It is just a year since our parishes came together as the Southern Cluster of Stratton Deanery. This was a change for all of us and I am delighted at how quickly we found we were able to work together and to support each other. The time has now come for us to move towards making this situation permanent so that we become a Benefice of Parishes instead of a „cluster‟. As part of this process we will need to agree a new name – so if anyone has any helpful suggestions as to what it might be please let me know.

During the last 18 months or so we as a Deanery have been working together on the Accompanied Ministry Development Programme, exploring ways to „Make Christ Known and to Grow the Church‟. On 8 February Bishop Philip, together with more than 75 people from across the Deanery, came to Otterham and Hall to hear all about our progress to date, and to hear our plans for the future. At the end of the presentations the Bishop presided at a Eucharist before we sat down to a delicious lunch.

We continue, of course, to work together as a Deanery, and as a Cluster of parishes, finding new ways to take the message of God‟s love into our communities, and learning from each other.

Of course we are now into the season of Lent, traditionally a time of thoughtful penitence as we prepare for the events of Holy Week and the glory of Easter Day. It is traditional in Lent to give up some type of foodstuff – perhaps chocolate, or meat or biscuits. During Lent I once again urge you to consider making a donation to Foodbank – those of us who have the luxury of choosing to do without some type of food should, as part of our Lenten discipline, consider those for Contd.....
