While the Above Information Provides a General Description of the Yser
While the above information provides a general description of the Yser Medal, it does not convey a sense of the excitement and importance surround- ing the event it commemorates. The Yser Battle was not just another battle; it was a battle of significance for the history of Belgium and the First World War, and cannot be overestimated. In this fight, the battered remnants of the Belgian Field Army, under Albert, King of the Belgians, turned on their Germanic tormentors and made a heroic defensive stand, redeeming Belgian honor, protecting a s~mall corner of Belgium, and assuring an ulti- mately victorious Belgium as a functioning ally of France and England. Following the battle, or more properly, the "maneuver" of the Marne in September 191~, the Allied and German armies probed for the open flank of each other in a series of running battles known to history as the "Race to the Sea", September-November, 191~. The failure of either side to gain the desired flanking position, ultimately doomed all to the attrition of potential trench warfare uutil the spring of 1918. The First Battle of Ypres, of which the Yser Battle was a part, represented the last attempt by the Germans to turn the Allied flank and secure the quick and decisive victory demanded by their original War Plans. They hurled 15 fresh regular and reserve infantry divisions into the battle. It was inadequate; the Allied line held. The Battle of Yser took place on the extreme left of the Allied Front. The Belgians held the lines from the North Sea Coast just north of Nie~port, along the banks of the Yser river, to D~_~nude, Belgium, a towa which was held by the French. -

25th Salt Water Intrusion Meeting, 17- M. Paepen1, H. Michael2, K. Walraevens1 and T. Hermans1 1Laboratory for Applied Geology and Hydrogeology, Geology Department, Ghent University, Ghent, Belgium 2Urban and Environmental Engineering, University ABSTRACT Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) and saltwater intrusion (SI) seem two opposite components of the complex interaction between freshwater aquifers and the sea, but are in fact complementary processes (Taniguchi et al., 2002). SGD is of major ecological importance since it can create an important nutrient flux towards the coastal waters, but it might also be the entry gate for contaminants (e.g. Burnett et al., 2006). SI leads to the inflow of salt or brackish water into the onshore freshwater aquifers, causing a risk for the quality of exploited drinking water. The approximately 67 km long Belgian coastline along the North Sea has a complex geometry. A fragmented dune belt 100 m up to 2 km wide separates the sandy beach slope from the polder area. Rainwater infiltrates in the dune and polder areas and partly flows towards the sea as SGD. At the same time, the tides are locally responsible for the unusual presence of a salt water lens under the beach (Vandenbohede & Lebbe, 2006). In addition both SGD and SI are influenced by geological heterogeneity, making their characterization difficult. Two sites are investigated: the Westhoek area (near the Belgian-French border - characterized by a large, broad dune belt) and the area between Wenduine and Blankenberge (West of the Zeebrugge harbour - where the dune belt is relatively narrow). In order to detect zones where SGD occurs, the distribution of the fresh-/saltwater interface is mapped. -

The divide between urban and non-urban areas seems to be signi- ficantly divisive in this respect. While in recent years efforts to reach out to local communities have multiplied and “periphe- ral” or “inner” areas have got more attention, much remains unknown about local communities’ perceptions, understanding and implementation of EU policies at the local level. Additional- ly, it is not clear to what extent local communities far from the main centers of decision making are able to represent themsel- ves and their policy priorities to higher levels of government. -

Nieuwpoort, Belgium [email protected]
A Kingdom Saved by the Sea Guido Demerre Nieuwpoort, Belgium [email protected] The Belgian Army had been fighting a defensive war since the German invasion of Belgium on 4 August 1914. In quick succession the fortified position of Liège fell, and the Belgians withdrew to the outer fortifications of Antwerp. As commander in chief of the armed forces, Belgium’s King Albert intended to maintain his nation’s independence during this essentially Franco-Prussian conflict. Bound by a pledge of neutrality, he aimed to expell the Germans without favouring the French; he knew to fear post-war French dominance as much as German victory. Although Article VII of the Treaty of London (1839) promised European aid to protect Belgian neutrality, the king did not know when help would arrive, as the Anglo-French forces had troubles of their own in northern France. To show his support, the king launched 2 sorties from Antwerp,1 which succeeded in diverting 60,000 German soldiers destined for France. Despite the valiant efforts of little Belgium, foreign military assistance was not forthcoming. First Lord of the Admiralty Winston S. Churchill suggested that the Dutch hold the River Scheldt open to allow supplies to reach Antwerp, but the Dutch insisted on maintaining their neutrality. The British, with much more at stake in the defence of Antwerp, began sending guns and ammunition. Unfortunately, German artillery bombardments began in late September. Just as at Liège and Namur, Antwerp’s defences were no match for German guns. The Belgian clearance of the suburbs looked even worse than the aftermath of the San Francisco earthquake.
