Bankfull Discharge Recurrence Interval in Gravel-Bed Rivers

The catchment sizes vary from 4km2 to nearly 2700km2. Bankfull discharge value increases with basin size. In the case of gravel-bed 1´044 rivers developed on an impermeable substratum, the following equation emerges: Qb=0´087 A . Bankfull discharge recurrence interval was determined by ®tting maximum annual ¯oods (Ta) into Gumbel's distribution and then using the partial duration series (Tp) in this same distribution. Recurrence interval is below 0´7 years (Tp) for small pebble-bed rivers developed on an impermeable substratum; it reaches 1´1 to 1´5 years when the catchment size of these rivers exceeds 250km2. Rivers incised in the soft schists of the Famenne show larger channel capacity at bankfull stage, a small width/ depth ratio and thus higher recurrence intervals (1´4±5´3 years with Ta and 1±4´4 years with Tp). Base¯ow-dominated gravel-bed streams and sandy or silty rivers experience less frequent bankfull discharges, with a recurrence interval higher than 2 or even 3 years (Tp). 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Hermans1 1Laboratory for Applied Geology and Hydrogeology, Geology Department, Ghent University, Ghent, Belgium 2Urban and Environmental Engineering, University ABSTRACT Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) and saltwater intrusion (SI) seem two opposite components of the complex interaction between freshwater aquifers and the sea, but are in fact complementary processes (Taniguchi et al., 2002). SGD is of major ecological importance since it can create an important nutrient flux towards the coastal waters, but it might also be the entry gate for contaminants (e.g. Burnett et al., 2006). SI leads to the inflow of salt or brackish water into the onshore freshwater aquifers, causing a risk for the quality of exploited drinking water. The approximately 67 km long Belgian coastline along the North Sea has a complex geometry. A fragmented dune belt 100 m up to 2 km wide separates the sandy beach slope from the polder area. Rainwater infiltrates in the dune and polder areas and partly flows towards the sea as SGD. At the same time, the tides are locally responsible for the unusual presence of a salt water lens under the beach (Vandenbohede & Lebbe, 2006). In addition both SGD and SI are influenced by geological heterogeneity, making their characterization difficult. Two sites are investigated: the Westhoek area (near the Belgian-French border - characterized by a large, broad dune belt) and the area between Wenduine and Blankenberge (West of the Zeebrugge harbour - where the dune belt is relatively narrow). In order to detect zones where SGD occurs, the distribution of the fresh-/saltwater interface is mapped. -

This study aims to characterize Belgian clays in order to evaluate their use for manufacture of compressed earth blocks (CEB). Nineteen Belgian clay deposits were sampled in 56 sites and 135 samples were collected and analyzed. The analyses focus on the determination of particle size, plasticity, nature and mineralogy as the main characteristics for assessing the suitability of the raw clays to make CEB. These analyses allow for classifying the sampled clay deposits in three categories: clays that can be used unchanged to make CEB (2 clay deposits), clays that are suitable for the manufacture of CEB but require addition of sand and gravel particles (13 clay deposits) and clays that are suitable for the manufacture of CEB if they are mixed with other raw clays (4 clay deposits). In order to verify the use of these clays, five of them served as a model for making CEB. The strength of these bricks was evaluated by testing for compressive strength and abrasion resistance. The results of these tests confirm the suitability or not of the sampled clays for the manufacture of CEB. -

Houthuys3 Abstract The morphological evolution of foreshore, backshore, and adjoining dunes of the entire Belgian coast is surveyed by means of aerial remote sensing on a yearly basis since 1983. The evolution over this 10-year period is comprehensively illustrated by the land- and seaward shifts of the low-water line, high-water line and dune foot. It appears that nearly all major displacements are linked to human interactions, such as beach nourishments, groyne construction, etc. If these are left out of consideration, the main trend of the coastline evolution would be a landward retreat. Since 1986, the results of the bathymetric B E AS AC® measurements of the nearshore are linked to the aerial remote sensing surveys. The combination of these two observation techniques has proved very effective for the monitoring and understanding of coastal morphodynamic processes. Introduction The Belgian coast is situated along the smooth, sandy southeastern shores of the southern bight of the North Sea. The morphological behaviour of this type of coast is the result of a dynamic equilibrium, determined by winds, waves, and tides. Changes in the boundary conditions, either natural or man-induced, will cause a response in this behaviour. Adequate monitoring is therefore very important for a rational management of the coast. It has been running since 1992 and has co-financed more than 4 500 projects across the EU and in third countries, mobilising over €9 billion and contributing more than €4 billion to the protection of the environment and climate. The budget for the LIFE programme for 2014–2020 is set at €3.4 billion in current prices, with a sub-programme for environment and a sub-programme for climate action. Desmond KIME Summary (BIERNAUX, 1972) and the first Belgian millipede atlas concerning these two groups (BIERNAUX, 1971). Between The work done in the past on Belgian millipedes is briefly reviewed 1977 and 1980 MARQUET made a huge collection of soil and previous publications on the subject are cited. A check-list of Belgian Diplopoda is given. Biogeographical districts of Belgium are invertebrates taken from all regions of the country for the indicated and the distribution of millipedes within these is noted. Each Belgian Royal Institute ofNatural Science, the millipedes spedes is reviewed; its distribution in Belgium is related to its of which I identified and catalogued at the request of European geographical range and to knowledge of its ecology. Maps of distribution within Belgium are presented. There is discussion of the Dr Leon BAERT. My own collecting in Belgium began in origins, evolution and community composition of the Belgian milli 1974 and has continued to the present day. Detailed pede fauna. ecological studies were carried out from 1977 onwards, based in the laboratory of Professor Key words: Diplopoda, Belgium, check-list, biogeography, ecology, Philippe LEBRUN at faunal origins. Louvain-la-Neuve, some of these with colleagues at Gembloux, and at the Belgian Royal Institute of Natural Science. These studies gave rise to a number of publica tions adding to the knowledge of the Belgian fauna (KIME Introduction & WAUTHY, 1984; BRANQUART, 1991; KIME, 1992; KIME et al., 1992; BRANQUART et al., 1995, KIME, 1997). -
