP) by the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF), GOI, New Delhi. Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) has been signed between 7 IITs (Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee) and MoEF for this purpose on July 6, 2010. This report is one of the many reports prepared by IITs to describe the strategy, information, methodology, analysis and suggestions and recommendations in developing Ganga River Basin: Environment Management Plan (GRB EMP). The overall Frame Work for documentation of GRB EMP and Indexing of Reports is presented on the inside cover page. There are two aspects to the development of GRB EMP. Dedicated people spent hours discussing concerns, issues and potential solutions to problems. This dedication leads to the preparation of reports that hope to articulate the outcome of the dialog in a way that is useful. -

South Asia Network on Dams, Rivers and People Uttarakhand: Existing, under construction and proposed Hydropower Projects: How do they add to the disaster potential in Uttarakhand? As Uttarakhand faced unprecedented flood disaster and as the issue of contribution of hydropower projects in this disaster was debated, one question for which there was no clear answer is, how many hydropower projects are there in various river basins of Uttarakhand? How many of them are operating hydropower projects, how many are under construction and how many more are planned? How projects are large (over 25 MW installed capacity), small (1-25 MW) and mini-mirco (less than 1 MW installed capacity) in various basins at various stages. This document tries to give a picture of the status of various hydropower projects in various sub basins in Uttarakhand, giving a break up of projects at various stages. River Basins in Uttarakhand Entire Uttarakhand is Uttarakhand has 98 operating hydropower part of larger Ganga basin. Mitt. a species of the Marchantialian taxon Cyathodium Kunze from a new locality, Chaukori in the Pithoragarh district (Kumaon Region) of Uttarakhand. Morphological studies have revealed interesting strategies adopted by the populations for successful establishment in the new habitat. Key words: Liverwort;Morpho-anatomy;Cyathodium. Introduction The worldwide distributed Marchantialian member CyathodiumKunze shows 13 valid species (Söderström et al., 2016) out of which 9species are known from the Indian sub-continent (Singh, 2016). The taxon is abundantly represented both in the plains and hills though a majority of them are reportedly endemic. The present article embodies morpho-anatomical variations observed in a species of the taxon Cyathodium aureonitens (Griff.) Mitt.,recorded from a new locality, Chaukori in the hills of Pithoragarh district in Uttarakhand. The species occursin the rainy season,endures moderate winters and diesout on the onset of the summers. Earlier populations of the species had been reported by Srivastava and Dixit (1996) from Mussoorie and Asthana et al., (2008) from Chakrata. -

Sustainable management of the nearly 3 million springs in the region requires a framework to identify the springs most vulnerable to change agents which can be biophysical or socio-economic, internal or external. In this study, we conceptualize vulnerability in the Indian Himalayan springs. By way of a systematic review of the published literature and synthesis of research findings, a scheme of identifying and quantifying these change agents (stressors) is presented. The stressors are then causally linked to the characteristics of the springs using indicators, and the resulting impact and responses are discussed. These components, viz., stressors, state, impact, and response, and the linkages are used in the conceptual framework to assess the vulnerability of springs. Multi-Dimensional Gendered Inequalities in Everyday Life
UPHILL TASKS WITHIN KUMAON HIMALAYAN COMMUNITIES: Multi-dimensional Gendered Inequalities in Everyday Life SIDDHARTH SAREEN AND CELIE MANUEL This paper contributes an ethnographically informed understanding of multi-dimensional inequalities in rural mountainous communities through a gender lens that focuses on the roles women perform as biologically, culturally, economically and geographically marginalised actors. It is based on a four-month study in a rain-fed agricultural SPECIAL ISSUE region of the Kumaon Himalayas, and spans two districts of the Indian state of Uttarakhand with different farming profiles. The study employs qualitative methods to examine the impact of globalisation on women within changing rural contexts, identifying several crosscutting gender-related issues. Data analysis follows a grounded theory approach and reveals sets of intersecting inequalities which disadvantage these women, who are in vulnerable circumstances, through processes of globalisation that work in an exclusionary manner. By explaining these inequalities in a situated manner while emphasising their multi-dimensional nature, we present a nuanced account of women’s roles in these changing rural societies, and thus foreground the material conditions of gender difference in everyday life.
