  • Michael Jackson's Gesamtkunstwerk
Liminalities: A Journal of Performance Studies Vol. 11, No. 5 (November 2015) Michael Jackson’s Gesamtkunstwerk: Artistic Interrelation, Immersion, and Interactivity From the Studio to the Stadium Sylvia J. Martin Michael Jackson produced art in its most total sense. Throughout his forty-year career Jackson merged art forms, melded genres and styles, and promoted an ethos of unity in his work. Jackson’s mastery of combined song and dance is generally acknowledged as the hallmark of his performance. Scholars have not- ed Jackson’s place in the lengthy soul tradition of enmeshed movement and mu- sic (Mercer 39; Neal 2012) with musicologist Jacqueline Warwick describing Jackson as “embodied musicality” (Warwick 249). Jackson’s colleagues have also attested that even when off-stage and off-camera, singing and dancing were frequently inseparable for Jackson. James Ingram, co-songwriter of the Thriller album hit “PYT,” was astonished when he observed Jackson burst into dance moves while recording that song, since in Ingram’s studio experience singers typically conserve their breath for recording (Smiley). Similarly, Bruce Swedien, Jackson’s longtime studio recording engineer, told National Public Radio, “Re- cording [with Jackson] was never a static event. We used to record with the lights out in the studio, and I had him on my drum platform. Michael would dance on that as he did the vocals” (Swedien ix-x). Surveying his life-long body of work, Jackson’s creative capacities, in fact, encompassed acting, directing, producing, staging, and design as well as lyri- cism, music composition, dance, and choreography—and many of these across genres (Brackett 2012).

  • The Jackson 5
The Jackson 5 Group 1: Elizabeth Nessim, Lydia Sour, Lauren Johnson, Jimmy Schmidt, Madie Domm, Megan Koenig Statement of Interest We selected the Jackson 5 as our topic for this presentation because they were, and continue to be, a significant leader in the evolution of rock music through the decades. Out of this group, the world renowned Michael Jackson emerged as a legend of pop music. Furthermore, the group's vast influences on artists, and culture, paved the way for the exploration of new musical styles through the later half of the twentieth century. We wanted to explore the roots of significant artists to better understand how they influenced the music of today. Overview of the Group (5) • American popular music group • Formed in 1963 under the name: The Jackson Brothers • They entered the professional music scene four years later in 1967 • They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997, but their music covered numerous other genres including: - R&B - Soul - Disco - Funk - Dance-Pop - Pop Rock Motown (2) • Small record label (originally called Tammie Records, later changed to Tamla Records) started by Berry Gordy Jr., an African American -Preference for sophisticated jazz music, not as much for Rhythm and Blues -Based out of Detroit (because of the large black population) • “Shop Around” by the Miracles in 1960 became a #2 hit against all odds • Motown then became the “Cinderella Story” of the recording industry • Within 7 year, Motown had become an empire The Motown Style The Motown style included: • A professional orchestration and vocals (lead singer with vocal backup) • Catchy rhythms and lyrics that appealed to a wide audience • There is a strong beat with a heavy backbeat reinforced by clapping • Jazz, Rhythm and Blues, and Pop influences • No improvisation, very controlled Early Years and Formation (6) From their young year, Tito, Jermaine and Jackie showed an interest in the guitar and singing, so their father formed their group naming them the Jackson Brothers, with Marlon and Michael playing the tambourine and congas.

5 1 0 2 - 14 20 REPORT ANNUAL All Saints Catholic School 3418 Noble Avenue • Richmond, VA 23222 804 329-7524 • www.allsaintsric.org June 30, 2015 Dear Fans of All Saints, This was a year of positive transformation for which we are so grateful. Student retention from the year before was 93%, while we were able to welcome 63 new families in 2014-15, taking our enrollment to 167—a 30% increase over the year before. We are very grateful to All Saints families for entrusting their children with us. Fundraising also increased. For example, through the Virginia Education Improve- ment Scholarships Tax Credits program, donors provided scholarships for 48 qualifying students for the 2014-15 school year, up from 18 student scholarships the year before. Additional funds were also raised for future tuition needs. We are also very grateful to several individuals who stepped up to meet specific needs at the school, a few of which are chronicling in this report. The increased funding helps us retain our commitment to our mission—to provide a quality Catholic education to all who strive to acquire it. Specifically, it allows us to sup- port the largest number of Segura students in the Diocese; the Segura Initiative aims to provide Catholic education to Hispanic children in need. Also, it allows us to make major investments in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) integration to ensure our students are prepared for the future. In the pages of this report you will find many exciting things that happened last school year organized under the headings of Technology, Learning, Faith and Family.

Was Michael Jackson A Pedophile? By Michael Bailey | July 1st 2009 12:11 PM | 210 comments | Print | E-mail | Track Comments J. Michael Bailey MORE ARTICLES • Michael Jackson: Erotic Identity Disorder? • Was Michael Jackson A Pedophile? • Transsexual Smokescreen: Ignoring Science In “The Man Who Would Be Queen” All Articles ABOUT MICHAEL I am Professor of Psychology at Northwestern University. I study sexual orientation and related traits such as sex atypicality and gender identity... View Michael's Profile Michael Bailey Search This Blog The predictably massive postmortem analysis of Michael Jackson has focused on both his enormous talent and his spectacular strangeness. Although there is lively debate whether Jackson or Elvis Presley is the all time King of Pop, there is no question which of them is the King of Weird. Elvis Presley had his quirks—secret meetings with Nixon, shooting at television sets, and of course, drug abuse. But these did not compare with Michael Jackson's bizarre physical appearance, abetted by untold plastic surgeries; child-like speech; enjoyment in sleeping with (and perhaps "sleeping with") boys; obsession with Peter Pan; and of course, drug abuse. Jackson's weirdness, unlike Presley's, was publicized for years before his death. So it is disappointing to read the banal psychological interpretations of his behavior. The most common thread is that Jackson's cruel and ambitious father robbed Michael of his childhood. Slate's Jacob Weisberg wrote, back in 2005: "Almost everything that seems freakish about him can be explained by his poignant, doomed effort to get his stolen childhood back." Really? How many musicians, athletes, and actors have had overbearing parents who made their childhoods miserable? How many of these resemble Jackson in any way whatsoever: the freakish surgically altered face, the affected voice, Neverland, llamas and chimps, and sleeping with pubescent boys? A unique person like Michael Jackson requires a unique explanation.
