Shapiro Feb. 7, 2018 4:12 p.m. ET The fancy color diamond market is on the upswing, according to a report, with blue diamonds seeing the largest gains. Blue diamonds saw a 5.9% increase in value in the fourth quarter of 2017 in a year-over-year comparison, according to data published on Feb. 1 by the Fancy Color Research Foundation (FCRF). Pink and yellow diamond prices decreased slightly in the same period, at 0.8% and 1.8%, respectively. The market overall was up 0.1%. A fancy vivid blue diamond ring (est. $14-18 million) goes on view at Sotheby's on Oct. 13, 2017 in London. ILLUSTRATION: GETTY IMAGES FOR SOTHEBY'S In November 2017, Christie’s sold a 8.67-carat fancy intense blue diamond ring in Geneva, Switzerland for $13.2 million. The reason for this disparity has less to do with demand, than it does with the rarity of the stone, says FCRF Chairman Eden Rachminov. Demand for yellow and pink diamonds is actually higher, but the amount of blue diamonds being mined is decreasing. “Almost nothing is coming out of the ground,” he says. Pink diamonds have seen the highest gains in the last 13 years with an overall appreciation of 361.9%, according to FCRF’s index, which is compiled through survey data provided by manufacturers and brokers.

Fancy Colored Diamonds to Sparkle in 2016 www.barrons.com /articles/fancy-colored-diamonds-to-sparkle-in-2016-1449793858 Hong Kong billionaire Joseph Lau paid a combined $77 million for two fancy colored diamonds at auctions in Geneva last month -- $48.4 million for a 12.03-carat vivid blue at Sotheby’s and $28.5 million for a 16.08 carat vivid pink at Christie’s, extraordinary prices for extraordinary stones. But Lau, who reportedly also happens to be wanted in Macau where was he was convicted in 2014 of bribery and money laundering, is not alone in pursuing fancy colored diamonds. Pink and blue and even yellow diamonds are among the hottest jewelry items this year and that’s not expected to change in 2016. “Fancy colored diamonds are probably more important today than ever before,” Graeme Thompson, Director of Jewellery, Asia, at Bonham’s said at a recent Hong Kong press event detailing results from the Knight Frank Luxury Index. The term “fancy” speaks to the depth of color in a stone with a “fancy vivid” having the richest hue. The luxury index, which tracks colored diamonds as well as jewelry among ten asset classes, including classic cars and fine wine, rose 10% in the 12 months through September and 63% in the last five years. Prices of colored diamonds, despite eye-popping auction prices, haven’t risen in the past year, a casualty of the Chinese economic slowdown and the government’s anti-corruption crackdown. Still, the category rose 142% in the past ten years. Most of that growth is from pink diamonds, up a soaring 315% in ten years, and blue diamonds, surging 154% in that time, the Fancy Color Research Foundation reports.

Autumn 2019 Autumn IN-HOUSE PUBLICATION OF THE LARGEST DIAMOND MINING COMPANY AUTUMN 2019 ALROSA ALROSA ALROSA MAINTAINS LEADERSHIP IN SOCIAL INVESTMENTS NEW RESEARCH Head of ALROSA sales division OF PRICEWATERHOUSECOOPERS Evgeny Agureev " We correct the terms of each trade session based on market conditions" TRUE COLORS SPECIAL COLLECTION OF FANCY COLORED DIAMONDS BY ALROSA IN HONG KONG The Spirit of The Rose UNIQUE RUSSIAN PINK DIAMOND TO BE AUCTIONED EDITORIAL NOTE Pink is perhaps the most “positively charged” color. Depending on the hue, saturation and context, it can cause various and sometimes polar associations, but emotionally it is always attractive and vivid. In the world of natural stones, the position of pink is invariably high due to its extreme rarity. That is why the appearance of large diamonds of this color at an auction traditionally causes a big stir. In Russia, ALROSA has cut and is going to auction a unique 14.83-carat purple-pink diamond. There was nothing like it in Russia or elsewhere in the world: the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) says that it is the largest flawless or internally flawless diamond in its color ever certified by the GIA. Its color is defined as Fancy Vivid Purple- Pink. Another feature of the diamond that makes it exceptional is the absence of inclusions. You can read here where and how this “perfect pink” was mined and cut. Every crisis in the diamond industry has its own specific nature, and this one is not an exception to the rule. Member of the Executive Committee, Head of ALROSA’s sales division Evgeny Agureev tells us about the clients’ support in the times of crisis, talks about the crisis factors and upside potential.
